A Deformable Template Model, with Special Reference to Elliptical Templates

This paper suggests a high-level continuous image model for planar star-shaped objects. Under this model, a planar object is a stochastic deformation of a star-shaped template. The residual process, describing the difference between the radius-vector function of the template and the object, is allowed to be non-stationary. Stationarity is obtained by a time change. A parametric model for the residual process is suggested and straightforward parameter estimation techniques are developed. The deformable template model makes it possible to detect pathologies as demonstrated by an analysis of a data set of cell nuclei from a benign and a malignant tumour, using stochastic deformations of ellipses.

Study of the precision of an analytical taste panel for sensory evaluation of virgin olive oil. Establishment of criteria for the elimination of abnormal results

The errors of an analytical taste panel used in the sensory evaluation of virgin olive oil have been determined, after eliminating outlying tasters, in order to determine the panel's precision. The confidence limits of the mean have been calculated for defined work schemes. The limits obtained, ±0·4 to ±0·5 employing a scale of 9 points and duplicate determinations, give sufficient precision. A method is proposed for the determination of criteria to allow the routine elimination of outlying results, either from a replicate or from the mean of each taster.

A simulation-based embedded probe technique for human-computer interaction evaluation

There is growing interest in developing video-based methods to evaluate the usefulness and usability of computerised tools in healthcare. In this paper, we propose a human-computer interaction evaluation method that protects the confidentiality of patient information and reduces litigation risks for participants by embedding and analysing performance on probes in complex scenarios with high face validity in a simulated setting. We describe the application of the method to a series of three studies of bar code medication administration (BCMA) software, used to reduce medication errors in the Veterans Administration.
