The Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale--Third Edition (WAIS-III; D. Wechsler, 1997a) and the Wechsler Memory Scale--Third Edition (WMS-III; D. Wechsler, 1997b) are 2 of the most frequently used measures in psychology and neuropsychology. To facilitate the diagnostic use of these measures in the clinical decision-making process, this article provides information on education-stratified, directional prevalence rates (i.e., base rates) of discrepancy scores between the major index scores for the WAIS-III, the WMS-III, and between the WAIS-III and WMS-III. To illustrate how such base-rate data can be clinically used, this article reviews the relative risk (i.e., odds ratio) of empirically defined "rare" cognitive deficits in 2 of the clinical samples presented in the WAIS-III--WMS-III Technical Manual (The Psychological Corporation, 1997). Adult image recognition is an important technique for preventing children from accessing offensive material on the Internet. Most of the related works focus on single image recognition. However, adult images usually exist as a group and rarely stand alone. Therefore, considering the entire image group as a whole for classification should be more effective. This paper presents a new method of detecting adult image groups, which aims at achieving optimal recognition accuracy. Adult image group recognition generally includes two components: an adult image recogniser and a final decision rule for classifying the image group. We provide a theoretical analysis to clarify the correlation of the two components and use probability formulae to estimate the recognition rates for different settings of the adult image recogniser and the decision rule. Then, a set of optimal receiver-operating characteristic (ROC) curves for different image numbers is solved. To recognise an unknown image group, a desired recall rate for adult (or benign) image groups is specified and the system is set according to the parameters acquired from the optimal ROC curves. The proposed method can be dynamically adapted to the recall rates that the user expects. This advantage makes the proposed system more suitable for real applications. Our work can be viewed as an extension of single image recognition and the experimental results demonstrate that it can attain higher recognition accuracy than the earlier methods.  相似文献

The Web is a perfect backdrop for opinion formation as a multitude of different opinions is publicly available. However, the different opinions often remain unexploited: Learners prefer preference-consistent over preference-inconsistent information, a phenomenon called confirmation bias. Two experiments were designed to test whether technologies such as recommender systems can be used to overcome this bias. The role of preference-inconsistent recommendations was explored by comparing their influence to a condition with preference-consistent recommendations and to a control condition without recommendations. In Study 1, preference-inconsistent recommendations led to a reduction of confirmation bias and to a more moderate view of the controversial topic of neuro-enhancement. In Study 2, we found that preference-inconsistent recommendations stimulated balanced recall and divergent thinking. Together these studies showed that preference-inconsistent recommendations are an effective approach for reducing confirmation bias and stimulating divergent thinking. In conclusion, future research and practical implications are discussed.  相似文献

This study investigates Chinese students' gender differences in their actual use of the web for online information seeking. One hundred and seven Chinese university students responded to questionnaires regarding their perceptions about the use of the web for learning purposes. Afterwards, all the participants were asked to search online to answer two questions about bees' decision for hive location. As they searched, the online system logged participants' search activities during the search, including the type of activities during search, the frequency of each activity and the time spent on each activity. Participants were compared by gender in terms of their web search efficacy, web search anxiety, frequency counts of different web search activities, time spent on each search activity and search task performance. Web search efficacy levels varied by gender but not by performance levels. Anxiety did not vary by gender or performance levels. The interaction effect between gender and performance level was found in several search process variables: significant gender differences were only found in medium-performing students wherein males were engaged in more search activities than females, as seen in the larger number of searches, search queries, and times male students updated the search queries. One factor that could explain the significant gender differences in the medium-level group was their web search efficacy. The more confident medium-performing male students were in web search, the less need they perceived to access information to solve the task. This pattern was reversed for medium-performing females. The high- and low-performing males did not differ much from females in their search activities. It appeared that students' perceptions of their web search ability did not contribute much to their search activities in these two groups. Implications of the findings were also discussed.  相似文献

Teacher educators play an influential role in the chain of improvement needed to address gaps in vocabulary knowledge and performance for some children. If created in careful accordance to design principles, multimedia can serve as a tool to improve preservice teacher knowledge in this domain. The present experimental study investigated a multimedia-based intervention, which pairs a modeling video with a Content Acquisition Podcast (i.e., video plus CAP), to teach preservice teachers (n = 101) about an effective vocabulary intervention for students at risk for or with learning disabilities. Preservice teachers were randomly assigned to either watch a video plus CAP or read a practitioner-friendly reading on vocabulary instruction. Those who watched the video plus CAP significantly outperformed the comparison group on a posttest and maintenance test of knowledge.  相似文献

Our article profiles the evolution of a fully online writing course designed for adult learners in our university's Prior Learning Assessment Program. Based on our own observations and experiences teaching adult learners online, we question if the virtual learning environment presents different challenges and prospects for the adult learner versus the traditional student learner, along with an extension and complication of the more social metaphors of “virtual community.” Moreover, because of the changing demographic from traditional to adult students, we argue that this change also fosters a change in the relationship between teachers and students. In chronicling this relationship, we note problems when the labor of adult education becomes invisible to those supervising online instructors. Because of these “invisible” labor issues, we argue that successful online instruction must include a range of interactions between students and instructors that extend the more public concept of community to better acknowledge the importance of personal, private interaction. Thus, we conclude with a call to rethink our online writing pedagogies to be more flexible to adult learner needs and learning styles, simultaneously recognizing the impact of adult online education on faculty workload.  相似文献

Canadian clinicians have used American norms for adult intelligence tests for more than 60 years. However, the availability of the Canadian norms for the WAIS-III prompts clinicians in Canada to make a decision regarding which norms to use in clinical practice. The purpose of this study is to compare the interpretive effects of applying American and Canadian normative systems in a sample of 100 forensic psychiatry and neuropsychiatry inpatients. The Canadian normative system yielded scores that were systematically lower than the American scores. Thus, clinicians may conclude greater impairment in intellectual ability when using Canadian norms. The index scores that were most similar were Processing Speed followed by Verbal Comprehension. With the exception of these two indices, clinically different conclusions might be derived on 13-21% of individual IQ or Index scores for these patients. The scores that differed the most were the Full Scale IQ and the Performance IQ. The subtests, in general, were highly similar across the normative systems, although scores using the Canadian norms were systematically lower.
