Green seeds are used as a grading factor in estimating chlorophyll in canola and rapeseed in the Canadian and U.S.A. grading
systems. This work examines the effect that sampling and perception have on the estimation of green seeds as well as the effect
that sampling has on the determination of chlorophyll. Individual seed analysis indicated that in order to be considered as
green, seeds needed to contain between 200 and 400 mg/kg chlorophyll. Variation due to binomial sampling played a predominant
role in the error in determining the green seed levels in canola. Sampling of large numbers of seeds, as in the loading of
export shipments, reduced the error. Binomial sampling also contributed to the error in chlorophyll determination even with
sample sizes as large as 500. Differences in perception of green also were noted between individuals with coefficients of
variation as high as 50% at the 1% green seed level. The combination of perception error and sampling error may result in
samples of 1,000 seeds drawn from a mass with 2% green seeds having green seed counts ranging from 0.96 to 3.04%, 19 times

How rapidly does boundary extension occur? Across experiments, trials included a 3-scene sequence (325 ms/picture), masked interval, and repetition of 1 scene. The repetition was the same view or differed (more close-up or wide angle). Observers rated the repetition as same as, closer than, or more wide angle than the original view on a 5-point scale. Masked intervals were 100, 250, 625, or 1,000 ms in Experiment 1 and 42, 100, or 250 ms in Experiments 2 and 3. Boundary extension occurred in all cases: Identical views were rated as too \"close-up,\" and distractor views elicited the rating asymmetry typical of boundary extension (wider angle distractors were rated as being more similar to the original than were closer up distractors). Most important, boundary extension was evident when only a 42-ms mask separated the original and test views. Experiments 1 and 3 included conditions eliciting a gaze shift prior to the rating test; this did not eliminate boundary extension. Results show that boundary extension is available soon enough and is robust enough to play an on-line role in view integration, perhaps supporting incorporation of views within a larger spatial framework. Taylor [Taylor, D.H., 1964. Drivers' galvanic skin response and the risk of accident. Ergonomics 7, 439-451] argued that drivers attempt to maintain a constant level of anxiety when driving which Wilde [Wilde, G.J.S., 1982. The theory of risk homeostasis: implications for safety and health. Risk Anal. 2, 209-225] interpreted to be coupled to subjective estimates of the probability of collision. This theoretical paper argues that what drivers attempt to maintain is a level of task difficulty. Naatanen and Summala [Naatanen, R., Summala, H., 1976. Road User Behaviour and Traffic Accidents. North Holland/Elsevier, Amsterdam, New York] similarly rejected the concept of statistical risk as a determinant of driver behaviour, but in so doing fell back on the learning process to generate a largely automatised selection of appropriate safety margins. However it is argued here that driver behaviour cannot be acquired and executed principally in such S-R terms. The concept of task difficulty is elaborated within the framework of the task-capability interface (TCI) model, which describes the dynamic interaction between the determinants of task demand and driver capability. It is this interaction which produces different levels of task difficulty. Implications of the model are discussed regarding variation in performance, resource allocation, hierarchical decision-making and the interdependence of demand and capability. Task difficulty homeostasis is proposed as a key sub-goal in driving and speed choice is argued to be the primary solution to the problem of keeping task difficulty within selected boundaries. The relationship between task difficulty and mental workload and calibration is clarified. Evidence is cited in support of the TCI model, which clearly distinguishes task difficulty from estimates of statistical risk. However, contrary to expectation, ratings of perceived risk depart from ratings of statistical risk but track difficulty ratings almost perfectly. It now appears that feelings of risk may inform driver decision making, as Taylor originally suggested, but not in terms of risk of collision, but rather in terms of task difficulty. The most familiar emotional signals consist of faces, voices, and whole-body expressions, but so far research on emotions expressed by the whole body is sparse. The authors investigated recognition of whole-body expressions of emotion in three experiments. In the first experiment, participants performed a body expression-matching task. Results indicate good recognition of all emotions, with fear being the hardest to recognize. In the second experiment, two alternative forced choice categorizations of the facial expression of a compound face-body stimulus were strongly influenced by the bodily expression. This effect was a function of the ambiguity of the facial expression. In the third experiment, recognition of emotional tone of voice was similarly influenced by task irrelevant emotional body expressions. Taken together, the findings illustrate the importance of emotional whole-body expressions in communication either when viewed on their own or, as is often the case in realistic circumstances, in combination with facial expressions and emotional voices. This article examines the psychological impact of participating in sigmoidoscopy screening for colorectal cancer prevention. The 1st study examined psychological well-being at 3 months, in relation to screening outcome, in 4,153 individuals. The 2nd study used longitudinal data to examine changes in psychological functioning from before to after screening in relation both to screening outcome and baseline indicators of vulnerability. There were few psychological differences between those who had received negative results or had polyps detected. These findings were confirmed in the longitudinal study, which also found no evidence for vulnerability to adverse effects among those who were initially most anxious or who perceived their risk of cancer to be higher. In a series of 6 experiments, two hypotheses were tested: that nominal heading perception is determined by the relative motion of images of objects positioned at different depths (R. F. Wang and J. E. Cutting, 1999) and that static depth information contributes to this determination. By manipulating static depth information while holding retinal-image motion constant during simulated self-movement, the authors found that static depth information played a role in determining perceived heading. Some support was also found for the involvement of R. F. Wang and J. E. Cutting's (1999) categories of object-image relative motion in determining perceived heading. Taken together, the previous studies confirm that global information is favoured during the processing of compound stimuli. In addition, global dominance occurs during both preattentive and attentive processing. The nature of this dominance is affected by whether or not an object is attended. Preattentive analysis leads to an automatic categorization but not to the identification of global features, whereas attentive processing lead to an inevitable identification of global information. Finally, the studies demonstrated a fundamental difference between global and local processing which seem to differ in their automatically level; local processing is greatly affected by attentional set, whereas global processing appears less subject to high level cognitive strategy. The market for fruits and vegetables has received considerable interest in recent years, with much of its growth attributed to consumer interest in nutrition and health. Quality has been indicated to be the most important factor in produce sales, and appearance is of noted significance with regard to perceived quality. The broad objectives of this research were to identify the impact of simultaneous colour contrast (i.e. the produce viewed through a mesh bag) on (a) attentive behaviours as measured by eye tracking and (b) perceived quality, visual appeal and purchase intention as measured with a Likert scale. To accomplish these objectives, six different types of produce (red apples, oranges, lemons, green apples, purple onions and white onions) were photographed with four differently coloured mesh treatments: the same (as the produce), complementary, complementary‐analogous and analogous. Visual stimuli were then presented during the eye tracking study and in a subsequent questionnaire. Colour contrast was found to have a significant effect on both resultant eye tracking variables [number of visual fixations (p < 0.001) and time spent (p < 0.001)]. Produce shown with mesh of the same, or an analogous colour, induced significantly more visual fixations and more time than those depicted with complementary or complementary‐analogous treatments. Subsequent to the eye tracking study, subjects were shown the stimuli and asked to rate the expected quality, visual appeal and their purchase intention for the 24 photographs (6 types of produce × 4 colour contrasts) by using a Likert scale. Pairwise comparisons suggested that produce packaged in the same or analogous mesh were perceived by subjects to be of higher quality, more visually appealing and evoked a higher level of purchase intention than those packaged in complementary or complementary‐analogous mesh (α = 0.05). 【目的】文化感知已经成为公园文化景观的重要价值构成。游客对公园的文化感知状态直接影响他们对公园的印象和体验。探究游客的文化感知状态对于提升公园形象和传达场所精神具有重要的意义。【方法】以天津北宁公园为研究区域,通过抓取国内4个主要旅游社交类网络平台的点评数据,构建公园评论数据库,对评论文本进行多层级词频分析、情感倾向及公园文化感知程度的重要性—表现性(importance-performance, IPA)分析,有助于自下而上地解读游客的景观认知。【结果】北宁公园使用人群主要为本地游客,公园景观已经成为本地游客集体记忆的一部分。本地游客重视儿时记忆,对于公园景观风貌和公园的年代感有较强的认同度和关注度,但是对于公园涉及的历史人物、事件及其与城市的关联,缺少深入了解。游客对于新建的园林建筑和公园的文化活动具有一定的认可度,但是关注程度较低。【结论】北宁公园是天津城市历史文化景观记忆的重要组成部分。居民与游客对公园的历史文化景点有高关注和认可,但对后期改建和更新景观的关注度较低,可能引发负面情绪。保留历史景点、强调景点风貌和历史性,以及推广相关传统活动可以增强公园的历史文化形象,吸引更多游客的关注和认同。本研究证实了网络点评数据在文化感知方面的可用性,为后续城市公园文化景观更新与保护提供了依据。 相似文献
