These awards are given by the Education and Training Awards Committee in recognition of the efforts of psychologists who have made distinguished contributions to education and training, who have produced imaginative innovations, or who have been involved in the developmental phases of programs in education and training in psychology. These contributions might include important research on education or training; the development of effective materials for instruction; the establishment of workshops, conferences, or networks of communication for education and training; achievement and leadership in administration that facilitates education and training; and activity in professional organizations that promote excellence. This year's winner is Diane F. Halpern. Very few scholars have made so many important and diverse contributions to the advancement of quality education as has Halpern. She has applied the theories, empirical methods, and knowledge of cognitive psychology and psychometrics to educational practices that are designed to help students become better thinkers and learners. The Committee on International Relations in Psychology confers the Award(s) for Distinguished Contributions to the International Advancement of Psychology to an individual(s) who has made sustained and enduring contributions to international cooperation and the advancement of knowledge of psychology. In accordance with established custom, the award winners have agreed to present addresses on some phase of their contributions to research in the international psychological field at the 1997 convention. Award addresses delivered in 1996 are published in the April 1997 American Psychologist. One of the two winners is Anthony J. Marsella. Marsella has promoted cross-cultural understanding and acceptance as a key to peace within and among nations. Marsella has conducted international research for three decades, as a Fulbright Scholar in the Philippines, a project director for a psychiatric epidemiological study in Borneo, a National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) Culture and Mental Health Fellow at the East-West Center in Honolulu, Hawaii, and a professor of psychology and director of the World Health Organization (WHO) at the University of Hawaii at Manoa. At present, in addition to holding the latter two positions, he is director of the Clinical Studies Program at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a member of the American Psychological Association Task Force on Urban Initiatives.
