Going to College and Unpacking Hazing: A Functional Approach to Decrypting Initiation Practices Among Undergraduates.

Initiation practices likely support group functioning by promoting group-relevant skills and attitudes, reinforcing status hierarchies, and stimulating cognitive, behavioral, and affective forms of social dependency. In field tests of these propositions, 269 undergraduates from same-gender organizations rated their initiation experiences. As predicted, athletes reported relatively more physical challenge and pain, whereas members of Greek-letter organizations reported more social deviance and embarrassment. Hierarchy was positively associated with initiations featuring social deviance but unexpectedly negatively related to physically and psychologically harsh initiations. Harsh treatment and fun independently predicted group identity. Laboratory experiments on male (n = 74) and female (n = 37) undergraduates found that discomforting inductions increased social dependence on group opinion and, for women, increased additional forms of dependence (proximity to induction agents and negative mood when left alone). The results across studies suggested that hazing's task masters are 3: schooling skills and attitudes, conveying hierarchy, and promoting social dependency. 关于统一社会信用代码立法问题的若干思考

2015年6月11日,国务院正式发布了《法人和其他组织统一社会信用代码制度建设总体方案》(国发[2015]33号).为全面落实33号文的规定,相关部门正启动相关立法工作.本文从组织机构代码管理部门的角度,对《组织机构代码管理办法》修订中的相关问题提出若干思考,以抛砖引玉,助力实现组织机构代码向统一代码的平稳过渡.

Qualitative research: meanings or practices?

With information systems (IS), as in other social sciences, the critique of quantitative research can lead to an oversimplified opposition between 'positivism' and 'interpretivism'. This is one reason why qualitative IS research sometimes unnecessarily limits itself to the study of participants' meanings. A simple tabulation of published qualitative research is used to reveal the predominance of interview-based studies in both sociology and IS. This is followed by a brief account of the limits of both quantitative studies of 'objective' variables and qualitative studies of 'subjective meanings'. The emerging case for IS research on organizational practices is set out, coupled with an account of Suchman's (1987) study of how workers make use of a computer-based system attached to a photocopier. The paper concludes with a call for an end to paradigm wars in organizational studies.     

Coordination in high-risk organizations: the need for flexible routines

In this article, we link the literatures on organizational routines and the management of uncertainties in order to establish the concept of flexible routines. Supported by flexible rules, this type of routine is argued to help achieve the right balance between standardization and flexibility, thus enabling resilience through loose coupling in high-risk organizations. The operationalization of the concept of flexible routine can help strategic decision-making regarding the design of high-risk systems as well as operational decision-making in the course of handling complex work processes. To underpin these arguments, findings from a case study on rules management in a railway organization are presented, where alignment of rules with the amount of uncertainty and actors’ competencies for handling uncertainties were analyzed. Implications for future research on flexible routines are discussed.
