Typically in case-based reasoning (CBR)approaches to product recommendation, the itemsrecommended are those that are most similar toa target query representing the elicitedrequirements of the user. Usually in practice,the user is required to specify a singlepreferred value for each attribute in thequery. However, we argue that a more flexibleapproach to requirements elicitation isnecessary to meet the needs of different users,ranging from those who know exactly what theyare looking for to those whose requirements arevague in the extreme. An important influence on our preference toward a specific object is its associations with affective information. Here, the authors concentrate on the role of memory on shaping such preferences. Specifically, the authors used a multistage behavioral paradigm that fostered associations between neutral shapes and affective images. Participants that explicitly remembered these affective associations preferred neutral shapes associated with positive images. Counterintuitively, participants who could not explicitly remember the associations preferred neutral shapes that were associated with negative images. Generally, the difference in preference between participants who could and could not remember the affective associations demonstrates a critical link between memory and preference formation. The authors propose that the preference for negatively associated items is a manifestation of a mechanism that produces an inherent incentive for rapidly assessing potentially threatening aspects in the environment. Eight experiments examined facial expressions of surprise in adults. Surprise was induced by disconfirming a previously established schema or expectancy. Self-reports and behavioral measures indicated the presence of surprise in most participants, but surprise expressions were observed only in 4%-25%, and most displays consisted of eyebrow raising only; the full, 3-component display was never seen. Experimental variations of surprise intensity, sociality, and duration/complexity of the surprising event did not change these results. Electromyographic measurement failed to detect notably more brow raisings and, in one study, revealed a decrease of frontalis muscle activity in the majority of the participants. Schlosberg's dimensional theory of emotion, including the dimension of tension-sleep, is tested to compare results obtained previously with American college students with those obtained in this study using Greek Ss. 15 Greek villagers and 15 college students in Athens comprised the 2 experimental groups which differed from each other in educational level and in lifetime movie attendance. The data indicate that Schlosberg's conclusions are now valid for non-Western groups as well as Western. Furthermore an emotion solid can be plotted from data collected by making use of Schlosberg's procedure, but the shape of the solid is not the same as that previously presented by Schlosberg. 18 references. Four experiments demonstrated implicit self-esteem compensation (ISEC) in response to threats involving gender identity (Experiment 1), implicit racism (Experiment 2), and social rejection (Experiments 3-4). Under conditions in which people might be expected to suffer a blow to self-worth, they instead showed high scores on 2 implicit self-esteem measures. There was no comparable effect on explicit self-esteem. However, ISEC was eliminated following self-affirmation (Experiment 3). Furthermore, threat manipulations increased automatic intergroup bias, but ISEC mediated these relationships (Experiments 2-3). Thus, a process that serves as damage control for the self may have negative social consequences. Finally, pretest anxiety mediated the relationship between threat and ISEC (Experiment 3), whereas ISEC negatively predicted anxiety among high-threat participants (Experiment 4), suggesting that ISEC may function to regulate anxiety.
