Report of the Ethics Committee, 2000.

Reports to the membership regarding the number and types of ethical complaints that are investigated in accordance with the bylaws of the American Psychological Association. In addition to the processing of cases, in 2000 significant action was taken toward the revision of the "Ethical Principles of Psychologists and Code of Conduct." Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology 1986: Martin T. Orne.

Martin T. Orne, the 1986 recipient of the Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology, was presented with a check for $2,000 and an engrossed citation of his contribution. Orne receives this award "for his efforts to integrate psychological theory and methods with the pragmatic concerns of psychotherapy, medicine, and law. Through his research he has helped practitioners to realize the potential benefits and limitations of hypnosis, lie detection, sleep, and biofeedback, and the roles played by specific and nonspecific factors in psychotherapy and behavioral medicine. His analysis of the social context of the experiment has elucidated the importance of demand characteristics in shaping experience and behavior, and helped alter the way in which both experimentalists and clinicians evaluate the reactions of subjects, clients, and patients. Psychologist, physician, scientist, clinician, editor, and expert witness, no one better exemplifies the theoretical and practical advantages of transcending disciplinary boundaries in the pursuit of our common goals." Distinguished teaching in psychology: Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr.

The Distinguished Teaching in Psychology award, which includes a check for $1,000, is given to the recipient for his or her contributions to the teaching of psychology. The following guidelines are used to determine the recipient: (a) demonstrated influence as a teacher of students who become outstanding psychologists, (b) development of effective teaching methods and/or teaching materials, (c) engagement in significant research on teaching, (d) development of innovative curricula and courses, (e) outstanding performance as a classroom teacher, (f) being an especially effective trainer of teachers of psychology, and (g) being responsible for administrative facilitation of outstanding teaching. This article provides a citation and a biography for Ludy T. Benjamin, Jr., one of the recipients of the award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology. Awards for distinguished international contributions.

Announces the 1998/1999 winners of the Distinguished International Contributions awards. Edwin A. Fleishman received the Award for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology and Nila Kapor-Stanulovic received the International Humanitarian Award. International humanitarian award.

The International Humanitarian Award recognizes extraordinary humanitarian services and activism by psychologists, including professional and volunteer work conducted primarily in the field with underserved populations. Award recipients are psychologists who, by their extraordinary service at a difficult time, improve the lives and contribute to the well-being of people in a large or small geographic area anywhere in the world.
