Review of Comprehensive Handbook of Psychotherapy: Vol. 1. Psychodynamic/Object Relations.

This initial volume is an introduction to a four-volume work. The text consists of 25 chapters, organized into six different sections. The first three sections address psychotherapy for three different age stratifications: children, adolescents, and adults. Sections IV and V address couples and family therapy, and group therapy, respectively. The closing section (VI) addresses "special topics," which turn out to include group interventions in therapeutic communities, cardiac patients, and ethnic and gender topics, as these have a bearing on transference in psychotherapy. This is followed by a closing summary of the entire volume by the editor. The reviewer recommends this volume to psychotherapists of all persuasions, who are interested in expanding their horizons and perhaps broadening the applicability of their other techniques and formulations to problems of human motivation, conflict and pathology. Family obligation and the transition to young adulthood.

Changes in a sense of obligation to assist, support, and respect the family were examined among an ethnically diverse group of 745 American individuals as they began to move from secondary school into young adulthood. A sense of family obligation increased for all young adults, with slight variations according to ethnic and financial backgrounds. Young adults from Filipino and Latin American families reported the strongest sense of familial duty during young adulthood, which partially explained their tendency to live with and contribute financially to their families. The implications of family obligation for employment and educational persistence depended on age and academic performance in high school. Review of Family Therapy: An Introduction to Theory and Technique (2nd ed).

Reviews the book, Family Therapy: An Introduction to Theory and Technique (2nd ed.) edited by Gerald D. Erickson and Terrence P. Hogan ( 1981). The second edition of Family Therapy is a significant and worthwhile improvement on the 1972 edition and it adequately reflects the rate of growth in the field of family therapy over the past decade. Erickson and Hogan have included articles which are classics in the field as well as papers critical to an appreciation of the rapid growth of techniques and research in family therapy. Almost 75% of the articles are new to this 1981 edition of Family Therapy. While almost all of the book is comprised of well selected articles which have previously been published, many are recent publications which retain their timeliness, and one is an original paper by Diane Pancoast on therapeutic interventions with community helping networks. The stated goal of the book is the selection of those major papers which represent several broad areas in family therapy. The book is successful in that regard. Alzheimer's Rural Care Healthline: Linking Rural Caregivers to Cognitive-Behavioral Intervention for Depression.

Objective: To describe the challenges faced by rural caregivers in providing assistance to older family members with Alzheimer's disease and closely related conditions. Procedure: Preliminary focus group findings from a new grant initiative, Alzheimer's Rural Care Healthline, that assesses the efficacy of telephone-based cognitive- behavioral intervention for rural dementia caregivers. Groups identified specific caregiver educational and skills-training requirements and best methods for soliciting referrals from rural health providers, community elder care agencies, and churches. Results: Trust emerged as an overarching theme, along with family and community privacy issues and the stigma associated with dementia. Conclusions: Future studies should consider the educational priorities, technological requirements, and sociocultural context of rural caregivers in designing telehealth-based interventions, including issues of privacy, stigma, and trust. Recognition of these factors may lead to increased acceptability, frequency of use, and sustainability of rural telehealth programs. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

An initial look at the outcomes for dynamic play therapy.

Recent reviews of play therapy have identified that inclusion of parents in the intervention improves outcomes. This article presents an initial study of the changes in problem behavior when children and their families are provided dynamic play therapy. Dynamic play therapy is a family intervention developed by the author in which families are helped to develop collaborative play together using art, drama, movement, storytelling, and video making. Results suggest that child behavior does improve, that parents report the development of a positive therapeutic alliance with the therapist, and that this alliance is associated with outcome. This study used an action research approach and was conducted in an ongoing child guidance clinic. Discussion of the limits and merits of this approach is presented. The efficacy of structural ecosystems therapy with drug-abusing/dependent African American and Hispanic American adolescents.

Many family therapies for adolescent drug use include ecological interventions. The purpose of this randomized clinical trial was to establish whether ecological interventions contribute to the impact of family therapy above and beyond the contributions of family process-only interventions. A family-based ecological approach, structural ecosystems therapy (SET), was compared with family process-only condition (FAM) and community services control (CS). One hundred ninety substance-abusing or dependent African American and Hispanic adolescents were randomized to SET, FAM, or CS. Follow-up assessments were conducted at 3, 6, 12, and 18 months postrandomization. SET was significantly more efficacious than FAM and CS in reducing adolescent drug use. However, these improvements were limited to Hispanic adolescents. The study demonstrates the importance of investigating changes in adolescent drug use as a result of treatment condition across more than 1 racial/ethnic group. Unraveling the role of forgiveness in family relationships.

Testing the idea that the process of forgiveness is intrinsically different across diverse relationships, this study examined the role of forgiveness in different family relationships. In 2 laboratory sessions 1 year apart, 114 families (each including 2 parents and 1 child) completed a new measure of family forgiveness and many individual-level, relationship-level, and family-level variables that have been previously linked with forgiveness. After validating the measure of family forgiveness in cross-sectional analyses, investigators performed longitudinal analyses to examine the role of forgiveness in each family relationship over the 1-year interval. Results indicated many important positive consequences of forgiveness on individual traits, aspects of each family relationship, and general family environment. However, there were also important asymmetries in associates of forgiveness across parent-child and parent-parent relationships, demonstrating the relationship-bound nature of forgiveness.
