This article provides a commentary on the article by Cepeda and Davenport (2006; see record 2006-05485-001) that proposes an integration of solution-focused and person-centered therapy. The commonalities of each approach are highlighted as well as the differences. The primary argument of the article is that the process orientation of person-centered therapy may conflict with the goals of solution-focused therapy. Markers for identifying when each approach might be appropriate are identified and the implications for the therapeutic alliance of combining the two approaches are discussed. Objective: Assess the effects of videoconferencing-based counseling on the psychosocial functioning of rural teenagers with epilepsy. Setting: University and rural communities. Participants: Twenty-two teenagers with epilepsy and their parents. Interventions: Six sessions of home-based video counseling, home-based speakerphone counseling, or office-based counseling. Main Outcome Measures: Problem severity and frequency, Social Skills Rating System, modified Working Alliance Inventory, and treatment adherence. Results: Teenagers and parents reported significant reductions in both problem severity and frequency across all 3 conditions from pre- to post-6th session to the 6-month follow-up. Parents reported significant increases in prosocial behaviors from pre- to post-6th session to follow-up. In contrast, both parents and teachers reported no change in problem behaviors over time. No differences in adherence were found across the 3 modalities. Overall therapeutic alliance was high but varied as a function of family member and treatment. Reviews the book, Meeting Freud's family by Paul Roazen (see record 1993-99040-000). Over the years, Roazen has built a reputation as an expert on Freud. This is not a view to which many Freud scholars would be inclined to subscribe, but their opinions do not reach the general educated public to any appreciable extent. For most people, anything written about Freud that is thought to carry authority is considered informed comment on the psychoanalytic discipline itself. Roazen's new book is likely to be seized on for further enlightenment and, in view of its title, for inside information. "This book," he tells us, "is an attempt to re-create--based on my understanding of the place of psychoanalysis in intellectual history--the world of Freud's family life" (p. 16). What he wants to report is "the whole ambience surrounding these, people, and how their lives said something special about Freud" (p. 16). He wants to do this on the basis of personal interviews. The family Roazen met were two of Freud's daughters, Anna Freud (in 1965) and Mathilda (Hollitscher) Freud (1966), and one son, Oliver Freud (1966). Melvin Lansky's riveting book is about fathers who cannot find their way in the world of either love or work, but are driven to self-destructive bonds with others by problems with their "paternal imago." This book addresses the central role of the affect of shame, and the defenses against experiencing it, leading to varieties of "impulsive" symptom formation, disturbing the capacity for sustaining work or love relationships and constantly threatening breakdown of fragile self-esteem. Symptoms are viewed as failed efforts to escape shame through rage and to rigidly regulate optimal distance in family relationships. The attempt throughout is to meld a variety of psychoanalytic perspectives with family systems perspectives. The book is organized into several sections, beginning with an overview entitled Symptom, System and Personality in Fathers Who Fail, followed by The Paternal Imago. Next comes Defenses Against Shame: Narcissistic Equilibrium in the Family System, and then a section on shame and symptom formation. A section entitled Treatment Difficulties completes the book. Changes in a sense of obligation to assist, support, and respect the family were examined among an ethnically diverse group of 745 American individuals as they began to move from secondary school into young adulthood. A sense of family obligation increased for all young adults, with slight variations according to ethnic and financial backgrounds. Young adults from Filipino and Latin American families reported the strongest sense of familial duty during young adulthood, which partially explained their tendency to live with and contribute financially to their families. The implications of family obligation for employment and educational persistence depended on age and academic performance in high school.
