Distinguished Scientific Contribution Awards for 1973.

The Awards for Distinguished Scientific Contribution are presented by the American Psychological Association at the annual convention. The awardees for this year are: Lee J. Cronbach, Conrad Kraft, Brenda Milner, and Benton J. Underwood. They were each presented with an award citation of his/her formal contributions to the development of scientific psychology and a check for one thousand dollars. These psychologists have agreed, in accordance with established custom, to present addresses on some phase of their scientific work at the 1974 Convention. The presentation of awards was made by R. Duncan Luce, Chair of the Committee on Scientific Awards. Other members of the Committee are Herschel Leibowitz, Brendan Maher, James Olds, Harold H. Kelley, and James J. Jenkins. Fred S. Keller: Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award.

Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1976 Distinguished Contribution for Applications in Psychology Award by Fred S. Keller. The award citation reads: "For an extraordinary range of boldly creative contributions to instructional procedures, extending from radio operators' schools in World War II, through the design of an introductory course in psychology in which students were brought into intimate contact with behavior as a subject matter, to the far-reaching principles of personalized instruction at all levels of higher education. By showing how a subject can be mastered step by step in a carefully constructed program, he has freed both student and teacher from the aversive by-products of crucial examinations, and in doing so has made learning not only more effective but more humane." Calvin W. Taylor: Richardson Creativity Award.

Presents the 1970 recipient of the American Psychological Association's Richardson Creativity Award, established by the Richardson Foundation in 1965. The award is given for "the most outstanding contribution during the preceding year or recent years toward improving creative and innovative talents or developing or utilizing such talents." This year's winner is Calvin W. Taylor. The recipient receives a citation and a check for five thousand dollars. Dr Taylor's citation reads: "For his initiative in organizing conferences to stimulate research in the identification of creative scientific talent; for his editorial skill in bringing together diverse contributions of himself and others to form coherent volumes that have channeled research efforts by focusing on such important problems as the climate for creativity and the development of scientific creativity; and for his own original research on significant biographical factors in the personal and professional development of creative scientists." Anne Roe: Richardson Creativity Award 1968.

Acknowledges the 1968 recipient of the Richardson Creativity Award. The American Psychological Association's (APA) announced that Anne Roe is this year's Richardson award winner. The award was established by the Richardson Foundation in 1965. The Citation notes Roe's early and imaginative application of biographical study, personality assessment, and clinical evaluation of eminent and creative scientists in different fields, including physics, biology, and behavioral science. Roe has held many elected and appointed positions in the APA and has received the American Personnel and Guidance Association's Honorable Mention for Outstanding Research as coauthor of The Origin of Interests, 1966; the National Vocational Guidance Association's Lifetime Career Award, 1967; and the Harvard Graduate School of Education Association Award, 1967. Harry F. Harlow: American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award.

Recognizes receipt of the American Psychological Foundation Gold Medal Award. Harry F. Harlow is this year's recipient of the Gold Medal Award. The accompanying article notes that Dr. Harlow has built a distinguished scientific career upon the study of basic psychological phenomena that are simultaneously of great scientific interest and great social importance. It is fair to say that, while he has been concerned with learning and behavior changes accompanying maturation from infancy to adulthood, and while he has shown some interest in therapeutic communities, a larger share of his attention has been given to affective behavior--especially to the affective relations between parents and offspring and to the pathologies of these relations. The American Psychological Association Foundation presents its Gold Medal Award to a senior American psychologist in recognition of a distinguished and long-continued record of scientific and scholarly accomplishment. Distinguished Professional Contribution Award for 1972.

The first Award for Distinguished Professional Contribution was presented to Carl Rogers at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Honolulu on September 2, 1972. Allport, Heinrich Kluver, Karl M. Dallenbach, Floyd H. Allport, Henry A. Murray, Sidney L. Pressey, and B. F. Skinner. The 1972 award recipient is Gardner Murphy. Murphy is well known to several generations of psychologists through his Historical Introduction to Modern Psychology, his ground-breaking Experimental Social Psychology, and his Personality: A Bio-Social Approach to Origins and Structure. Theodore M. Newcomb: Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award.

Recognizes the receipt of the American Psychological Association's 1976 Distinguished Scientific Contribution Award by Theodore M. Newcomb. The award citation reads: "For his leadership in social psychology which, under his impact, grew from an insignificant subarea of psychology to a field of major importance. Through his diverse contributions he enriched our theoretical and empirical understanding of man's interaction with the social environment. He opened up new fields of inquiry and fostered novel approaches to the study of the relationship of personality and culture. His work led the way to a greater interdisciplinary involvement of social psychology, especially with sociology and anthropology, not only on the conceptual level, but also in the application of interdisciplinary conceptions to pressing social problems."
