Displays with low pixel densities that were common in the 1980s and 1990s were shown to impair visual performance. Display technology, especially pixel density, has tremendously improved in recent years and new technologies allow densities of 264 ppi and beyond. Two experiments were conducted to test whether there are any measurable benefits of high pixel density displays (264 ppi) over moderate pixel density displays (132 ppi). In Experiment 1, participants performed a reading comprehension task on a display with either high or low pixel density. In Experiment 2, participants’ speed and performance in a proofreading task were compared using the same displays with high and low pixel density. There were no differences in reading comprehension and reading time (Experiment 1) as well as proofreading speed and performance (Experiment 2) between a 132 ppi and a 264 ppi display. However, subjective ratings of physical discomfort revealed significantly more complaints about headache and musculoskeletal strain in the 132 ppi condition than in the 264 ppi condition (Experiment 2). Reading comprehension, reading speed, and proofreading performance are unaffected by pixel densities above 132 ppi, but reading from high-resolution screens seems to be less exhausting at least subjectively. Thus, while large performance differences cannot be expected, displays with high pixel densities (264 ppi and above) have some advantage over displays with moderate (132 ppi or lower) pixel densities.  相似文献

In the few years since its release, Apple's iPad has generated much discussion about its potential to support student learning at all levels of the education system. Much of this has focused on its physical and technical attributes, such as portability, touch-display, connectivity, and large array of apps. However, a few studies have begun to explore possible advantages of iPads being used as public work spaces, enabling students to interact more collaboratively when creating learning outputs. These studies point to other affordances such as the iPad's ability to lay flat on a desk or be propped at a convenient angle, its wide viewing range and multi-user accessible interface, as being particularly relevant in supporting collaboration.Between June and November 2013, researchers from the University of Waikato used a specifically developed ‘observeware’ app to capture display and audio data while young students (5 year olds) were using iPads in pairs for developing numeracy, literacy and problem-solving/decision-making skills. The study used Mercer's (1994) talk types framework to explore the nature of talk students engaged in while they were using the iPads and interacting with each other and their teacher, and also how features of the device may have influenced this.Results indicated exceptionally high levels of on-task talk, but that this was mostly of an affirming and non-critical nature and unsupportive of outcome improvement or refinement. While the iPad offered unique potential as a shared, public learning device, the pedagogical role of the teacher in realising this by helping students learn appropriate ‘ground rules’ to raise talk quality, was critical. This article details the methodology used and the results of the study. It discusses the important role teachers play in helping young students build oral-interaction strategies to capitalise on high levels of learning engagement, and the unique features of these devices.  相似文献

Individuals with a comorbid diagnosis of cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder can have significant communication deficits. The implementation of an alternative and augmentative communication (AAC) device is often essential to promote language development and participation in school, home and community environments. The present study evaluated the impact of introducing a high-tech alternative and augmentative device, namely an Apple iPad with the “GoTalk Now” communication application to a student diagnosed with cerebral palsy and autism spectrum disorder. Integration of the technology focused on promoting key elements associated with long term AAC usage, namely, targeted training of the student, teacher, educational assistant and parents, over the course of the school year. Marked increases in the student's communication skills and non-academic school functioning were observed. The need for communication partner prompting declined over time while the student, teacher and parent remained engaged by the iPad solution. This case study supports the classroom implementation of high-tech communication devices for those with complex communication needs via a comprehensive access delivery protocol that invokes systematic student, teacher, educational assistant and parent training.  相似文献
