Gravimetric and volumetric sampling techniques are reliable for the measurement of porosity in fully saturated granular filters. However, both methods require a significant effort to gather and prepare samples, are time intensive to process, and do not capture real-time changes. Portable impedance probes serve as a valuable alternative to these destructive and laborious sampling methods. These probes measure the dielectric properties of the soil-water mixtures from which the porosity of filters may be inferred. This study demonstrates that generalized calibrations can result in large errors for porosity estimation when using diverse and small-scale filter types. By comparing with gravimetric and volumetric based porosity measurements for saturated granular filter porosity, impedance probes with filter-specific calibration offer the reliability and confidence owing to its reduced error in a quick, nondestructive fashion. This paper also presents the results of a laboratory investigation using an impedance probe to monitor real-time changes in the porosity of saturated granular filters subjected to cyclic train loading.  相似文献

Undrained Lateral Pile Response in Sloping Ground   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1  
Three-dimensional finite element analyses were performed to study the behavior of piles in sloping ground under undrained lateral loading conditions. Piles of different diameter and length in sloping cohesive soils of different undrained shear strength and several ground slopes were considered. Based on the results of the finite element analyses, analytical formulations are derived for the ultimate load per unit length and the initial stiffness of hyperbolic p-y curves. New p-y criteria for static loading of piles in clay are proposed, which take into account the inclination of the slope and the adhesion of the pile-slope interface. These curves are used through a commercial subgrade reaction computer code to parametrically analyze the effect of slope inclination and pile adhesion on lateral displacements and bending moments. To validate the proposed p-y curves, a number of well documented lateral load tests are analyzed. Remarkable agreement is obtained between predicted and measured responses for a wide range of soil undrained shear strength and pile diameter, length, and stiffness.  相似文献

This paper presents the results of a laboratory investigation whose purpose was to evaluate the effects of compaction on the erodibility of cohesionless soils. By means of a recently developed flume experiment, sediment erosion rates and incipient motion, as a function of shear stress, average velocity, and dry density, have been determined for three compacted sand and gravel mixtures. A preliminary comparison of the incipient motion values shows that granular soils compacted at the Proctor optimum have a higher resistance to free surface flow erosion than those compacted at lower and higher densities. This leads one to infer that the Proctor optimum, generally used as a standard for construction, might also be an optimum for hydraulic resistance and stability. Additional comparison of the experimental data with two commonly used incipient motion criteria also suggests that Yang’s criterion is a better predictor of soil detachment than the Shields-Yalin criterion.  相似文献

Bed-load measurements comprise an important component in the development of reliable formulas, in an effort to obtain the necessary constitutive relations between the amount of transported material and flow parameters. The uncertainty of such measurements is rather well known, being much more pronounced at lower transport rates. This uncertainty stems from the multitude of factors affecting bed-load transport and the lack of available trustworthy measuring technologies. Predictions of the limiting case of nearly zero bed-load transport, typically reported in literature as threshold of motion or critical condition, are even more challenging. The purpose of this contribution is twofold. First, to examine the sensitivity of bed-load transport measurements at conditions moderately higher than critical, to the presence of a rather unobtrusive trap, designed through several iterations. Even under relatively simple laboratory flume channel and flow conditions, it proved difficult to measure the bed-load transport rate in a completely unbiased way. Second, to develop a methodology, together with the appropriate instrumentation, for determining the condition of incipient motion. The nonintrusive approach described here proved to be reliable in detecting even the slightest movements of a particle. At the same time, it demonstrates the complexity of the problem due to the highly fluctuating nature of turbulent flow.  相似文献

This paper evaluates the impact of intermittent wind generation on hourly equilibrium prices and output, using data on expected wind generation capacity and demand for 2020. Hourly wind data for the period 1993–2005 are used to obtain wind output generation profiles for thirty regions (onshore and offshore) across Great Britain. Matching the wind profiles for each month to the actual hourly demand (scaled to possible 2020 values), we find that the volatility of prices will increase, and that there is significant year-to-year variation in generators’ profits. Above-average wind speeds lead to below-average prices, but annual revenues for British wind generators (producing more in the winter) are almost as great as for base-load generators. In the presence of significant market power (the equivalent of two symmetric firms owning fossil-fuelled capacity, rather than six), the level of prices more than doubled, and their volatility increased. However, wind generators’ average revenues rose by 20% less than those of base-load plant.  相似文献

China has set an ambitious target to increase its wind power capacity by 35 GW from 2007 to 2020. The country’s hunger for clean power provides great opportunities for wind energy investors. However, risks from China’s uncertain electricity market regulation and an uncertain energy policy framework, mainly due to uncertain Clean Development Mechanism (CDM) benefits, prevent foreign investors from investing in China’s wind energy. The objectives of this paper are to: (1) quantify wind energy investment risk premiums in an uncertain international energy policy context and (2) evaluate the impact of uncertain CDM benefits on the net present values of wind power projects. With four scenarios, this study simulates possible prices of certified emissions reductions (CERs) from wind power projects. Project net present values (NPVs) have been calculated. The project risk premiums are drawn from different and uncertain CER prices. Our key findings show that uncertain CDM benefits will significantly affect the project NPVs. This paper concludes that the Chinese government needs revising its tariff incentives, most likely by introducing fixed feed-in tariffs (FITs), and re-examining its CDM-granting policy and its wind project tax rates, to facilitate wind power development and enable China to achieve its wind energy target.  相似文献

Increased interconnection has been highlighted as potentially facilitating the integration of wind generation in power systems by increasing the flexibility to balance the variable wind output. This paper utilizes a stochastic unit commitment model to simulate the impacts of increased interconnection for the island of Ireland with large penetrations of wind generation. The results suggest that increased interconnection should reduce average prices in Ireland, and the variability of those prices. The simulations also suggest that while increased interconnection may reduce carbon dioxide emissions in Ireland, Great Britain would experience an increase in emissions, resulting in total emissions remaining almost unchanged. The studies suggest that increased interconnection would not reduce excess wind generation. This is because under unit commitment techniques which incorporate wind power forecasts in the scheduling decisions, wind curtailment is minimal even with low levels of interconnection. As would be expected an increase in interconnection should improve system adequacy considerably with a significant reduction in the number of hours when the load and reserve constraints are not met.  相似文献

Turkey has remarkable wind energy potential, but its utilisation rate is very low. However, in 2007, energy investors applied to the Energy Market Regulatory Authority (EMRA) with 751 wind projects to obtain a 78180.2 MW wind power plant license. This paper first presents an overview of wind energy development in the world and then reviews related situations in Turkey. Second, to motivate the interest in wind energy investment, new wind power plant license applications in Turkey are analysed. Finally, wind electricity generation cost analyses were performed at 14 locations in Turkey. Capacity factors of investigated locations were calculated between 19.7% and 56.8%, and the production cost of electrical energy was between 1.73 and 4.99 $cent/kW h for two different wind shear coefficients.  相似文献

This paper presents a peak current mode control scheme of a boost rectifier with low distortion of the input current for wind power systems based on permanent magnet synchronous generators with variable speed operation. The three-phase boost rectifier is operated in discontinuous conduction mode (DCM), and power factor correction techniques are applied. It is shown that the DCM operation significantly reduces the total harmonic distortion of the currents in the permanent magnet synchronous generator, increasing the power factor of the system, so that the vibrations and mechanical stress of the generator are minimized. The characteristics of the DCM boost rectifier are studied considering: (1) the series resistance of the inductors; (2) the modeling and adjustment of peak current mode control yielding a stable loop; (3) the design of an input filter that reduces the switching noise in the currents of the generator.  相似文献

This work proposes the application of a recent compensation technique for input constraints avoidance to the pitch control of a wind turbine. The pitch angle actuators commonly present a hard limit on their rate of change together with the natural amplitude saturation, and a dynamics during their unconstrained operation that can be modeled as a first-order linear system. This dynamic behavior of the pitch actuator requires a particular design of the compensation method, which is based on variable structure systems to avoid both amplitude and rate input saturation by means of an auxiliary loop. The developed methodology reduces the pitch actuator activity necessary to regulate the generated power around its nominal value when facing sudden wind gusts. Another interesting feature of the proposal is that it allows the operator to fix conservative bounds for the actuator speed operation in order to increment the structural robustness of the wind turbine and to extend in this way the service life of the energy system. The effectiveness of the proposed strategy is evaluated by simulation results in an autonomous wind energy conversion system for water pumping with a brushless double feed induction generator (BDFIG).  相似文献
