Therapists’ views on working with bilingual Spanish–English speaking clients: A qualitative investigation.

Through semistructured interviews, language switching in therapy was examined with 9 bilingual Spanish and English therapists. Therapists were asked about how and when they switched from one language to another during treatment, as well as the ways in which their clients’ switched languages. After the use of consensual qualitative research methods (C. E. Hill et al., 2005; C. E. Hill, B. J. Thompson, & E. N. Williams, 1997), the results revealed that therapists used language switching as a mechanism to establish trust, bond with clients, and promote disclosure through the use of specific phrases or specific words; particularly, the use of Spanish idiomatic expressions (dichos) served to engage, redirect, and increase client self-understanding and awareness. Therapists reported that their clients switched from English to Spanish when recounting experiences that involved certain emotions (e.g., anger) and represented themselves differently depending on the language they were speaking. Therapists also reported that their clients switched from English to Spanish to improve communication and to connect with them. Was it a phase? Young women's relinquishment of lesbian/bisexual identities over a 5-year period.

There have been many anecdotal accounts of individuals who self-identify as lesbian, gay, or bisexual only to relinquish these identities later. The current study examines this phenomenon among a sample of young nonheterosexual women who underwent 3 interviews over a 5-year period. Over a quarter of the women relinquished their lesbian/bisexual identities during this period: half reclaimed heterosexual identities and half gave up all identity labels. These women did not differ from those who maintained lesbian/bisexual identities regarding the age at which they underwent sexual identity milestones, the factors that precipitated their sexual questioning, or their recollection of childhood "indicators" same-sex sexuality. Women who relinquished their identities for heterosexual identities had small ratios of same-sex to other-sex attractions across the 5-year assessment period, but their attractions did not significantly change. Only 1 woman described her previous same-sex identification as a phase; the rest emphasized changes in how they interpreted or acted on their attractions. Recommendations about the knowledge and skills required of psychologists working with older adults.

This article is an initial attempt to furnish recommendations for the skills and knowledge psychologists need to work competently with older adults. We use two levels of competence across seven broad areas that are most relevant for professional practice. The fast competence level is that required of general psychologists who provide some professional services to older adults; the second level is that needed by more specialized experts in the field for practice and training. This article is not fashioned as a "how to" document and is not intended to disenfranchise anyone. Recommendations are proposed that delineate the types of competence needed for specific geropsychology activities that are relevant to a variety of settings providing mental health services to older adults. Review of Lesbian and gay psychology: Theory, research, and clinical applications.

Reviews the book, Lesbian and gay psychology: Theory, research, and clinical applications by Beverly Greene and Gregory M. Herek (1994). This volume is a collection of theoretical, research, and clinical articles which share in common only their focus of a psychological approach to gay and lesbian issues. Particularly admirable is the handling of a variety of lesbian issues including sexual pride and shame, physical appearance, and feminist politics of sexual orientation. There are also good articles on stereotypes and attitudes toward lesbians and gay men. This volume moves the psychological study of lesbian and gay issues beyond being merely gay affirmative into looking at hard issues, and reconnecting gay studies with the larger body of psychological theory, research, and clinical practice. An evaluation of the project needs of UK building clients

The investigation reported established a checklist of 50 different needs from which a client's specific requirements can be identified. The checklist comprises of 34 aspects of needs compiled from literature, and 16 others ascertained from an empirical investigation, through a questionnaire survey of 42 UK building clients. An evaluation of these needs indicated that `functionality of buildings', `timeliness of completion' and `value for money' are the aspects of needs, which at the moment are most frequently desired by clients. In quest of achieving optimal client satisfaction with building schemes, the generated checklist can be developed into a databank which, can easily be used for verifying a client's project requirements.     

Why recent researchers have not assessed the capacity of neuropsychologists to detect malingering.

Comments on the original article, "Neuropsychologists' capacity to detect adolescent malingerers" (see record 1989-09946-001) by D. Faust, K. Hart, T. J. Guilmette, and H. R. Arkes, in which Faust et al raised doubts about neuropsychologists' ability to detect malingering. In their study, Faust et al presented neuropsychologists with actual test results, a fabricated history, but neither collateral reports nor direct client contact during the assessment. In this comment, Schmidt asserts that this represented insufficient data on which to base a neuropsychological diagnosis; therefore, it was not surprising to him that neuropsychologists experienced great difficulty in detecting malingering. Review of Community Consultation.

Reviews the book, Community Consultation by Patrick O'Neill and Edison J. Trickett (1982). Community Consultation is organized around the theme of linkages. First, the consultant is linked to the client not just those with whom they work directly. Clients can include a single person, a group, a complex organization, or the community at large. In Part One, issues surrounding this linkage are examined, including consultant/setting fit and the contract, implicit or explicit, that defines the formal relationship between consultant and client. Part Two concentrates on the linkages among members of a particular client group or organization. Community Consultation is an extremely ambitious book. It defines consultation broadly as including not only the relatively conservative intervention described by Gerald Caplan and others but also elements of more radical interventions traditionally called community development and social action.
