Hydraulic Study of the Onset of Hypoxia in the Tone River Estuary

Field measurements were conducted to investigate the onset and growth of hypoxia in the Tone River Estuary. Vertical profiles of dissolved oxygen (DO), salinity, and temperature were measured along the deepest line of the estuary. Rates of oxygen consumption by water and sediment in a salt wedge were obtained using laboratory tests. The measurements showed that hypoxia frequently occurred in the front part of the salt wedge and expanded its area toward the river mouth during the summer when the river flow rate was small. The data also suggested that the onset of hypoxia was delayed by the estuarine circulation which supplied oxygen-rich seawater to the salt wedge. To simulate this phenomenon, a two-dimensional flow model in the vertical-longitudinal plane was constructed by transversely integrating the k–ε model equations. The results of model simulation for three months in the summer of 1997 closely matched the field data. The model simulation proved that DO degradation is highly correlated with the residence time of salt water in the estuary.

该文对近期发生的我国宜宾长宁6.0级地震、日本山形6.7级地震、美国加州7.1级地震进行了破坏力分析和对比,包括典型强震记录的峰值和反应谱对比;典型地震动对典型单体结构与区域的破坏力对比;真实地震灾情的对比。主要对比结果包括：对于自振周期较短的砌体结构,宜宾地震破坏力最强;对于自振周期较大的多层框架结构,加州地震破坏力最强加州地震与山形地震的区域震害均轻于宜宾地震。上述结果表明地震震级、地面运动加速度、建筑物震损情况关系复杂,仅通过震级或最大地震动峰值加速度来判断地震破坏力是不合适的,应结合国家台网建设,发展城市抗震弹塑性分析。

How to successfully promote ICT usage: A comparative analysis of Denmark and Japan

The paper presents a comparative analysis of two advanced ICT nations, Japan and Denmark. While Japan is very advanced with respect to its telecommunications infrastructure, Denmark has come further than Japan regarding the use of ICT infrastructures. This paper compares Denmark, a leader in ICT usage, and Japan, which lags in that regard, analyzes differences in institutions, technologies, and services offered, and examines factors contributing to the success of Denmark in promoting ICT usage from a Japanese perspective. Strong governmental leadership, and common techno-infrastructure such as personal ID and digital signature that serve different systems, and user-orientation of service design are the characteristics of Danish efforts absent in Japan.

Winding up the estate of somebody is a sad task, only sustained by the hope of unexpected finds or definitive proof of one's preconceived opinions. There is no difference in this between one's own grandmother and a contemporary like Lucia Moholy. While executing this task I naturally came across various documents that shifted my vague assumptions about this versatile woman in different directions. I saw photographs from her private life that enlightened me about her social relations but, in the end, I was disappointed at not havlng been able to get closer to a person I thought I knew quite well, even if from a certain distance.¹
