Universal Rendering Sequences for Transparent Vertex Caching of Progressive Meshes

We present methods to generate rendering sequences for triangle meshes which preserve mesh locality as much as possible. This is useful for maximizing vertex reuse when rendering the mesh using a FIFO vertex buffer, such as those available in modern 3D graphics hardware. The sequences are universal in the sense that they perform well for all sizes of vertex buffers, and generalize to progressive meshes. This has been verified experimentally.

Hydrodynamic drag forces on two porous spheres moving along their centerline

This paper numerically evaluates the hydrodynamic drag force exerted on two highly porous spheres moving steadily along their centerline (sphere #1 and sphere #2) through a quiescent Newtonian fluid over a Reynolds number ranging from 0.1 to 40. At creeping flow limit, the drag forces exerted on both spheres were identical. At higher Reynolds numbers the drag force on sphere #1 was higher than sphere #2, revealing the shading effects produced by sphere #1 on sphere #2. At dimensionless diameter (β, =d_f/2k^0.5, d_f and k are floc diameter and interior permeability, respectively) >20, the spheres can be regarded nonporous. At β<20, the drag forces dropped. At β<2, the drag forces approached “no-spheres” limit. An increased size ratio of two spheres (d_f1/d_f2) would increase the drag force on sphere #1 and reduce that on sphere #2. At increasing β for both spheres, the drag force on sphere #2 was increased because of the more difficult advective flow through its interior, and at the same time the drag was reduced owing to the stronger wake flow produced by the denser sphere #1. The competition between these two effects leads to complicated dependence of drag force on sphere #2 on β value. These effects were minimal when β became low. Two identical spheres could move steadily along their centerline. At higher Reynolds number, the two spheres would move closer because of the incorporation of inertia force. For spheres of different diameters, the sphere # 2 would move faster than sphere #1 regardless of their size ratio and β value. This occurrence yielded efficient coagulation when two porous spheres were moving in-line.

退火条件对FeCuNbSiB非晶带材应力阻抗效应的影响

研究了退火条件对非晶FeCuNbSiB带材应力阻抗性能的影响。结果表明,当退火温度为300℃时,FeCuNbSiB非晶带材开始慢慢晶化,当温度上升到500℃时,带材内部结构已由非晶态完全转变成晶态。当退火温度低于300℃时,退火能够消除部分应力,使阻抗变化的灵敏度提高;但当退火温度高于300℃时,随着退火温度的升高,应力阻抗效应减弱。退火时间超过1h,延长退火时间,对带材的应力阻抗性能影响不大。非晶FeCuNbSiB带材经100℃×2h的退火处理后,应力为2.7MPa时,应力阻抗变化可达26%。     

The Holy Alignment: Geodesic and Astronomical Fundamentals for Calculating the Adjustment of Medieval Naves

It is commonly believed that the longitudinal axes of churches extend exactly in an east-west direction. However, thorough investigations have shown that this is not always correct; rather, both southern and northern deviations of up to about 25° can occur. The angular deviation between the church axis and true east is called the Holy Alignment. This present study presents the possibility that the nave is oriented towards the direction of the sun-rising point on the name day of the patron saint of the church. If several saints share the patronage, the Holy Alignment equals the algebraic sum of the angular distances for each saint. The orientation of a nave can be analyzed by means of common mathematical relations used in geodesy, astronomy and gnomonics. In order to perform such an analysis, it is necessary to know the history of the patronage of the church; the Gauss-Krüger coordinates of the ground plan; and characteristic astronomical quantities at the time the church was built. A calculated example with the saints Andrew, James and Philip for the year 980 illustrates the analysis. An appendix deals with the influence of atmospheric refraction on the apparent altitude of the sun near the horizon.     

Triangle Strip Compression

In this paper we introduce a simple and efficient scheme for encoding the connectivity and the stripification of a triangle mesh. Since generating a good set of triangle strips is a hard problem, it is desirable to do this just once and store the computed strips with the triangle mesh. However, no previously reported mesh encoding scheme is designed to include triangle strip information into the compressed representation. Our algorithm encodes the stripification and the connectivity in an interwoven fashion, that exploits the correlation existing between the two.
