Rainwater can collect in a lens-shaped region within the rock of a tropical island, and may be separated from the underlying salt water by a sharp interface. This paper presents a nonlinear theory for determining the shape of this interface. The island is assumed to be saturated with rain, and provision is made for the outflow of rain-water through the sides of the island. The effect of a bore well on the shape of the interface is investigated, and the problem is solved using a spectral method. A new principle is presented to generate isotropic uniform random (IUR) test lines hitting a geometric structure in three-dimensional space (3D). The principle therefore concerns the estimation of surface area, volume, membrane thickness, etc., of arbitrary structures with piecewise smooth boundary. The principle states that a point-sampled test line on an isotropic plane through a fixed point in 3D is effectively an invariant test line in 3D. Particular attention is devoted to the stereology of particles, where an alternative to the surfactor method is obtained to estimate surface area. We consider a problem stemming from recent models of phase transitions in stimulus‐responsive hydrogels, wherein a sharp interface separates swelled and collapsed phases. Extended finite element methods that approximate the local solution with an enriched basis such that the mesh need not explicitly ‘fit’ the interface geometry are emphasized. Attention is focused on the weak enforcement of the normal configurational force balance and various options for evaluating the jump in the normal component of the solute flux at the interface. We show that as the reciprocal interfacial mobility vanishes, it plays the role of a penalty parameter enforcing a pure Dirichlet constraint, eventually triggering oscillations in the interfacial velocity. We also examine alternative formulations employing a Lagrange multiplier to enforce this constraint. It is shown that the most convenient choice of basis for the Lagrange multiplier results in oscillations in the multiplier field and a decrease in accuracy and rate of convergence in local error norms, suggesting a lack of stability in the discrete formulation. Under such conditions, neither the direct evaluation of the gradient of the approximation at the phase interface nor the interpretation of the Lagrange multiplier field provide a robust means to obtain the jump in the normal component of solute flux. Fortunately, the adaptation and use of local, domain‐integral methodologies considerably improves the flux evaluations. Double-edge notched (DENT) steel plates were pulled until complete fracture and several experimental observations were made (using profilometry and scanning electron microscopy). The essential work of fracture (EWF) model was found to be well verified. Numerical simulations—up to the maximum load only—of some experiments were performed using the finite element method (FEM), and incorporating geometric and material non-linearities (large deformation elasto-plasticity). Evaluation of the Hubbell integral for an omnidirectional detector response to a rectangular plaque gamma emitting radiation source using a different numerical computation method on a personal computer was made. For a plaque consisting of several strip gamma emitters, exposure rates at different positions above the source were calculated using 'exact' evaluation and an approximate method. Optimization method is used to find source activity of each strip, so as to acquire desirable dose uniformity of the irradiated products. This paper presents a new concept for symmetric boundary element method (SBEM) applicable to 2-D steady-state and transit potential problems. Two kinds of SBEM formulations are derived. Symmetry is obtained simply through matrix manipulation, and no hypersingularity appears. Therefore, SBEM is much easier than the traditional symmetric Galerkin BEM. Compared with the traditional asymmetric BEM, the present SBEM can reduce the computational cost for time domain problems only. However, when applied to BEM/FEM coupling procedure, SBEM can reduce the computational cost for both steady-state and time domain problems. The Kalman Filter is traditionally viewed as a prediction-correction filtering algorithm. In this work we show that it can
be viewed as a Bayesian fusion algorithm and derive it using Bayesian arguments. We begin with an outline of Bayes theory,
using it to discuss well-known quantities such as priors, likelihood and posteriors, and we provide the basic Bayesian fusion
equation. We derive the Kalman Filter from this equation using a novel method to evaluate the Chapman-Kolmogorov prediction
integral. We then use the theory to fuse data from multiple sensors. Vying with this approach is the Dempster-Shafer theory,
which deals with measures of “belief”, and is based on the nonclassical idea of “mass” as opposed to probability. Although
these two measures look very similar, there are some differences. We point them out through outlining the ideas of the Dempster-Shafer
theory and presenting the basic Dempster-Shafer fusion equation. Finally we compare the two methods, and discuss the relative
