Comparative Judgments as an Alternative to Ratings: Identifying the Scale Origin.

Although comparative judgment methods have a number of distinct advantages over ratings, they share one common problem: On the basis of comparative judgments, it is not possible to recover the origin of item evaluations. One item may be judged more positively than another, but this result does not allow any conclusions about whether either of the items are attractive or unattractive. This article discusses the implications of this limitation for the interpretation of individual differences in comparative judgments. It also presents 3 different methods that may allow determination of the scale origin using a nested model comparison approach. An application illustrates the proposed approach as well as the benefits of determining the scale origin in understanding value judgments. Runout analysis in fatigue investigation

Those individual tests in a series of experiments that are not completed or must be suspended are known as “censored points,” or “runouts”. Inclusion of runouts in data analysis can be problematic, and such ad hoc approaches as ignoring the runout observation or treating it as a failure can significantly affect estimation. The methodology offered here alleviates the handling of runouts and censored data by using the maximum likelihood estimation (MLE) method to incorporate the censored data properly. The methodology is illustrated with an example problem using actual data and the affects of ad hoc approaches are illustrated.

Prediction of higher heating values for saturated fatty acids from their physical properties

Higher heating values (HHVs) of fatty acids (C₄–C₁₈) were measured and correlated using linear least square regression analysis. Equations were developed for the estimation of the HHVs of saturated fatty acids from their molecular weight (Mw), density (DN) and carbon number (CN). These equations are HHV = 0.0518 Mw + 29.76, HHV = −93.4 DN + 122.67 and HHV = 0.7271 CN + 31.419 with R² values of 0.9895, 0.9798, and 0.9895, respectively. The correlations may be used for HHV estimation of mixtures of fatty acids developed from vegetable oils.     

橡胶Mooney—Rivlin模型材料系数对轴向刚度影响分析

在橡胶小变形范围内，采用理论推断的方法，得到在相同硬度下橡胶Mooney—Rivlin模型材料系数由C2／C1决定的关系式。并采用ABAQUS有限元软件分析的方法，结合橡胶轴向刚度常规解，分析了C2／C1不同值对橡胶轴向刚度的影响进行，结果显示其影响呈现一定规律性。     

奇异值分解压制随机噪声的方法及应用

针对随机噪声压制问题，通过对多项式确定的同相轴形状重新选取数据矩阵，再对新选取的数据矩阵进行SVD滤波，从而压制随机噪声。通过对矩阵奇异值分解的研究，揭示了奇异值分解的原理和SVD滤波原理，将一个多道地震记录看作一个图，它可分解为由一系列正交的子图，通过对子图适当选择并结合其它手段，从而达到提高信噪比的目的，为奇异值分解在地球物理中的进一步应用提供了理论依据。实际数据应用表明，该方法去噪手段灵活、保真性好、分辨率高，对一些突然的脉冲干扰、侧反射、以及其他的反向干扰有明显效果。     

两种含水炸药动压下减敏作用的实验研究

用实验方法对两种含水炸药—水胶炸药和珍珠岩敏化的乳化炸药动压下的减敏作用进行了研究。为了更全面深入地研究这问题,提出了临界压死距离和临界距离两个概念。研究表明,含水炸药的减敏作用与药包间距和延期时差关系很大。水胶炸药的临界压死距离大于乳化炸药,而它们的临界距离相当,这表明两种炸药发生减敏的难易程度相近,但是乳化炸药的抗压死能力比水胶炸药大。采用5段延期电雷管引爆时两种含水炸药的减敏作用比采用2段延期电雷管引爆严重些。

CRITICAL POINTS IN THE SOLIDIFICATION OF A PURE MATERIAL

Patterns in the solidification of a pure material are dealt with in this article. Results, deduced from a simple model based on heat conduction in the two phases and the effect of surface tension on the equilibrium temperature at the moving front, present a guide for experimental work. By introducing far-field conditions imitating what can be achieved in an experiment, we explain how the depths of the phases and the width of the container influence the patterns that can be seen if one advances the control variable to the critical point and then just beyond. Our new result is the existence of a third critical point. It occurs at small wave numbers and it is independent of surface tension. It appears because we take the depths of the phases into account. These depths are input values that offer the possibility of controlling crest-to-trough conduction, stabilizing in the solid, destabilizing in the liquid. The new critical point, and the patterns attending its appearance, can be found in cells of easily attainable widths.
