This article reports results of a collaborative study of mathematics instruction in 1st and 5th grades in 5 schools in Pusan, Korea. The purpose of this collaborative effort was to describe classroom structures and processes in mathematics lessons, using the instruments and methodology developed by Stigler and Stevenson for their studies in Japan, Taiwan, and the United States (H. W. Stevenson et al., 1987; J. W. Stigler, S. -Y. Lee, G. W. Lucker, & H. W. Stevenson, 1982). Classes in Korea were teacher centered and organized in the whole-class structure. Lessons were made up of sequences of highly organized, systematic patterns of instruction dominated by teacher questions that included higher level procedural and conceptual questions. Instructional sequences were followed by short periods of practice and evaluation. Systematic conceptual development of mathematical procedures characterized the lesson content. These observations have implications for educators on both sides of the Pacific interested in why Asian students perform so well on international tests of mathematical achievement compared with students in the United States. The purpose of the present study was to examine the effectiveness and feasibility of phonological awareness training, with and without a beginning decoding component. 33 teachers in 8 urban schools were assigned randomly within their schools to 3 groups: control, phonological awareness training, and phonological awareness training with beginning decoding instruction and practice. Following training, teachers in the 2 treatment groups conducted the treatments for about 20 wks. In each teacher's class, pre- and posttreatment data were collected on 12–14 children (N?=?404); 312 children were tested again the following fall. At the end of kindergarten, the 2 treatment groups performed comparably and outperformed controls on the phonological awareness measures. On alphabetic (reading and spelling) tasks, however, the group participating in phonological awareness training with beginning decoding instruction did better than the other 2 groups. In the fall of the next year, many of these between-group differences remained but were less impressive. Implications are discussed for bridging research and practice. Abstract Students involved in the interactive whiteboard (IWB) evaluation, sponsored by the Centre for British Teachers (CfBT), were interviewed in regard to their perceptions about IWBs. Twelve group interviews (72 students) were conducted between January and Easter 2004 with Year 6 students (between 10 and 11 years of age) in six Local Education Authority (LEA) areas located in the North and South of England. Students were very enthusiastic about particular aspects of IWBs, such as their versatility in the classroom, multimedia capabilities and the fun and enjoyment they brought to learning.
