Generation of uniform drops via through-hole arrays micromachined in stainless-steel plates

This study investigated the generation of oil drops using new symmetric and asymmetric through-hole-array devices made of stainless steel. The through-hole-array devices were built by piling up six stainless-steel plates, each having circular micro-holes with a diameter of 300 or 500 μm or micro-slots with a shorter line of 300 or 500 μm. Drops were generated by injecting a dispersed phase (refined soybean oil) via the through-hole array into a compartment filled with a continuous phase (Milli-Q water solution containing one of two emulsifiers). The drop detachment from symmetric and asymmetric through holes was observed in real time and analyzed. Uniform oil drops with average diameters of 1.0–4.1 mm and coefficients of variation of typically less than 6% were generated using symmetric and asymmetric through-hole-array devices. The resultant drop diameters for asymmetric through-hole arrays were significantly smaller than those for symmetric through-hole arrays. This paper also discusses experimental results regarding the effects of the microstructure, the dimensions of the through holes, and the type of emulsifier on drop generation and the resultant drop diameter.

Determination of threshold stress intensities: fatigue of low alloy steel BS4360-50D

An experimental method for obtaining the effective stress intensities necessary for cyclic crack growth prediction is described. Also, it is shown that the critical threshold value, ΔK_{c, th}, can be estimated using simple energetic considerations, leading to an equation:

The threshold values obtained compare well with the experimentally observed values for a structural steel BS 4360-50D and for other steels.     

NOTE The Application of Surface Analysis Techniques in the Adhesive Bonding of Oily Automotive Steel

There are fewer papers on the adhesive bonding of steel for structural applications than for aluminum and titanium alloys. However, the approach to the adhesive bonding of all three adherends has been similar, that is, the surfaces are pretreated prior to bonding. Trawinski, et al.^1,2,3 reviewed several conversion coatings or etching processes used for steel. Haak and Smith⁴ selected two surface treatments among nineteen based on minimal cost, simplicity and good durability. Smith⁵ has reported work on stainless steel-epoxy bonds under hydrothermal stress. Bischof, et al.⁶ investigated the effect of surface pretreatment of steel on bonding strength obtained with polyvinyl chloride. Ziane, et al.⁷ identified four fracture zones resulting from shear loading of epoxy bonded galvanized steel following four different surface pretreatments. But in some cases, as in the automotive industry, there is a need to bond oily steel directly without surface pretreatment. Rosty, et al.⁸ have reported a study of the role of fillers and cure temperature on the shear strength of oily steel bonded with epoxy. None of the reported research utilizes both microscopic and spectroscopic techniques to analyze the fracture surfaces.
