Acknowledges the presentation of the American Psychological Association (APA) 1968 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award to James Emmett Birren. The citation reads: "For his internationally recognized leadership in the field of behavior gerontology, based upon years of experimental research on neurological, sensory, perceptual, and thinking functions. He has particularly emphasized the analysis of speed and accuracy and their physiological correlates in relation to age in the elderly. His work has contributed support for the hypothesis that reduced input of information is an important key to much apparent intellectual decline in the aged." A biography and a listing of the awardee's scientific writings are also included. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

At the annual meeting of the American Psychological Association in 1968, the American Psychological Foundation (APF) announced the recipient of the APF Gold Medal Award. The presentation was made by Kenneth E. Clark, President of the APF, to Floyd H. Allport. As professor of social and political psychology in the Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship and Public Affairs, Allport directed the first doctoral program in social psychology in the US. Although Allport's experimental work first appeared in 1920, his major impact came with the 1924 appearance of his Social Psychology. His interests in the late 1920s and early 1930s were the investigation of social attitudes and the study of institutional behavior. Allport's contributions have had two major consequences: (a) he shaped the field of social psychology as an area concerned with the basic problems of social influence in which measurement of human behavior is the primary focus, and (b) he furnished the rationale and the example for the behavioral trend in the social sciences. Immediately after reading "The History of Psychology Revisited: Or, Up with Our Foremothers" (Bernstein- [fem] & Russo[fem], February 1974), which decried the inability of readers to determine whether a reference is authored by a male or a female, I read in the same issue of the American Psychologist "What Psychology Is About" (Hebb[mal], February 1974). The latter article mentioned the early Russian psychologist Shenger-Krestovnikova, of whom I have never heard. I am nevertheless sure that this psychologist was female because the Russian language distinguishes between male and female last-name endings. This suggests a much-needed repair to our method of citation. We should add, at the end of each name, a suffix to indicate sex. The author gives several suggestions for how to accomplish this. Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1976 Distinguished Professional Contribution Award by John C. Flanagan. The award citation reads: "His many contributions to professional psychology began when he assembled the staff and directed the program of Aviation Psychology during World War II. Through ingenious test development and careful validation, this program not only made an important contribution to the combat effectiveness of the Air Corps but also demonstrated the potential of this kind of classification testing on a nationwide basis, more recently exemplified by Project TALENT. His career has been distinguished also by his founding and leadership of the American Institutes for Research. With great imagination and leadership, John C. Flanagan has made a distinguished contribution in professional psychology." A biography and a listing of the recipient's scientific writings are also included. Richard Chatham Atkinson was presented a Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award for combining classical methods of mathematics with emerging techniques of computer science, the best traditions of experimental psychology with new concepts of information processing, in the advancement of psychological theory and its applications. His long-term collaboration with Patrick Suppes yielded among its fruits the first extensive application of learning theory to multiperson interactions. With Richard M. Shiffrin, Atkinson developed the model that has set the pace for research on human short-term memory; with James Juola and others he developed an almost equally influential family of models for recognition and search processes. And on a quite different tack, Atkinson anticipated current demands for "relevance" with his pioneering contributions to computer-assisted instruction and optimization of learning. Starke R. Hathaway was presented with a Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award for his contributions to clinical psychology, which began in 1937 when he helped to organize the new University of Minnesota Hospitals Psychopathic Unit, having its primary commitment to research. Simultaneously, he began (with J. C. McKinley) to build the Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory, now the most thoroughly researched (over 6,000 publications) and widely used structured personality test. Equally important was his gently probing Socratic intellectual influence on graduate students, who often became leading teachers, researchers, practitioners, and administrators, spreading the influential 'Minnesota viewpoint'-- skeptical, empirical, quantitative, biological, tough-minded, and emphasizing the cognitive and existential aspects of psychotherapy years before their general acceptance. The three recipients of the Early Career Award, given for the first time in 1974, were drawn from the fields of psychopathology, human learning/cognition, and physiological psychology. The Committee on Scientific Awards postponed giving the award in 1975 in the fields of developmental, personality, and animal learning because several of the panels did not reach consensus on nominees. Therefore, the recipients for 1976 were drawn from those fields. The awards for 1977 were given in the areas of methodological, sensation/perception, and social psychology. Recipients of this award may not be more than 8 years post-PhD and are drawn from different areas on a rotating basis. In 1975 the awards will again be given in psychopathology, human learning/cognition, and physiological psychology. Every year a panel will be selected for each field in order to recommend a slate of nominees to the Committee on Scientific Awards. The panels for this year were Lewis R. Goldberg (Chair), Barry E. Collins, and E. Belvin Williams for methodological; Julian Hochberg (Chair), Robert M. Boynton, and Richard M. Held for sensation/perception; and John M. Darley (Chair), Leonard Berkowitz, and Alice Hendrickson Eagly for social. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)  相似文献

Thompson, Chair of the Committee on Scientific Awards. Other members of the committee are Dorothea Hurvich, Walter Mischel, Lorrin A. Riggs, Janet T. Spence, and Elaine Walster.
