Frank Joseph McGuigan: Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology Awards.

Recognizes Frank Joseph McGuigan as the winner of the American Psychological Association's 1973 Distinguished Contributions to Education in Psychology Award. The citation reads: "To Frank Joseph McGuigan--A successful teacher and scholar, because he is, first, a genuinely zealous student of psychology and a powerful source of inspiration in deed and word to those who have worked with him." James Emmett Birren: Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Acknowledges the presentation of the American Psychological Association (APA) 1968 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to James Emmett Birren. The citation reads: "For his internationally recognized leadership in the field of behavior gerontology, based upon years of experimental research on neurological, sensory, perceptual, and thinking functions. He has particularly emphasized the analysis of speed and accuracy and their physiological correlates in relation to age in the elderly. His work has contributed support for the hypothesis that reduced input of information is an important key to much apparent intellectual decline in the aged." Floyd H. Allport: American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award: 1968.

At the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in 1968, the American Psychological Foundation (APF) announced the recipient of the APF Gold Medal Award. The presentation was made by Kenneth E. Clark, President of the APF, to Floyd H. Allport. As professor of social and political psychology in the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Allport directed the first doctoral program in social psychology in the US. Although Allport's experimental work first appeared in 1920, his major impact came with the 1924 appearance of his Social Psychology. His interests in the late 1920s and early 1930s were the investigation of social attitudes and the study of institutional behavior. Allport's contributions have had two major consequences: (a) he shaped the field of social psychology as an area concerned with the basic problems of social influence in which measurement of human behavior is the primary focus, and (b) he furnished the rationale and the example for the behavioral trend in the social sciences. Paul Thomas Young: Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Presents the 1965 American Psychological Association Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to Paul Thomas Young. The citation reads: "For his lifelong study of hedonic processes in behavior. Convinced of their significance for psychology, he endeavored to give objective reference and experimental validity to the concept. Although hedonic theorizing ran counter to the prevailing temper, he persisted in the belief that the control of behavior must be analyzed for affective value as well as intensity value. His research on preference showed the effect of experience in modifying acceptability; his work on need-free organisms clarified acceptance and appetitive behavior. Most recently, he has been examining composite stimuli and preference. Current renewed interest in hedonic theory rests in good measure on his experimental demonstrations and theoretical arguments." Noble H. Kelley.

Presents the biography and scientific publications for Noble H. Kelley, the recipient of the 1974 Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution. For more than twenty years Secretary-Treasurer, Executive Officer, and Trustee of the American Board of Professional Psychology, he had come to personify the high standards of that respected institution, having for so long helped to articulate and implement its pursuit of excellence. While following a productive academic career that saw him head the departments and direct the psychological services at two universities, he gave his selfless devotion to the cause of identifying and enhancing competence in the professional application of psychology to human problems. Always ready to serve his profession, he devoted his time and his energies and gave his wise and experienced counsel to his colleagues and their organizations. His professional life spans a time which saw the maturing of the application of psychology as a professional endeavor, and to this development Noble H. Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award for 1976.

The American Psychological Association's Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award was given this year for the fourth time. This award is presented to a person who has engaged in a program of research that is both systematic and applied in character. The recipient is presented with a check for $1,000 and an engrossed citation of their contributions. This year's award was won by Fred S. Keller. The award was presented by Richard F. Thompson, Chair of the Committee on Scientific Awards. Other members of the committee are Dorothea Hurvich, Walter Mischel, Lorrin A. Riggs, Janet T. Spence, and Elaine Walster.
