BACKGROUND: Three groups of amino acids were previously characterized based on their ability to be assimilated as carbon source by Penicillium camembertii. To describe the diauxic growth recorded on glucose and amino acids from the second group, such as arginine, an unstructured model was previously developed, based on the sequential consumption of both carbon substrates, glucose, followed after its exhaustion, by arginine. The model was modified to describe also the behaviour recorded during growth on other amino acids. RESULTS: The growth model involved the carbon substrate consumption (Verlhust model) and the biomass on carbon substrate yield. Glucose was therefore considered during P. camembertii growth on nitrogen source amino acids (lysine—first group); and amino acid consumption was considered during growth on carbon source amino acids (glutamate—third group), with glucose being dissimilated only for energy supply. The excess nitrogen from amino acids was released as ammonium; the linking of this production to growth was found to increase with the ability of the amino acid to be assimilated as carbon source by P. camembertii. CONCLUSION: The various metabolic behaviours recorded during P. camembertii growth on amino acids, in the presence of a primary carbon source such as glucose, were proved to be satisfactorily described by the model, showing the robustness of the model. Alignment of single wall carbon nanotubes (SWNT) in liquid crystalline (LC) polymer matrix imparting orientation to the nanotubes along the nematic director was studied by atomic force microscopy, measurements of electrical conductivity and Raman spectroscopy of the composite in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the nematic director. The composites were prepared through dispersion of SWNT with LC monomer in a common solvent, their alignment in nematic monomer and consequent UV polymerization of the monomer. The anisotropy of electrical and optical properties of the system depends strongly on the concentration of the nanotubes in the range of 1-10% SWNT being especially strong for smaller concentrations and negligible at higher loads. A simple semi-quantitative model is suggested to account for the orientational behavior of nanotubes in nematic matrices. It successfully describes the observed anisotropy of physical properties at microscale (up to 200 μm) in terms of anchoring of the polymer chains to the nanotubes surface and adjustment of the nanotubes orientation to the nematic direction due to such coupling. The increasing disorientation of the nematic domains at higher nanotubes loads is explained as a development of larger number of LC defects induced by the nanotubes in the nematic matrix due to their intrinsic nature of aggregation. The anisotropy of physical properties at macro scale (several millimeters) is much smaller and less dependable on SWNT concentration because differently oriented LC domains effectively wash out the anisotropy. 相似文献

Methane/natural gas storage and delivered capacity for three different activated carbons in dry and wet conditions were measured. In all tests the temperature of the bed was maintained constant at 277.15 K and pressure was increased up to 10 MPa. Natural gas storage capacity was less than methane storage capacity in dry conditions for all the three activated carbons tested, while the gas delivery was almost the same. One of activated carbon tested (NC120) showed the possibility of hydrate forming for pressures higher than 4 MPa but the amount of gas stored still was less than the amount stored in dry conditions over the whole range of pressure. The analysis of the gas delivered at each pressure steps shows that considerable amount of heavy components do not come out from the bed even at very low pressures in both dry and wet condition tests. Repeatability of the sorption/desorption processes - vital for possible commercial/industrial use - has been examined over various cycles. 相似文献

A simple method has been devised for immobilization of acetylcholinesterase (AChE) covalent bonding to a multiwall carbon
nanotube (MWNT)-cross-linked cellulose acetate composite on a screen-printed carbon electrode (SPCE) and a sensitive and disposable
amperometric sensor for rapid determination of carbaryl pesticide is proposed. The immobilized enzyme was preserved on this
film because of the excellent biocompatibility and non-toxicity of cellulose acetate. Based on the inherent conductive properties
of the MWNT, the immobilized AChE had greater affinity for ATCl and excellent catalytic effect in the hydrolysis of ATCl.
MWNT improved the interface enzymatic hydrolysis reaction and increased the amperometric response of the sensor. Under optimum
conditions, the inhibition of carbaryl on AChE increased linearly with the increasing concentration of carbaryl in two ranges,
from 0.01 to 0.5 μg mL−1 and from 2 to 20 μg mL−1, with the correlation coefficients of 0.9985 and 0.9977, respectively. The detection limit was 0.004 μg mL−1 taken as the concentration equivalent to 10% decrease in signal. The sensor showed acceptable stability, accuracy and could
be fabricated in batches, thus it is economic and portable. This type of disposable enzyme-based amperometric sensor has extensive

Polyaniline/carboxylated multi-walled carbon nanotube (PAni/c-MWNT) nanocomposites have been synthesized by micellar aided emulsion polymerization with various c-MWNTs compositions, viz., 0.5, 1, 5, and 10 wt %. The microcrystalline parameters such as the nanocrystal size (〈N〉), lattice strain (g), interplanar distance (dhkl), width of the crystallite size distribution, surface weighted crystal size (Ds), and volume of the ordered regions were calculated from the X-ray data by using two mathematical models, namely the Exponential distribution and Reinhold distribution methods. The effects of heat ageing on the microcrystalline parameters of the PAni/c-MWNT nanocomposites were also studied and the results are correlated. The thermal stability and electrical resistivity of the PAni/c-MWNT nanocomposites were examined with thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) and a conventional two-probe method. The TGA data indicate that the thermal stability of the nanocomposites improved after the incorporation of c-MWNTs.
