This paper focuses on recent trends and issues in the EU-25 countries related to one key broadband application area: digital media ‘content’ applications. It draws upon recently completed research addressing current and future uses and applications of broadband in the EU-25 area.
The paper presents key findings from the BEACON project concerning the broadband content trends and issues in the EU-25 countries. First, the paper briefly considers recent literature on broadband and digital media innovations as well as the policy context in Europe, which has an important influence on framing supports for innovation in content and digital media. Next, it addresses a number of key issues that impact upon the creation of content services. These include the high cost of content production and the difficulty of forming attractive business cases given the uncertainties related to user demand, and the IPR and copyright regimes. It will also consider users’ patterns of engagement with broadband content and emerging user applications. Next, the paper discusses whether broadband is reaching a ‘tipping point’, whereby broadband access is becoming the norm and in the next five years we will see the emergence of innovative, dynamic content services. The paper considers whether recent moves by three sets of significant actors (media corporations, the advertising sector, and EC regulators) could be early signs of a tipping point in favour of the creation of and more focused support for broadband content services. 相似文献
Objective quality assessment of digital holograms has proven to be a challenging task. While prediction of perceptual quality of the recorded 3D content from the holographic wavefield is an open problem; perceptual quality assessment from content after rendering, requires a time-consuming rendering step and a multitude of possible viewports. In this research, we use 96 Fourier holograms of the recently released HoloDB database to evaluate the performance of well-known and state-of-the-art image quality metrics on digital holograms. We compare the reference holograms with their distorted versions: (i) before rendering on the real and imaginary parts of the quantized complex-wavefield, (ii) after converting Fourier to Fresnel holograms, (iii) after rendering, on the quantized amplitude of the reconstructed data, and (iv) after subsequently removing speckle noise using a Wiener filter. For every experimental track, the quality metric predictions are compared to the Mean Opinion Scores (MOS) gathered on a 2D screen, light field display and a holographic display. Additionally, a statistical analysis of the results and a discussion on the performance of the metrics are presented. The tests demonstrate that while for each test track a few quality metrics present a highly correlated performance compared to the multiple sets of available MOS, none of them demonstrates a consistently high-performance across all four test-tracks. 相似文献
Digital comparators are important arithmetic components used in digital systems to determine if two numbers are equal, or if one number is greater or less than the other. In this work, the design of magnitude and 2's complement comparators is examined. New OR-based full tree and simplified tree magnitude comparator architectures are proposed. The existing and the proposed comparator architectures are implemented in standard cell technology and evaluated, after extensive experimental analysis, in high performance and relaxed conditions. The proposed comparators operate faster than the existing ones, while operating at the same speed yield significant improvement in area complexity and power dissipation. 相似文献
A resonant helical coil antenna-like structure has been explored for wireless excitation of piezoelectric devices. The basic idea behind this wireless excitation of piezoelectric device is electromagnetic resonance along with piezoelectric resonance. The analytical studies reveal that the maximum excitation occurs in the piezoelectric device when the operating frequency of the system coincides with its mechanical resonant frequency. It has been seen that the intensity of piezoelectric stimulation depends on the frequency of operation, air gap, relative position, electric load, and the generated electric field strength by the helical coil antenna-like structure. The analytical results are verified with the measured experimental results, and are found to be in well agreement. By adopting this proposed wireless excitation system the free actuation of the piezoelectric devices can be enabled as opposed to the confined motion for various potential applications. 相似文献
