Modulation of exploratory behavior in female mice by protein-borne male urinary molecules

Male pheromones are believed to attract females and repel male mice in open field tests but, when tested in more complex environments, they can attract male mice in usually avoided areas. Females were tested in an apparatus with one dark and one light side, in the absence or presence of male urine or the major urinary proteins (MUPs) bearing the natural ligands. Diestrous females were slower in leaving from the dark area when male urine or MUPs were present in it. Estrogen-primed females showed the opposite behavior, with an increase in the same latency. The light-avoidance behavior of prepubertal females, or females reared without males was not influenced by the presence of male chemosignals. The results show that adult female mice can react to MUP-borne volatiles as to adult male urine and use them as cues of male mice, if they were previously exposed to male cues during infancy. MUP-borne molecules are, thus, the olfactory trace of males in the environment and modulate mice exploratory behavior.

Male Urinary Chemosignals Differentially Affect Aggressive Behavior in Male Mice

Chemical signals modulate aggressive behavior in mice. For example, male urinary cues enhance aggression against other adults: a resident mouse attacks a male but not a castrated intruder, unless it is anointed with male urine. Our purpose was to understand whether molecules excreted with urine also act as aggression triggers in a different context. Therefore, the effect of urine, or molecules purified from urine, voided by different animals (males or females), was tested on the aggression of male mice against pups. Latency to the first attack, percentage of pups receiving the first attack, and percentage of attacked pups after 5 and 15 min were recorded. At variance with intermale aggression, male urinary chemosignals sprayed on pups reduced infanticide, while female urine did not. Male urine also delayed infanticide when compared to female urine. Pups anointed with low molecular weight dialyzed urine and with the high molecular weight protein fraction were attacked later than controls. Pups anointed with Major Urinary Proteins (MUPs) also were attacked later. The volatiles retained by MUPs act in the same way as adult male urine. MUPs and their ligands did not modify biting of food items. The results show that mice do not perceive male chemosignals as compulsory aggression triggers but rather can consistently and differentially shape their behavior in response to the same molecules according to different contextual events.

三峡水库蓄水后水温变化对四大家鱼自然繁殖的影响

三峡水库蓄水后,坝下水温变化对四大家鱼关键生活史阶段造成一定影响。本文使用水温变化指标定量评价蓄水后水温的改变程度,分析水温改变对四大家鱼自然繁殖的影响。基于宜昌水文站1983-2013年长系列逐日水温资料,建立了25个具有生态意义的水温参数,利用变动范围法计算了三峡水库蓄水后25个水温参数变化度,对高度改变的水温参数采用线性回归方法评估其变化倾向,基于F检验法检验回归效果。分析四大家鱼自然繁殖时间与水温参数变化的关系,研究四大家鱼自然繁殖对水温过程变化的响应。结果表明：整体水温改变度达44.2%,高度改变的水温参数有7个,分别是1、4、10、11、12月平均水温、最低水温出现日期、水温达到18℃日期,水温改变度达87.9%、75.8%、74%、100%、100%、74%、89.9%,说明三峡水库蓄水后坝下水温发生显著变化;下泄水温在消落期4、5份偏低趋势明显,较蓄水前平均降低2.3、1.7℃,由于4、5月水温偏低导致水温达到18℃的日期发生显著变化,由蓄水前4月19日推迟至蓄水后5月4日,平均推迟15 d。四大家鱼自然繁殖时间与水温达到18℃的日期密切相关,下泄水温偏低造成其自然繁殖时间推迟,首次产卵推迟至5月中旬,整个繁殖季节由4-7月份压缩至5-6月份,研究成果为三峡水库开展生态调度提供科学支撑。     

The assessment of the damage probability of storage tanks in domino events triggered by fire

An approach aimed to the quantitative assessment of the risk caused by escalation scenarios triggered by fire was developed. Simplified models for the estimation of the vessel time to failure (ttf) with respect to the radiation intensity on the vessel shell were obtained using a multi-level approach to the analysis of vessel wall failure under different fire conditions. Each vessel “time to failure” calculated by this approach for the specific fire scenario of concern was compared to a reference time required for effective mitigation actions and related to the escalation probability. The failure probability of each vessel was correlated to the probability of scenarios involving multiple vessel failure as a consequence of the primary fire, thus allowing a comprehensive assessment of domino scenarios triggered by fire. The application of the methodology to the analysis of several case-studies allowed the estimation of the quantitative contribution of escalation events triggered by fire to the overall individual and societal risk indexes.

烃类球罐区属于重大危险源,DCS系统在安全控制方面存在诸多漏洞,一旦发生事故就不可控,因此,SIS系统的应用势在必行。依据IEC61511、IEC61508标准,从技术经济角度对比分析SIS与DCS几种不同集成方案的可行性,结合齐隆化工C5球罐区工艺设计对SIL进行安全定量评估,并针对齐隆化工在SIS与DCS无缝集成系统在安全控制方面存在的问题,提出适合企业现状的解决方案。
