Disentangling the effects of voice: The incremental roles of opportunity, behavior, and instrumentality in predicting procedural fairness.

Many voice studies have failed to distinguish among voice opportunity, perceived voice opportunity, voice behavior, and voice instrumentality. Thus, the authors sought to clarify the roles of each in determining procedural fairness perceptions. Controlling for the effect of voice opportunity, each of the 3 remaining constructs was hypothesized to predict fairness. Furthermore, voice instrumentality was hypothesized to moderate the effect of voice behavior on fairness. Undergraduates (N=102; 81 for some analyses) participated in an orientation-week design simulation in which voice opportunity was manipulated. The results indicated significant incremental effects of perceived voice opportunity and the predicted Voice Instrumentality × Voice Behavior interaction. Fairness was lowest for individuals who were denied voice opportunity, perceived less voice opportunity, and provided high levels of noninstrumental voice behavior. A real-time flood-routed voice protocol for fibre optic local area networks

A simple real-time flood routing voice (RTFRV) protocol which is suitable for point-to-point arbitrarily connected fibre optic local area networks is described. Simulation on a 3 Mbit/s nine-node mesh network which employs the protocol has shown that it is capable of supporting about 50 simultaneous two-way voice conversations (or 100 users) with packet delay of less than 10 ms and without any loss of information. The overall results suggest that voice transmission on such a network is feasible and that it performs better than voice transmission over Ethernet. Furthermore, the network is also very robust and allows easy network reconfiguration.     

Human-factors aspects of designing computer voice output systems as communication aids for the disabled

Possible ways of meeting the user's needs when designing communication aids with synthetic voice output are discussed. The points raised evolved from a case study of the development of microcomputer based systems which the blind people can use to read page-oriented text. The ideas discussed in this paper may also enhance the performance of blind computer programmers. Essential facilities in communication aids for the non-vocal are also inferred.

The effect of voice onset time differences on lexical access in dutch.

Effects on spoken-word recognition of prevoicing differences in Dutch initial voiced plosives were examined. In 2 cross-modal identity-priming experiments, participants heard prime words and nonwords beginning with voiced plosives with 12, 6, or 0 periods of prevoicing or matched items beginning with voiceless plosives and made lexical decisions to visual tokens of those items. Six-period primes had the same effect as 12-period primes. Zero-period primes had a different effect, but only when their voiceless counterparts were real words. Listeners could nevertheless discriminate the 6-period primes from the 12- and 0-period primes. Phonetic detail appears to influence lexical access only to the extent that it is useful: In Dutch, presence versus absence of prevoicing is more informative than amount of prevoicing.
