The Science of Adhesive Bonding and its Transfer to Technology

Author's Note

This article is based, in part, on a lecture given by the author on the occasion of his receipt of The Adhesion Society Award for Excellence in Adhesion Science, Sponsored by 3M at the Society's 14th Annual Meeting in Clearwater, Florida, U.S.A., February 1991. The author takes this opportunity to thank the Adhesion Society for the award and the 3M Corporation for its sponsorship. It is an honor to receive such a tribute from a society and a corporation that have done so much to advance the science and technology of adhesive bonding.     

The referencing of prior art documents in European patents and applications

This paper explains the nature, origin and extent of the various documents and other prior art that may be cited in the course of the procedure from the filing of an EP patent application, through the search report and ‘A’ publication stages, the examination stage, and the eventual grant or refusal. The implications of the much weaker “duty of candour” in the European system of granting a bundle of national patents, compared with the US system, are described.

Distinguished scientific award for the applications of psychology.

The Distinguished Scientific Award for the Applications of Psychology is presented to a person who has made distinguished theoretical or empirical advances leading to the understanding or amelioration of important practical problems. This year's winner is Joseph V. Brady. Brady is recognized for sustained innovative and insightful contributions to behavioral pharmacology, behavioral physiology, and behavioral medicine. In addition, his work has encompassed basic neuroanatomy and endocrinology, as well as the integrative activity of behavior in simulated space environments. Announces that the 1988 recipient of the CPA award for Distinguished Contributions to Psychology as a Science is Dr. Philip Bryden, Professor of Psychology at the University of Waterloo. One of Dr. Bryden's major contributions was to tackle the difficult issue of reliability of measures and to design and execute careful and meticulous experiments; experiments that are in large part responsible for the widespread acceptance of this technique as a tool in cognitive psychology and neuropsychology.
