On August 28, 1973, at the annual meeting of the APA in Montreal, the American Psychological Foundation announced the recipients of the Gold Medal Award, the Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology Awards, and the National Media Awards. The presentations were made by Henry W. Riecken, President of the American Psychological Foundation (APF). Harry F. Harlow received the Gold Medal Award; James B. Maas and Frank J. McGuigan were given the Teaching Awards; and Gerald Jonas, ABC News and Jules Power Productions, the Great Atlantic Radio Conspiracy, Christine Darg, and Elliott Aronson were the recipients of the National Media Awards. Other members of the APF are Nicholas Hobbs, Gardner Lindzey (Vice-President}, Boris E. Cherney (Treasurer), George Miller, George Albee, William Bevan, Kenneth B. Little (Secretary), Kenneth B. Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1976 Early Career Award by Rochel S. Gelman. The award citation reads: "For her outstanding contributions to our understanding of the early development of number knowledge and skills, of the important role of attentional processes in the child's cognitive performance and cognitive growth, and, with Marilyn Shatz, of the young child's ability to adapt his communication behavior to the information processing capacities of his listener in certain situations. Her research has compelled developmental psychologists to rethink the processes that might underlie the child's basic understanding of important concepts, as well as the processes that might influence the child's ability to use that understanding in specific task contexts." A biography and a listing of the recipient's scientific writings are also included. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

The Early Career Awards, given for the first time in 1974, recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not have held a PhD for more than eight years. For purposes of this award, psychology has been divided into nine areas: human learning and cognition, psychopathology, physiological, animal learning and behavior; personality, developmental, social, sensation and perception, and applied research. Three areas are considered each year, with areas rotated in three-year cycles. The areas considered in 198 7 were human learning and cognition, psychopathology and physiological and biological. Every year, panels ate selected for the areas under consideration, and these panels recommend nominees to the Committee on Scientific Awards. Marshall Haith, chair of the committee, presented each winner with a check and a citation recognizing his contribution. Other committee members were Lyn Abramson, Patricia Carpenter, Brenda Milner, Mary Tenopyr, and Mark Zanna. The panel members for 1987 were Alice F. Healy, James H. Neely, and Douglas Nelson for human learning and cognition; Paul H. Blaney, Michael J. Goldstein, and Peter M. Lewinsohn for psychopathology; and Norman Adler, Darcy B. Kelley, and James B. Ranck for physiological and biological. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Starke R. Hathaway was presented with a Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award for his contributions to clinical psychology, which began in 1937 when he helped to organize the new University of Minnesota Hospitals Psychopathic Unit, having its primary commitment to research. Simultaneously, he began (with J. C. McKinley) to build the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, now the most thoroughly researched (over 6,000 publications) and widely used structured personality test. Equally important was his gently probing Socratic intellectual influence on graduate students, who often became leading teachers, researchers, practitioners, and administrators, spreading the influential 'Minnesota viewpoint'-- skeptical, empirical, quantitative, biological, tough-minded, and emphasizing the cognitive and existential aspects of psychotherapy years before their general acceptance. This article describes the career and scientific achievements of David Shakow, PhD. Shakow was a major figure of 20th-century American psychology, one of only two persons honored by the American Psychological Association with two of its most prestigious awards: the Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award and the Distinguished Professional Contribution Award. These two honors embodied the essence of Shakow's career. The award for scientific activity was given for basic contributions that enlarged our understanding of the processes underlying the psychological deficit manifested by schizophrenic patients. These studies spanned half a century, beginning in 1932 and concluding 50 years later, when his final publication on this subject appeared a year after his death. The award for professional achievement recognized his role as the father of contemporary clinical psychology. Shakow, by precept and example, gave meaning to the Boulder model for training clinical psychologists. He provided leadership in espousing the view that the clinical psychologist's role is that of both scientist and practitioner in the mental health field. He deeply respected both activities but gave primacy to the clinical psychologist as research scientist. His credo was one that, on reflection, was as applicable to the practitioner as it was to the researcher. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献
