On cup anemometer performance at high altitude above ground

In this paper, an experimental wind tunnel test campaign to assess the possibility of using cup anemometers at high altitude (~20 km) is performed. The experimental procedure consists of measuring the evolution of the rotational frequency for different wind dynamic pressures for different cups and the center of rotation radius. With particular interest on the point at which the rotation stops for decreasing values of the dynamic pressure is considered as the limit value for the anemometer operation. The results show that large cup radius anemometer rotors present more stable behavior (its stopping point at low wind speeds being less affected by the cups’ center rotation radius). The authors conclude that cup anemometers can be used at high altitude above ground. Results show that an anemometer equipped with a 40 mm cup radius rotor could be considered operative up to an altitude of 25 km above ground.

Japanese surname regions

This paper uses an extended case study of Japan to illustrate how surnames, or family names, can be used as a basis for regionalization. We undertake a comparison between inductively surname regions of Japan with areal geographies based upon both contemporary and historical prefecture (administrative) units. The work is seen as using highly disaggregate framework data to evaluate the integrity of the areal units that are used in regional science. It also is relevant to understanding population distributions, past and present, and the consequences of local, regional and national residential mobility and migration.     

Synthesis of TiO2 nanotube films via pulsed laser deposition followed by a hydrothermal treatment

Titanium dioxide nanotube (TNT) films were prepared by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) of P25 and P90 TiO₂ nanoparticles onto stainless steel foils followed by a hydrothermal treatment (HT). Heating the PLD films in a TNT precursor solution at 150°C resulted in a well-adhered dense mat of TNTs that were ～10?nm in diameter with a pore size of ～4?nm. The TiO₂ nanotube films were characterised by SEM, TEM, XRD and Raman spectroscopy.

Enhanced heterogeneous ferrioxalate photo-fenton degradation of reactive orange 4 by solar light

A combined homogeneous and heterogeneous photocatalytic decolourisation and degradation of a chlorotriazine Reactive azo dye Reactive Orange 4 (RO4) have been carried out using ferrous sulphate/ ferrioxalate with H₂O₂ and TiO₂-P25 particles. Solar/ferrous/H₂O₂/TiO₂-P25 and solar/ferrioxalate/H₂O₂/TiO₂-P25 processes are found to be more efficient than the individual photo-Fenton and solar/TiO₂-P25 processes. A comparison of these two processes with UV/ferrous/H₂O₂/TiO₂-P25 and UV/ferrioxalate/H₂O₂/TiO₂-P25 reveals that ferrioxalate is more efficient in solar light whereas ferrous ion is more efficient in UV light. The experimental parameters such as pH, initial H₂O₂, Fe²⁺, ferrioxalate and TiO₂-P25 concentration strongly influenced the dye removal rate in solar processes. The optimum operating conditions of these two combined processes are reported.
