Responds to the comments of P. L. Ackerman (see record 2006-12925-012), D. Y. Dai (see record 2006-12925-013), and M. C. Gridley (see record 2006-12925-014) on E. S. Spelke's original article "Sex differences in intrinsic aptitude for mathematics and science? A critical review" (see record 2005-15840-001). Here, the current authors first consider Ackerman's criticism of IQ measures of cognitive sex differences, as well as his suggestion that Advanced Placement tests be used as a second measure. Next, the authors discuss Dai's suggestion that cognition and motivation, abilities and strategies, are inseparably bound in any meaningful measure of aptitude for mathematics and science. Finally, the authors address Gridley's suggestion that differences in men's and women's thinking styles and preferences explain gender disparities in math and science fields. The soul of Spain: Spanish scholastic psychology and the making of modern subjectivity (1875–1931).

The aim of this article is to provide an approach to the study of the relations between psychology and Roman Catholic Scholasticism in the making of Spain as a modern nation-state. The crucial period in this process—extending from the beginning of King Alfonso XII’s reign in 1875 to the proclamation of the Second Spanish Republic in 1931—is considered. Attention is focused on Ethics textbooks published by Spanish Scholastic authors throughout the period. Through these school manuals, young students were trained in the ideas of citizenship and social coexistence held by the Catholic Church. An analysis of these didactic, programmatic works shows the central role played by the theory of faculties and modern psychological technologies (psychopedagogy, psychopathology, psychotechnics) in the Scholastic outlook. Thus, an attempt is made to show that psychology was used by Spanish Scholasticism as a way of legitimating a reactionary view of Spain, which eventually led to the emergence of National-Catholicism as the official ideology of the Franco regime (1939–1975). A Reexamination of GRE Scores.

Comments on a recent article by A. R. Marston (see record 1972-11620-001), which discussed the use of Graduate Record Examination (GRE) scores for selection of graduate students. The conclusion that GRE scores as a selection device should be re-examined was supported by data collected with a restriction of range on these scores. There is precious little linear relation between GRE scores and normal criteria for graduate success. Once a person is admitted to graduate school, his/her GRE scores should be burned, never to be used again. This, of course, still leaves the question as to whether GRE scores are an appropriate selection device for graduate students. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2010 APA, all rights reserved)

Predicting achievement in medical school: a comparison of preclinical and clinical criteria.

For 129 medical students, scores on an aptitude test battery were correlated with general grade averages at the end of both the first and third years of medical school. The trial battery, administered at the beginning of the first year, included (1) USAFI Reading Interpretation, (2) Miller Analogies, (3) DAT Space Relations, and (4) AGCT Validities with first-year grades (.44 to .04) were about the same as validities with third-year grades (.39 to .13), Reading Interpretation having the highest validity in each case. 中国大学取得了很多成就，但问题也不少，真正想持续健康发展，还是多看看问题为好。许多问题中，最严重的因而最令人忧郁的是行政权力的蔓延不仅未得到控制，而且还在延续并恶化。学术腐败渗透到各个方面，权学交易日益盛行，权力配置教育资源加剧了情况的恶化，大学年轻学者学术兴趣的转移，大学精神受到极恶劣的损毁，这一切，最主要的责任承担者应是目前更加彰显的行政化体制，更加强化了不良机制。最急切的问题在于大学体制的改革。
