Psychology has had a long history of collaboration with the medical profession. This collaboration has been greatly enhanced over the past decade or more as an increasing number of psychologists have become successful in applying the science and practice of psychology to the problems of health and illness. This article reviews and summarizes salient aspects of professional issues in practice that contribute to successful collaboration with physicians in primary and tertiary ambulatory health care settings. The relevance of attachment theory and research for practice has become increasingly clear. The authors describe a series of studies with 3 aims: (a) to validate measures of attachment for use by clinicians with adolescents and adults, (b) to examine the relation between attachment and personality pathology, and (c) to ascertain whether factor analysis can recover dimensions of attachment reflecting both interpersonal and narrative style. In 3 studies, experienced clinicians provided psychometric data using 1 of 4 attachment questionnaires (2 adolescent and 2 adult samples). Attachment dimensions predicted both personality pathology and developmental experiences in predictable ways. Factor analysis identified 4 dimensions that replicated across adolescent and adult samples on the basis of a combination of interpersonal and narrative indicators: secure, dismissing, preoccupied, and incoherent/disorganized. Reviews the book, Handbook of psychotherapy supervision by C. Edward Watkins Jr. (see record 1997-08923-000). This book offers a forum for some of the most influential thinkers of our time to discuss what is probably the most critical aspect of learning how to become a therapist: clinical supervision. The book is well organized, comprehensive, and informative. In it, the elusive nature of teaching how to conduct psychotherapy is explored and clarified from a variety of perspectives and across myriad contexts. Overall, the book provides a wealth of information in an organized and readable fashion. Nonetheless, the topics explored include some areas that were not covered adequately. For example, the book would have been further enhanced had the subject of supervisory failures been given more attention, as we know that learning from past errors often provides the most valuable teaching opportunities. Despite a few minor criticisms, the book serves as a wonderful reference for practitioners, students, and teachers of psychotherapy. While extremely useful for the beginning supervisor, the book is also a valuable resource for seasoned supervisors who wish to expand or challenge their ways of thinking about supervision. This editorial notes that this issue of the Journal appears under a changed title, a change that reflects more accurately the field of psychology with which the Journal is concerned--clinical psychology--and at the same time augurs a more contemporary interpretation of that field. In 1975 I enjoyed a full-time faculty position at the New Jersey Medical School. I held a joint appointment in the Departments of Psychiatry and Obstetrics/Gynecology and was involved in the development of the Human Sexuality Program. In addition to my duties at the Medical School, I conducted a small, part-time private practice, seeing patients in my office at the Medical School and occasionally borrowing a friend's office in a suburban town. This arrangement is probably familiar to many neophyte practitioners. Through my work in the Human Sexuality Program of the New Jersey Medical School, I was in charge of conducting weekend "Sexual Attitude Reassessment Seminars." At the suggestion of a senior psychologist, I invited a well-known New Jersey psychologist and the then-acting Dean of the Organizing Council for the College of Professional Psychology, a forerunner of the Graduate School of Applied and Professional Psychology at Rutgers, as a guest. We felt that his presence would be good publicity for our program. It was during this weekend that I was first approached by him with an offer to buy his practice. At the time of the purchase offer, I knew of no other psychologist who had bought a private practice. For the young psychologist genuinely interested in developing a private practice, I would recommend seeking a seller. The choice of the seller, of course, is most important.
