A critical assessment of the merits of core-spinning by means of comparisons of the strength and extension of core-spun yarns with all-staple-fibre yarns forms the basis of this paper. Core-spinning was done by introducing the filament under tension into the drafted strand as the latter entered the front rollers of the ring-frame. A 20-den (2.2-tex) nylon monofilament was used as core, and three types of staple-fibre covering were investigated. The effects of twist, pre-tension, and feeding arrangements on the geometrical disposition and tensile properties of the yarns were examined. Improvements in strength are, in general, realized at low twists by the incorporation of the filament and by further constraining it to occupy the core. The contribution of the components to the yarn strength and the process of breaking were also subjected to a detailed study. The studies reported provide an interesting insight into the extent of cohesion developed between the fibres during the straining of the yarn and its influence on the process of breaking and ultimately on yarn extension.  相似文献

Abstract

The diffusion of Os in Ni is characterised by measuring interdiffusion coefficients in the binary Ni–Os system, in the temperature range 1200–1350°C. The results are compared with data for Ni–Re. Theoretical calculations indicate that Os should display a diffusion coefficient comparable with Re, among the lowest displayed by elements from the d-block transition elements. The authors' experimental findings confirm these predictions, and suggest that alloying with Os is likely to improve the high temperature properties of the nickel-based superalloys.  相似文献

Abstract

A nickel based superalloy honeycomb sandwich was manufactured by high temperature brazing. The microstructure evolution and the out of plate mechanical properties were investigated for honeycomb sandwiches aged at 1000&degC in the present paper. The maximum tensile stress was 28·5 MPa and the compressive yield strength was 29·6 MPa for the original specimens. These parameters decreased to 22·9 and 20·5 MPa for specimens aged for 2 h, to 18·2 and 12·2 MPa for specimens aged for 5 h and to 20·2 and 14·3 MPa for specimens aged for 10 h respectively. With increasing aging time the tensile elongation decreased, the intermetallic compounds and the eutectic structure in the brazing region disappeared, and the solid solution approaching the matrix gradually increased.  相似文献

Abstract

Weight reduction to improve automobile fuel economy has triggered renewed interest in magnesium. The effects of Ca/Sr separate and composite additions to AZ91D magnesium alloy on its microstructure and mechanical properties have been investigated. The results indicate Ca can refine both the grain and eutectic phase of AZ91D magnesium alloy. Sr hampers microstructure refinement when composite Ca/Sr additions are made. In addition, separate Ca additions to AZ91D magnesium alloy increase yield strength but decrease elongation of this alloy. By adjusting the Ca/Sr composite proportions, additions to AZ91D magnesium alloy are able to improve both microstructure and mechanical properties of the alloy.  相似文献

Abstract

Post-weld heat treatment (PWHT) of 2219-O aluminium alloy friction stir welding joints was carried out at solution temperatures of 480, 500 and 540°C for 32 min followed by aging at 130°C for 9 h. The effects of PWHT on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the joints were investigated. Experimental results show that PWHT causes coarsening of the grains in the weld, and the coarsening degree increases with increasing solution temperature. The tensile strength of the heat treated joints increases with increasing solution temperature. The maximum tensile strength can reach 260% that of the base material at the solution temperature of 540°C. PWHT has a significant effect on the fracture locations of the joints. When the solution temperature is lower than 500°C, the joints fracture in the base material; when the temperature is higher than 500°C, the joints fracture in the weld. The change of the fracture locations of joints is attributed to the presence of precipitate free zones beside the grain boundaries and coarsening equiaxed grain structures in the weld.  相似文献

Abstract

The influence of carbon addition on the aging response of quenched Ti–13Cr (wt-%) has been investigated using hardness tests, tensile tests, optical microscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). It has been found that carbon refines beta grain size, leads to fine and homogenous alpha precipitation and reduces grain boundary alpha. The carbon addition accelerates the rate at which hardening occurs during aging and increases the peak hardness of the aged specimens. A significant improvement in room temperature tensile strength and ductility has also been achieved in the carbon containing alloy after aging at 500°C. The effects of carbon on the aging response appear to be attributed to dislocations introduced by carbides during quenching, elastic strain created in the matrix by carbides and gettering effect of Ti2C carbides. The influence of each of those mechanisms has been demonstrated through experiments and the factors giving rise to the improvements in properties are also discussed in terms of the microstructural observations.  相似文献

Abstract

The present study analyses different boron contents (between 10 and 160 ppm) on the structure of a 0·2C–2Mn–1Si (wt-%) steel deformed at a starting temperature of 1050°C in a T. J. Pigott laboratory rolling mill. The steel was made in a laboratory open induction furnace using high purity raw materials and cast into metallic moulds. This experimental steel has proved to have tribological properties, under dry rolling/sliding contact, as good as those for the 0·8% pearlitic steels used in railway applications. Before thermomechanical processing, the steel ingots (70 × 70 × 70 mm) were homogenised at 1100°C for 1·5 h. The thermomechanical treatment was carried out by a reversed multipass process to reach a level of deformation of 60%. Plastic deformation was finished at ~920°C for all the rolled steels and the plates (70 × 150 × 20 mm) were then water quenched and/or air cooled to room temperature. Results show more bainitic structures as boron content increases in the air cooled steel after hot rolling. For the quenched steels, the structure becomes more martensitic as boron content increases. The best combination of mechanical properties was obtained for the air cooled 76 ppm boron containing steel, which had a lower bainitic structure. This steel had the yield strength of 750 MPa, 15% elongation and the hardness of 40 HRC. Materials characterisation was carried out by optical and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Results are discussed in terms of the boron segregation towards grain boundaries, the effect of boron on the steel hardenability, as well as on the boron carbonitrides (CNB) precipitation.  相似文献

Abstract

AlTiNiMnB x (x=0˙1, 0˙2, 0˙4 and 0˙5) high entropy alloys are prepared by an arc furnace. The results show that the alloys have a single bcc crystal structure. Boron additions lead to distortion of the crystal lattice and alloy strengthening. The highest hardness (779 HV) is achieved with 0˙5 at.-%B.  相似文献
