Heat Shock-Induced Three-Dimensional-Like Proliferation of Normal Human Fibroblasts Mediated by Pressed Silk

The aim of this study was to determine the optimal heat treatment conditions for enhancement of pressed silk-mediated 3D-like proliferation of normal human dermal fibroblasts, as well as to determine the responses to heat shock of cells and intracellular signaling pathways. The beginning of 3D-like pattern formation of cells was observed in the second week after the start of the experiment. The mean rates of beginning of 3D-like pattern formation by cells heat-treated at 40 ºC and 43 ºC for 10 min were significantly higher (3.2- and 8.6-fold, respectively) than that of untreated cells. We found that apoptosis had occurred in 7.5% and 50.0% of the cells at one week after heat treatment for 10 min at 43 ºC and 45 ºC, respectively. Western blot analysis demonstrated that phosphorylation of p38 MAPK and that of Hsp27 were markedly increased by heat treatment at 43 ºC for 10 min. The results of an experiment using a p38 MAPK inhibitor and Hsp27 inhibitor suggest that activation of p38 MAPK by heat shock is associated with 3D-like cell proliferation and that Hsp27 contributes to the inhibition of apoptosis. The results of this study should be useful for further studies aimed at elucidation of the physiologic mechanisms underlying thermotherapy.

Contrasting activity patterns of two related octopus species, Octopus macropus and Octopus vulgaris.

Octopus macropus and Octopus vulgaris have overlapping habitats and are exposed to similar temporal changes. Whereas the former species is described as nocturnal in the field, there are conflicting reports about the activity time of the latter one. To compare activity patterns, the authors tested both species in the laboratory. Octopuses were exposed to a light-dark cycle and held under constant dim light for 7 days each. O. macropus showed nocturnal and light-cued activity. According to casual observations, O. vulgaris started out nocturnal but had switched to mostly diurnal when the experiment began. Individual variation of its activity was found. The different activity patterns of O. macropus and O. vulgaris might reflect their lifestyles, the latter species being more generalist. Generation of low‐contrast sinusoidal test patterns on a high‐brightness display

Abstract— By using a technique of addressing individual subpixels, low‐contrast sinusoidal test patterns were generated on a high‐brightness color LCD. Detection tasks were performed using 2AFC experiments, and the value obtained for the contrast threshold was found to agree well with previously published data. As long as the shape of the pattern was close to sinusoidal, a good correlation was found between pattern contrast and detection rate. The influence of the eye‐adaptation luminance level was studied and compared to the f‐factor published by Barten. Luminance non‐uniformities in the background did not cause any significant change in the detection threshold.     

Identifying criterion-related patterns of predictor scores using multiple regression.

Along with examples involving vocational interests and mathematics achievement, the authors describe a multiple regression based, pattern recognition procedure that can be used to identify a pattern of predictor scores associated with high scores on a criterion variable. This pattern is called the criterion pattern. After the criterion pattern has been identified, a second regression procedure can be used to estimate the proportion of variation attributable to the criterion pattern. Cross-validation can then be used to estimate the variation attributable to a criterion pattern derived from regression weights estimated in another sample. 基于支持向量机的控制图模式识别

为了提高控制图模式识别效果，提出混合核函数支持向量机的模式识别方法。在模型构造中采用一对一多类分类支持向量机，并利用遗传算法优化混合核函数支持向量机参数。仿真和应用结果表明，混合核函数支持向量机对各种模式控制图的总体识别率，I型错判均优于单独核函数、概率神经网络和小波概率神经网络，且具有良好的泛化能力，适合生产现场实时在线工序质量控制。

可扩展的电力系统故障集成分析环境

随着我国电力系统的快速发展,各种故障分析算法层出不穷,对故障分析软件提出了越来越高的要求,然而目前国内的主要录波器和电力综合自动化设备提供商提供的专业分析软件,其公式编辑器环境相当简陋,且算法较为单一,不支持算法库的动态扩展,针对这种现状,采用设计模式的思想、插件技术和先进的C 模块库:STLPORT、BOOST实现了一个通用的电力故障集成分析环境,系统内集成了大量的通用电力算法库,并且采用插件技术实现了分析算法的可扩展性。     

Geographical discrimination of honeys through the employment of sugar patterns and common chemical quality parameters

 Sixty honey samples from six different production zones of the provinces of Salamanca, Zamora and Cáceres (west Spain) were analyzed for 13 common legal physico-chemical parameters and 17 sugars in order to test for their geographical classification. Application of linear stepwise discriminant analysis to a number of variables made of a selection of analytical results and simple mathematical functions of them allowed, firstly, discrimination between honeys from these six zones and, secondly, discrimination between honeys from the three zones of the province of Salamanca. The eight most discriminant variables selected for the six zones were a combination of nine physico-chemical parameters and sugars, with 85.00% of correctly classified samples; for the three zones of the province of Salamanca, regarded with special interest in our study, seven variables were selected (consisting of seven single physico-chemical parameters and sugars) with a result of 100.00% of correctly classified samples.
