The list of "Accredited Doctoral Programs in Professional Psychology: 2003" (American Psychologist, 2003, Vol. 58, No. 12, pp. 1067-1080) contained an error. On page 1074, the University of Southern California is incorrectly identified (Footnote 7) as no longer admitting students to its doctoral program in clinical psychology. This is not the case. However, the University of Southern California is no longer admitting students to its doctoral program in counseling psychology (listed on page 1078), and the program is being phased out. It reflects all committee decisions through June 29, 2003. Do psychology students view their training programs as doing enough to appropriately identify, accommodate, and possibly dismiss students who manifest significant impairment? This study reports the general findings of an exploratory survey distributed to clinical psychology graduate students. Overall, students viewed impairment as a highly sensitive and inadequately addressed issue. Students commonly reported frustration with and concern for impaired colleagues. A few respondents indicated that the terms impaired and problem student were insensitive and that greater attention needed to be given to "impaired" training contexts. The program at Lehigh University has been very successful in producing a high percentage of students (42% of all graduates) who have entered academic careers as trainers of school psychologists. This article presents a conceptual model for the three variables that are considered as critical components of why students select an academic career--mentoring, modeling, and money. Results of a survey of the program alumni at Lehigh University are presented. Outcomes of the survey showed significant and substantial differences in the perceptions of the mentoring and modeling process by students who are in academic versus nonacademic careers. Abstract: This paper describes the research funded by the New Jersey Department of Transportation to develop an automated technology to monitor segregation during construction of hot-mix asphalt concrete pavements. A Laser-based system was used to measure surface texture and to detect segregation. Two segregated test sections and a control test section were tested to evaluate the applicability of Laser texture method to detect and quantify segregation. Laser texture data were gathered from all three sections. Ratios of texture in segregated areas to that in nonsegregated areas were set as the basis for detection of different levels of segregation. By combining the level of segregation and extent of segregation, an AREA index was developed to determine the acceptability of a pavement section. Based on AREA index, pay adjustment factors were proposed to reduce the payment to account for loss of pavement life due to segregation. Further remedial actions were proposed to correct segregated pavement sections with acceptable AREA index. Based on the above concepts, Windows-based computer program NJTxtr was developed to detect and quantify segregation. This computer program uses the Laser-equipment-collected pavement texture data and determines whether the pavement section is acceptable or unacceptable based on the level of segregation within a pavement section, and provides bonus or penalties to the contractor. The paper describes a novel technology using laser and associated software for construction quality control of asphalt concrete pavements. The proposed methodology was applied to detect segregation in an interstate highway section in New Jersey, and this section was repaved based on visual observation and recommendation from this study.  相似文献

Induction of decision trees is one of the most successful approaches to supervised machine learning. Branching programs are a generalization of decision trees and, by the boosting analysis, exponentially more efficiently learnable than decision trees. However, this advantage has not been seen to materialize in experiments. Decision trees are easy to simplify using pruning. Reduced error pruning is one of the simplest decision tree pruning algorithms. For branching programs no pruning algorithms are known. In this paper we prove that reduced error pruning of branching programs is infeasible. Finding the optimal pruning of a branching program with respect to a set of pruning examples that is separate from the set of training examples is NP-complete. Because of this intractability result, we have to consider approximating reduced error pruning. Unfortunately, it turns out that even finding an approximate solution of arbitrary accuracy is computationally infeasible. In particular, reduced error pruning of branching programs is APX-hard. Our experiments show that, despite the negative theoretical results, heuristic pruning of branching programs can reduce their size without significantly altering the accuracy.  相似文献

This paper describes a set of tools that enables developers to log and analyze the run-time behavior of distributed control systems. A feature of the tools is that they can be applied to distributed systems. The logging tools enable developers to instrument C or C++ programs so that data indicating state changes can be logged automatically in a variety of formats. In particular, run-time data from distributed systems can be synchronized into a single relational database. Tools are also provided for visualizing the logged data. Analysis to verify correct program behavior is done using a new interval logic that is described in this paper. The logic enables system engineers to express temporal specifications for the autonomous control program that are then checked against the logged data. The data logging, visualization, and interval logic analysis tools are all fully implemented. Results are given from a NASA distributed autonomous control system application.  相似文献

This paper illustrates extensively the theoretical properties, the implementation issues, and the programming style underlying finitary programs. They are a class of normal logic programs whose consequences under the stable model semantics can be effectively computed, despite the fact that finitary programs admit function symbols (hence infinite domains) and recursion. From a theoretical point of view, finitary programs are interesting because they enjoy properties that are extremely unusual for a nonmonotonic formalism, such as compactness. From the application point of view, the theory of finitary programs shows how the existing technology for answer set programming can be extended from problem solving below the second level of the polynomial hierarchy to all semidecidable problems. Moreover, finitary programs allow a more natural encoding of recursive data structures and may increase the performance of credulous reasoners.  相似文献

Abstract

Technological changes are occurring rapidly. As one result, students entering college are bringing very disparate computer skills and attitudes. Some students are reluctant to embrace new technologies; others demand electronic resources for all assignments. By considering the computer access and Internet resources available to elementary school students today, we can only imagine what our users of tomorrow will expect from libraries. Although college students may arrive at our libraries with increased computer skills, their knowledge of electronic information may be lacking. Definitions of information literacy and an overview of information literacy skills are outlined. The Digital Information Literacy program at The University of Texas at Austin, as well as the technological environment and facilities at the institution, serve as a case study for integrating information literacy skills into traditional services and partnerships.  相似文献

Fishes typically occupy a species-specific temperature range, with their occupied depth being related to the lake’s temperature profile. When a fish’s preferred temperature range coincides with the thermocline, the location of their preferred thermal habitat is influenced by the rise and fall of internal waves, leading to possible changes in fish depth. These internal waves are common in large, stratified lakes, yet we do not know how they affect the spatial distribution and behavior of freshwater fishes. We conducted nighttime hydroacoustic surveys in a large, deep embayment of a large thermally stratified lake to observe whether pelagic fish respond to vertical oscillations of the thermocline caused by internal waves. The coldwater pelagic fish in our study (primarily cisco, Coregonus artedi) typically occupied a narrow vertical band approximately 5–8 m thick and temperatures between 10.8 ± 0.8–13.6 ± 1.6 °C (fishes sized 106–500 mm), just below the thermocline (centered around 15–17 °C). Importantly, the upper bound of fish depth varied in response to vertical thermocline movements associated with internal waves, suggesting fish respond to changes in their physical environment on timescales commensurate with basin-scale internal wave periods (hours to days), to remain within their preferred thermal habitat. Dissolved-oxygen levels were typically above avoidance thresholds of these fish, thus not likely exerting a strong influence on fish location. Our findings emphasize the need to account for internal waves when designing hydroacoustic and netting surveys, as thermocline movements can influence where fish are located.  相似文献

A multi-period discrete facility location problem is introduced for a risk neutral strategy with uncertainty in the costs and some of the requirements along the planning horizon. A compact 0–1 formulation for the Deterministic Equivalent Model of the problem under two alternative strategies for the location decisions is presented. Furthermore, a new algorithmic matheuristic, Fix-and-Relax-Coordination, is introduced. This solution scheme is based on a specialization of the Branch-and-Fix Coordination methodology, which exploits the Nonanticipativity Constraints and uses the Twin Node Family concept. The results of an extensive computational experience allow to compare the alternative modeling strategies and assess the effectiveness of the proposed approach versus the plain use of a state-of-the-art MIP solver.  相似文献
