Estimation of Thermodynamic Properties from Binary Phase Diagram

The general relationship between binary phase diagrams and the thermodynamic properties was system-atically derived without any assumption.A procedure was presented to estimate the thermodynamic proper-ties from the binary phase diagrams.     

Application d'une méthodologie expérimentale à l'étude du diagramme ternaire d'un gel

Nous avons montré sur l'exemple d'un gel, mélange de trois constituants (C12–C15 Alcohols Benzoate, Cyclomethicone et Ethylene Vinyl Acetate Copolymer) qu'il est possible d'optimiser une formulation en un nombre preécis d'essais en faisant appel à une stratégic expérimentale optimale. Le gel avait déjàétéétudié par Chang,¹ mais par approches successives.
Nous avons utlisé les matrices d'expériences développées dans le cas des mélanges par Scheffe sous le nom de 'reseaux-simplex'. Prévoyant des intéractions de 2éme ordre entre les constituants nous avons retenu le modéle appelé'cubique réduit'. Cette approche permet l'exploration systémique de tout le domaine.
Les réponses étudiées sont la compatibilité (gel homogène ou non), la consistance, la blancheur et le coût. Le meilleur gel étant celui qui se rapproche le plus de la vaseline.
A partir des résultats, nous avons tracé des courbes d'isoréponse en blancheur, consistance et coût. La superposition des diagrammes conduit à la détermination d'une zone où les réponses sont optimales.
En ajoutant la réponse supplémentaire: 'facilité d'étalement sur la peau'on arrive au meilleur gel avec un nombre réduit d'essais.
La même méthode s'appliquerait à des mélanges de plus de trois constituants.

Thermodynamic state of reinforced interpenetrating polymer networks

The free energies of mixing of two networks in the interpenetrating polymer network based on crosslinked polyurethane and poly(ester acrylate) have been determined by the vapour sorption method. It was established that the constituent networks in the IPN are not miscible. The introduction of fillers of different chemical nature increases the compatibility. The thermodynamic affinity of the fillers to the individual networks and IPN was estimated. It was established that when the free energy of interaction of one or both components of the IPN with the filler is negative, reinforcement leads to the formation of a compatible and equilibrium system. For fillers having no affinity to the polymers, compatibilization is observed, which is connected with slowing down of phase separation in the system in the presence of filler.     

Experimental assessment of the Ru–Al–Ni ternary phase diagram at 1000 and 1100 °C

Knowledge of phase equilibria in the Ru–Al–Ni ternary system is relevant to the development of new single crystal Ni-based superalloys as well as to new high temperature protective coating systems for these alloys. A series of diffusion couple investigations have been performed across the Ru–Al–Ni ternary system in order to establish phase fields and possible diffusion paths. A continuous B2 phase has been shown to exist across the Ru–Al–Ni ternary between the RuAl and NiAl phases at temperatures of 1000 and 1100 °C. Ternary isothermal sections for Ru–Al–Ni at 1000 and 1100 °C are presented.     

T(x) phase diagram of the Cu2Se-Al2Se3 system

Twenty alloys of various compositions in the Cu₂Se-Al₂Se₃ system were prepared and investigated. The T(x) phase diagram of the Cu₂Se-Al₂Se₃ system was obtained from x-ray diffraction, differential thermal analysis, and microstructure investigation for the first time. The homogeneity region of the CuAlSe₂ semiconducting compound was established. Previous articles by this author were presented with the spelling of his name as B.V. Korzun.     

Data requirements for neutron activation: Part I: Cross sections

Existing neutron cross section libraries such as EAF-2003 contain a large number of reactions. Of these only a small proportion are significant in the production of the nuclides that dominate activation quantities such as activity or γ-dose rate at various decay times. These reactions were identified in a recent extensive set of calculations on all the elements and reported in the ‘Activation Handbook’. These 1340 reactions are considered here and the set of reactions with no differential or integral data are listed and prioritised. A set of 339 reactions with very limited possibility of measurement are given; these require further study by theoretical calculations. A set of 100 reactions with either discrepant or no data, that might be measurable are listed and are recommended to be the subject of future experimental work.
