Atmospheric-pressure dielectric barrier discharge generation by a full-bridge flying capacitor multilevel inverter

A new configuration of a resonant full-bridge flying capacitor multicell inverter has been designed and constructed with the aim of achieving an extended output voltage frequency range with low harmonic distortion and reduced semiconductor commutation losses. This configuration was tested as a power supply for two different coaxial dielectric barrier discharge reactors, one of them employed for electric characterization and the other one for inorganic compound elimination in an aqueous solution. Two different gas mixtures, 90% Ar–10% O_2 and80% Ar–20% O_2, were individually supplied during the experiments; the results showed a highefficiency removal of meta-cresol(m-cresol) to the order of 98%, which was obtained by adding more oxygen to the plasma gas mixture.

Highly polarized luminescence from an AIEE-active luminescent liquid crystalline film

Luminescent liquid crystals (LLCs) have attracted significant interest for organic optoelectronic applications, especially for the generation of linear polarized light. Here, a novel LLC molecule, 2-(4-(nonanealkoxy)phenyl)-3-(4-formamidephenyl)-acrylonitrile (CN-NPFA), is reported, which shows strong fluorescence in the solid state due to the aggregation-induced enhanced emission (AIEE) effect. Moreover, a well-aligned liquid crystalline film using AIEE-active molecules, is obtained using an in-plane electric field with an alignment layer. It exhibits highly polarized luminescence (ρ = 0.74) with a high fluorescence quantum yield. The device is both cheap and easy to fabricate, and has the potential to be used in practical electro-optic applications.     

Development of an energy-saving method of resistance projection welding of multilayer welded structures

A highly efficient energy-saving method of resistance projection welding of 3–4 components in a single cycle is described. The method is based on the automatically regulated gradual introduction of electric energy into the zone between the electrodes.     

Steeling ourselves for the electric vehicle revolution

Abstract

The automotive industry is changing with ever increasing speed. The current economic and environmental pressures mean that the vehicles of tomorrow will be very different to those we drive today. As new technologies are developed to enable these changes, the materials industry must respond quickly to ensure that they are both manufacturable and cost effective, as well as deliver the performance required to drive the industry forward. This article aims to identify the key technology developments, the challenges that they face and how Tata Steel is helping to overcome them.     

Model study of a fuel cell range extender for a neighborhood electric vehicle (NEV)

Fuel cell systems have the potential to provide high-efficiency, low-cost power for Neighborhood Electric Vehicles (NEVs). Model results are presented examining the utility of placing a hydrogen PEM fuel cell on-board a Miles Electric ZX40ST work truck NEV as an “after-market add-on” range extender to the existing battery electric drive train, thereby creating a NEVx. Through the development and use of the Sandia-Miles-Altergy Range Test (SMART) model, we have examined the potential for a number of PEM fuel cell stack systems (with varying output power), combined with various hydrogen storage and electrical storage system configurations to achieve the desired range extension for a single 8-h work shift. Furthermore, we have evaluated the “well-to-wheels” (WTW) and greenhouse gas (GHG) reductions, and assessed the costs (both capital and O&M) for the different NEVx configurations and operating profiles.
