Corrosion behaviour of decorative and wear resistant coatings on steel deposited by reactive magnetron sputtering - Tests and improvements

Depositions of decorative and wear resistant single layer coatings like TiN, Ti(B,N), CrN, NbN, NbON, (Ti,Mg)N and multilayer coatings like Cr/CrN, Nb/NbN, CrN/NbN and NbN/Nb-C:H were performed using reactive magnetron sputtering. The corrosion behaviour of the coated high speed steel substrates was studied in sodium chloride containing media by open-circuit-potential measurements, potentiodynamic corrosion tests and salt spray tests. Up to now, the best improvements with respect to the corrosion resistance in salt spray tests could be obtained for the system (Ti,Mg)N/high speed steel.     

Water management in the Flemish steel industry: the Arcelor Gent case

Steel production is an energy- and water-intensive process: large quantities of water are used for cooling, process and environmental-technical applications. In the mid-1990s, Arcelor Gent, a large integrated carbon steel producing company in Flanders (Belgium), started a number of water-related projects: the existing water infrastructure was adapted: the water from the coke plant was biologically treated; canal water was demineralised using reverse osmosis; waste water from the blast furnaces was neutralised with alkaline water from the steel plant. As a result of these projects, the quantity of discharged waste water was reduced by a factor of 2 (water recycling doubled from a factor of 10 to a factor of 20), and the discharge of pollutants decreased. Also resource consumption decreased: lime used in the steel plant, could be recovered to precipitate Zn in the waste water of the blast furnaces. Arcelor Gent obtained for these projects several Environmental Awards.

某炼钢厂仿西班牙产品制造的板坯横移车运行机构采用分别驱动、变频调速、无人操纵自动控制技术。其减速器齿轮多次发生点蚀、塑性变形、断齿等事故或故障 ,严重时曾出现轮齿全部被剃光的现象。经分析 ,其根本原因是承载能力不足。通过重新选型设计 ,加大减速器中心距 ,彻底根除了断齿等事故隐患     

Influence of the surface conditions on permeation in the deuterium–MANET system

The condition of the surfaces is of crucial importance for the deuterium permeation through materials. In this work a study of the surface constants for the adsorption (σk₁) and release (σk₂) of deuterium under different surface conditions on the martensitic steel DIN 1.4914 (MANET) has been carried out. The growth of an oxide surface layer (Cr₂O₃) of about 25–30 nm in a MANET sample, heat treated in an oxidizing environment, compared to the bare MANET that have a ‘natural' oxide of about 5 nm has provoked a reduction of both the permeation rate and the recombination coefficient (about 3 orders of magnitude). In addition, the permeation governing process has changed from diffusion-limited to surface-limited. The measurements of the permeation rate of deuterium were performed by a gas-phase permeation technique over the temperature range 574–746 K and for deuterium driving pressures in the range from 3 to 10⁵ Pa.
