Catalysts for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) in a microbial fuel cell (MFC) were prepared by the impregnation on carbon black of FeII acetate (FeAc), Cl–FeIII tetramethoxyphenyl porphyrin (ClFeTMPP), and FeII phthalocyanine (FePc). These materials were subsequently pyrolyzed at a high temperature. The ORR activity of all Fe-based catalysts was measured at pH 7 with a rotating disk electrode (RDE) and their performance for electricity production was then verified in a continuous flow MFC. Catalysts prepared with FeAc and pyrolyzed in NH3 showed poor activity in RDE tests as well as a poor performance in a MFC. The ORR activity and fuel cell performance for catalysts prepared with ClFeTMPP and FePc and pyrolyzed in Ar were significantly higher and comparable for both precursors. The iron loading was optimized for FePc-based catalysts. With a constant catalyst load of 2 mg cm−2 in a MFC, the highest power output (550–590 mW/m2) was observed when the Fe content was 0.5–0.8 wt%, corresponding to only 0.01–016 mg Fe/cm2. A similar power output was observed using a Pt-based carbon cloth cathode containing 0.5 mg Pt/cm2. Long-term stability of the Fe-based cathode (0.5 wt% Fe) was confirmed over 20 days of MFC testing.  相似文献

To explore the feasibility and related mechanism of MFC biosensor for wastewater detection under the action of combined heavy metals. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) and scanning electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were used to explore the related bioelectrochemical process. The response of the reactor to single/combined heavy metals, low/high heavy metal concentrations, and the differences in ohmic resistance (Rs) and charge transfer resistance (Rct) were investigated using Ni as the core heavy metal and the combined action of Cd, Cu and Zn. The results indicated that there was a linear relationship between the concentration and output voltage of the MFC biosensor under the action of combined heavy metals (R2 = 0.8803–0.973). However, the internal resistance (Rint) of the MFC biosensor under the action of single heavy metal was far less than that of the combined heavy metal group, and the power density (19.849 W m?3) was 4 times that of the combined heavy metal group (3.109–4.589 W m?3). The Rs of the biosensors in the combined heavy metal group were 0.868Ω and 0.860, which were higher than 0.768Ω of the single heavy metal sensor. With the increase of the concentration of heavy metals in the influent, the increase of Rct was more obvious in the combined group, while the Rs in the single group significantly increased (P < 0.05). The results imply that it is possible for MFC biosensors to be used in the detection of actual water polluted by various heavy metals, but the biosensor performance is mainly limited by Rct, which needs to be further improved.  相似文献

A microbial fuel cell (MFC) was integrated with flat sheet membrane bioreactor (MBR) and studied for electricity generation, membrane fouling mitigation and artificial wastewater treatment. The cell potential was ∼0.2 V with 100 Ω external load during closed circuit operation. Batch tests identified that the sludge properties and aeration in cathodic chamber were the main affecting factors on electricity generation. Integration of microbial fuel cell can significantly alleviate membrane fouling, under closed circuit condition, membrane filtration lasted 21 days – 27 days and under the open circuit condition it lasted only 13 days - 15 days, before the transmembrane pressure (TMP) reached 0.03 MPa. The calculated electrostatic repulsion force between membrane surface and membrane foulant was about 2.5 × 10−14 N in this integrated reactor. The chemical oxygen demand (COD), ammonia nitrogen, phosphorus and offensive smell could be effectively removed by the sequential anaerobic-aerobic treatment system. The effluent pH was neutral and turbidity was very low.  相似文献

Sediment microbial fuel cells (SMFCs) are being developed as a renewable power source to aid environmental remediation and provide remote monitoring. But long start-up times limit their use as a viable industrial approach. In this study, we sampled sediments from seven different levels of eutrophication lakes and investigated the effects of their initial sediment properties (ISP) on the start-up times of SMFCs. After 60 days, ISP showed a clear influence on SMFCs with start-up times ranging from 7 to 21 days at different sampling sites. Organic matter, especially the labile carbon pools and nitrogen (organic and inorganic) contents in sediment, were closely related to start-up times for the SMFCs. In addition, dehydrogenase activity and high-throughput sequencing revealed that microorganisms in the nutrient enrichment sediments increased organic matter degradation and produced special species such as genus Candidatus Xiphinematobacter that belong to the Verrucomicrobia phyla related to electron transfer. Such active control may improve applicability by accelerating start-up and enhancing SMFC power and bio-catalytic performance.  相似文献

The conventional methods for biofuel production provide a clean and renewable approach for bioenergy generation. However, the efficiency of these processes is still too low to compete with the existing technologies. Integrated bioprocesses could help in improving the overall yield and cost-effectiveness of the process. The present study deals with the evaluation of process efficiency in single, two and three-stage operation of dark fermentation, biomethanation and microbial fuels cells for recovering maximum energy from the invasive aquatic plant, water hyacinth. The merits and demerits of each process operated individually or in combination were evaluated. The results showed the integrated three-stage process yielded maximum energy recovery of 60% in the form of hydrogen, methane, and electricity with an overall COD removal of 94%. The present research work thus highlights the possibility of integrated hydrogen or methane-based biorefinery approach for the recovery of bioenergy from biomass.  相似文献
