A Variational Solution for Downdrag Force Analysis of Pile Groups

This article presents a variational approach for the analysis of downdrag forces of pile groups undergoing soil downward movement. The theoretical load‐transfer curves are employed to describe the soil load‐displacement relationship. A soil with stiffness varying with depth and with stiffer end‐bearing stratum at the pile toe can be easily treated using the present method. The validity of the present method is demonstrated through comparison with existing theoretical solutions and field measurements.     

Review of Psychoanalytic participation: Action, interaction, and integration.

Reviews the book, Psychoanalytic participation: Action, interaction, and integration by Kenneth A. Frank (see record 1999-04095-000). Frank's book is an extremely timely, well-written, and scholarly book that integrates the recent developments within the two-person, relational perspective in contemporary psychoanalysis with an active, pragmatic approach that includes many cognitive and behavioral technical innovations. This book initially appears to be directed toward a psychoanalytic audience that is on the cusp of appreciating an expanding repertoire of active, cognitive, and behavioral approaches. However, Frank's presentation is so comprehensive and thoughtful that the book is also an excellent text for nonpsychoanalytic therapists (and students) to develop an understanding of the contemporary two-person, relational approaches to psychotherapy. Frank presents a deeply integrative approach that appears to be guided by a particular set of values that emphasize both a commitment to a pragmatic approach of helping patients reach their life goals and the therapist's self-understanding of the complexity, the interpersonal impact, and the meaning of all therapeutic events and interventions on both participants. This is an excellent book either for the psychoanalytic therapist who is ready to be more active and engaged with patients or for the cognitive and behavioral therapist who is ready to integrate a more dynamic, two-person approach to the transference-countertransference relationship. An exploratory model of knowledge flow barriers within healthcare organizations

Healthcare today is mainly knowledge-based and the diffusion of medical knowledge is imperative for proper treatment of patients. Our study of the industry explored barriers to knowledge flow using a Cultural Historical Activity Theory framework. Our work was exploratory and qualitative in nature, and consisted of three phases: in-depth interviews to explore medical knowledge flow barriers resulting in a model; a case study using a survey approach to test and modify the model; and a Delphi study to validate the generalizability of the model.

The coordinating model of the ganga basin

A scheme of model studies required to analyse a complex large scale system through decomposition approach is outlined. First, the total system is proposed to be modelled to identify interlinkages of the subsystems. Then the subsystems are analysed in detail to develop response functions. Finally the optimal system functioning is obtained by modelling the entire system in terms of response functions of the components. A linear programming model is developed for modelling the total system to identify the interlinkages. Its application is demonstrated in the Greater Ganga Basin using published data. Trade-off is developed between power generation and irrigated area in various seasons. A list of symbols is given at the end of the paper.

A New Approach for Vehicle Lateral Velocity and Yaw Rate Control with Uncertainty

In order to attain excellent stability and maneuverability to ensure safety and ride‐comfort, the lateral velocity and yaw rate of a vehicle are expected to be controlled at any desired values simultaneously. A basic manipulation model of a vehicle with two degrees of freedom which requires two independent control inputs (front and rear steering angle) is constructed. In this model, we consider the mass and the moment of inertia of the vehicle are the uncertain parameters which are (possibly) fast‐varying. However, no further information, except that the uncertainties are bounded, is assumed. Furthermore, the bound is unknown. An adaptive robust control methodology based on the Udwadia and Kalaba approach which guarantees uniform boundedness and uniform ultimate boundedness is proposed to drive the system to follow the pre‐specified constraints approximately. The adaptive law is of leakage type which can adjust itself based on the tracking error. The numerical simulation results conducted by MATLAB demonstrate the ease and effectiveness of implementation.

Systems,habitats or places: evaluating the potential role of landscape character assessment in operationalising the ecosystem approach

A key challenge for research and practice is to understand how the ecosystem approach can be rolled out in spatial planning, management and decision-making. Any framework used to apply the ecosystem approach needs to not only be environmentally coherent but also socially meaningful. Drawing on semi-structured interviews and case studies, this paper examines the potential role of one place-based approach, landscape character assessment, as a medium to ensure socio-ecological relevance in operationalising the ecosystem approach. Our findings show that although place-based approaches have value as frameworks for distilling the ecosystem approach into a manageable form, their ecological relevance is a subject of debate. However, the potential relationship between landscape character, function and ecosystem services presented a powerful pathway for operationalising the ecosystem approach. The ecosystem approach may, in turn, complement landscape character assessment by providing a framework for exploring the functional dimension of landscape condition.
