Silver Electrodeposition from Photographic Processing Solutions

This paper describes the parameters that are important in the industrial practice of silver removal from photographic fixers. The experiments were performed under potentiostatic control using synthetic solutions. The current efficiency was analysed as a function of the cathodic potential taking into account the deposit quality. A cathodic potential of ?0.5 V against a saturated calomel electrode is recommended. The conditions to prevent the darkening of the electrodeposit were investigated. The determination of silver concentration in the solution was made by direct potentiometry. The results obtained with synthetic fixers were corroborated by making the silver deposition from commercial fixers in an electrochemical reactor with rotating cylinder electrode intercalated in an electrolytic flow circuit in order to simulate practical conditions.

Do changes in cognitive factors influence outcome following multidisciplinary treatment for chronic pain? A cross-lagged panel analysis.

Changes in maladaptive cognitions may constitute therapeutic processes of multidisciplinary pain programs. A cross-lagged panel design was used to determine whether (a) early-treatment cognitive change predicted late-treatment outcome index change, but not vice versa; and (b) these effects remained significant with depression change controlled. Ninety chronic pain patients, in a 4-week multidisciplinary program, completed measures of catastrophizing, pain helplessness, depression, pain, interference, and activity level at pre-, mid-, and posttreatment. With depression changes controlled, early-treatment catastrophizing and pain helplessness changes predicted late-treatment outcome index changes, but not vice versa; early-treatment depression changes predicted late-treatment activity changes, but not vice versa. Findings advance understanding of pain treatment process and suggest that negative cognition changes may indeed affect improvements in treatment outcome. An integrated system of biological and catalytic oxidation for the removal of o-xylene from exhaust

Biofiltration is an efficient technology for treatment of gaseous waste. Its disadvantages, however, include large volume of bioreactor and slow adaptation to fluctuating concentrations in waste gas. Catalytic oxidation offers a high destructive efficiency at relatively low operating temperature and small unit. A bench scale system integrated with a biofilter and a catalytic oxidation unit for the treatment of gases containing o-xylene was investigated in this study. The catalytic oxidation unit was packed with Cu/Al₂O₃ catalyst. The results showed that 90% of o-xylene could be removed in the biofilter at the load below 38.2 g m⁻³ h⁻¹. High o-xylene concentration in inlet gas resulted in an overload of the biofilter. Using the Cu/Al₂O₃ catalytic oxidation unit, the concentration of o-xylene could be reduced evidently. The combination of the chemical and microbial processes not only led to a high and stable efficiency of o-xylene conversion, but also improved capacity resisting the shock loads. The Cu/Al₂O₃ was studied for o-xylene oxidation in temperature range of 90–320 °C. The o-xylene conversion was improved correspondingly with the increasing of oxidation temperature. The reaction mechanism of o-xylene oxidation on Cu/Al₂O₃ was also investigated using diffuse reflectance infrared Fourier transform spectroscopy (DRIFTS).
