Distinguished Scientific Awards for an Early Career Contribution to Psychology.

The Early Career Awards recognize the large number of excellent young psychologists. Recipients of this award may not have held a PhD for more than nine years. The areas considered in 1991 were animal learning and behavior, developmental, and personality. The winners for 1991 were Kent C. Berridge, Susan A. Gelman, and Randy J. Larsen. The development and maturation of humanitarian psychology.

Humanitarian psychological support as an organized field is relatively young. Pioneers in the field were involved primarily in providing psychological support to refugees and internally displaced persons in conflict and nonconflict situations. This article describes basic principles for the design of psychological support programs and interventions. The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) began a psychological support program in 1991. The IFRC chose psychological first aid as its model for implementation in developing countries. Psychological first aid fits all the principles for psychological support program design and is adapted to individual communities. The first generation of psychological support programs differed dramatically depending on the countries in which they were developed. A second generation of psychological support programs evolved in response to the earthquake/tsunami of December 26, 2004. The Inter-Agency Standing Committee international guidelines consolidated the advances of second-generation programs and provided a clear indication of the wide acceptance of the importance of psychological support. A glimpse is provided of the third generation of psychological support programs, and an admonition is made for a more empirical evaluation of the effectiveness of interventions. Frontolimbic Response to Negative Feedback in Clinical Depression.

Functional neuroimaging suggests that limbic regions of the medial frontal cortex may be abnormally active in individuals with depression. These regions, including the anterior cingulate cortex, are engaged in both action regulation, such as monitoring errors and conflict, and affect regulation, such as responding to pain. The authors examined whether clinically depressed subjects would show abnormal sensitivity of frontolimbic networks as they evaluated negative feedback. Depressed subjects and matched control subjects performed a video game in the laboratory as a 256-channel EEG was recorded. Speed of performance on each trial was graded with a feedback signal of A, C, or F. By 350 ms after the feedback signal, depressed subjects showed a larger medial frontal negativity for all feedback compared with control subjects with a particularly striking response to the F grade. This response was strongest for moderately depressed subjects and was attenuated for subjects who were more severely depressed. Localization analyses suggested that negative feedback engaged sources in the anterior cingulate and insular cortices. These results suggest that moderate depression may sensitize limbic networks to respond strongly to aversive events. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

小儿的心理状态与成人有着明显的差异，在其住院和接受医疗期间可出现严重的心理反应，导致植物神经功能紊乱，使机体低抗力下降，而削弱机体对麻药的耐受力，不利于麻醉诱导及管理，而且还会造成小儿的精神创伤。文章初步探讨了小儿麻醉心理学的有关问题。     

黄河下游滩区居民心理研究的设计及信息获取

特殊的自然环境，必将塑造滩区居民特有的心理状况，进而影响滩区社会经济的发展。黄河下游滩区居民心理研究从研究对象、技术路线与方法、数据来源等方面进行了调查设计；整群随机抽取河南、山东2个省6个县22个村作为调查对象，调查问卷分为“搬迁居民卷”和“未搬迁居民卷”，涉及题项分另？为82个和91个；采取入户调查填写问卷、座谈、个案访谈等方式，共获得相关资料1021份。     

Color changes in cyanosis and the significance of congenital dichromasy and lighting

There are anecdotal reports of color vision deficient medical practitioners (particularly deuteranopes) having difficulty in recognizing cyanosis. An understanding of the color changes in oxygenated blood has led to a better understanding of the lighting needs for hospitals. Using the same database, this article investigates the propensity for color vision deficient observers to make mistakes with cyanotic patients. The possibilities for helping the observer with appropriate color of lighting are considered. The spectral reflectances of blood at varying oxygenation levels previously reported were used 7 ; 8 to calculate chromaticity and lightness. The direction of the chromaticity change was compared with the protanopic and deuteranopic confusion lines. An attempt was made to identify sources that enhanced color changes for the color deficient. The color change of blood oxygenation is closely aligned with the confusion lines of congenital dichromats (particularly protanopia) showing the potential for difficulty in making this decision. No source could be demonstrated to solve the problem or even reduce it significantly. © 2007 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Col Res Appl, 32, 428–432, 2007
