Quit the Grey Limbo and Return to Paradise

In three projects, Matthew Cannon and Mascia Gianvanni of FutureScape Studio explore the possibilities of alleviating the mundaneness of urban life through the introduction of the absurdity of nature, which brings ‘joy and laughter to the stressed worker’. Devices range from a sardine on the London Underground and a giraffe in the office to injecting a sublime, painterly light into the city.     

2002 Award Winners: Distinguished Professional Contributions.

William T. Newsome: Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions.

Announces William T. Newsome as a recipient of the Award for Distinguished Scientific Contributions for 2002. A biographical statement is included, along with major works and contributions for the field. Newsome received this award for elucidating the relationship between neural activity and perception. Charles L. Brewer Award for Distinguished Teaching in Psychology: G. William Hill IV.

The 2004 Distinguished Teaching Award is awarded to G. William Hill IV. He is recognized as a superb teacher who has helped the Kennesaw State University faculty through ambitious programs in the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, built and sustained a regional psychology community through the vibrant Southeastern Conference on the Teaching of Psychology, and orchestrated highly successful national "best practice in psychology" conferences. Reaching beyond Uncle William: A century of William James in theory and in life.

During the hundred years since his death, James's works have developed a reputation for literary flair and personal appeal, but also for inconsistency and lack of rigor; this has contributed to more admiration than influence. He had a talent rare among intellectuals for popularization of complex ideas. Meanwhile, his difficult coming of age and his compelling personality have contributed to an iconic status as a kind of uncle figure in philosophy, psychology, religious studies, and more fields that he influenced, and in American intellectual life in general, rather than as a major philosopher and scholar. Often reflecting these ways of depicting James, his biographies have gone through three phases: in the early-to-middle twentieth century, emphasis on his development of theories as solutions to personal problems; since the 1960s, increased scrutiny of deep troubles in his private life; and recently renewed attention to intellectual factors especially as amplified by greater appreciation of James's theories in the last generation. Now, with so much knowledge and insight achieved for understanding his personal life and his contributions to many fields, a next frontier for biographical work will be in synthesis of these strands of the life of William James. Recent and prospective work offers the promise of finding deeper meaning and implications in his work beyond, and even through, his informal style, and with integration of his apparent inconsistencies. The psychologist’s dilemma: To subject the self to science—or science to the self?

William James, one of the major founders of modern scientific psychology, spoke often about "the psychologist's fallacy." This fallacy resulted (and still results) from the tendency of psychologists to confuse their analyses of subjective experience with the nature of so-called objective reality. A related, though less attended problem revolved (and revolves) around what I shall call "the psychologist's dilemma." Although this latter problem was shared by other psychologists at the turn of this century, I will discuss it with special reference to the thought and work of William James. I have chosen to do so partially because James's own psychological and philosophical works reflect the import and centrality of this dilemma in the history of the human sciences, and partially in recognition and honor of the one hundredth anniversary of James's two-volume masterpiece, The Principles of Psychology, which will be celebrated in 1990.
