How Convincing is Mr. Data's Smile: Affective Expressions of Machines

Emotions should play an important role in the design of interfaces because people interact with machines as if they were social actors. This paper presents a literature review on affective expressions through speech, music and body language. It summarizes the quality and quantity of their parameters and successful examples of synthesis. Moreover, a model for the convincingness of affective expressions, based on Fogg and Hsiang Tseng (1999), was developed and tested. The empirical data did not support the original model and therefore this paper proposes a new model, which is based on appropriateness and intensity of the expressions. Furthermore, the experiment investigated if the type of emotion (happiness, sadness, anger, surprise, fear and disgust), knowledge about the source (human or machine), the level of abstraction (natural face, computer rendered face and matrix face) and medium of presentation (visual, audio/visual, audio) of an affective expression influences its convincingness and distinctness. Only the type of emotion and multimedia presentations had an effect on convincingness. The distinctness of an expression depends on the abstraction and the media through which it is presented.

The Effects of Auditory and Visual Linguistic Distractors on Target Localization.

In this experiment, a Stroop-like paradigm was used to investigate the ability to attend to visuospatial cues while ignoring distracting stimuli in the auditory or visual modality. In Part 1, the authors investigated whether linguistic cue words (i.e., RIGHT, LEFT, DOWN, and UP) would induce endogenous shifts of attention to visual targets. In Part 2, a relevant distractor stimulus was introduced in a different modality from the endogenous cues to investigate effects of interference. Twenty-five right-handed students served as participants. Auditory and visual linguistic cues were effective in inducing shifts of visual attention when cues were presented alone. Furthermore, introducing a distractor stimulus decreased the efficacy of these cues differently depending on modality, suggesting that language processing and visuospatial attention may share neuronal resources. Implications for unimodal and supramodal mechanisms of selective attention and relevant neuronal networks are discussed. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

为从内部寻找滚动轴承发生故障的原因，经过比较从三种常用分析方法中选取了有限元法；以ANSYS为计算机工具，建立了其有限元模型；以典型的径向载荷和边界条件为例，分析研究了其内部位移和载荷分布规律；计算了其前两阶固有频率，对其进行了模态分析研究。由分析和研究结果寻找出其发生故障的内部机理，为深入研究滚动轴承的现场破坏机理提供了理论依据。     

Can Our Group Survive? An Investigation of the Evolution of Mixed‐Mode Groups

Applying an ecological and evolutionary perspective, this study examines the evolution and the sustainability of “mixed‐mode groups,” a type of voluntary association created and organized online to interact physically in geographically defined ways. Meetup.com is a website that facilitates the creation and coordination of mixed‐mode groups. Analysis of interviews with 34 Meetup group organizers and a longitudinal analysis of 100 randomly selected Meetup groups revealed the evolutionary processes at the group and population level, respectively. Specifically, the ecological factor of population density, the demographic factor of group age, the group's profit orientation, experience of leadership change and shared leadership, and external ties played decisive roles in predicting group survival. Implications of the findings for theoretical and practical contributions are discussed.     

激光参数对铝硅壳体焊缝形貌和气密性能影响

采用不同电流和脉冲宽度对硅质量分数为50%的高硅铝合金盒体和硅质量分数为27%的硅铝合金盖板进行了封焊实验,对封焊后焊缝表面形貌和壳体气密性能进行了研究与分析。在此基础上,获得了优化的激光参数,使高硅铝壳体激光封焊后气密性能满足并优于GJB 548B—2005的要求,对铝硅材料的工程应用具有一定的指导意义。
