The effect of wind on the potato aphid, Macrosiphum euphorbiae, male responsiveness to the sex pheromone, and on the calling behavior of virgin oviparae, was studied under constant wind speeds in the laboratory and in the field. A significant proportion of females called at wind speeds up to 4 m/sec, whereas male flight behavior in clean air was inhibited at velocities > 2 m/sec. However, males continued to walk over the range of wind speeds at which females called. Under constant wind velocities in a wind tunnel, males downwind of calling females oriented on the upwind edge of the release stand, and fewer individuals took flight at low constant wind speeds than in a clean air plume. In all cases, whether calling females were present or not, the males that took flight moved downwind. However, when a bridge was available, a significant proportion of males walked upwind to the pheromone source. The same orientation and walking behaviors were observed when males were placed downwind of calling females under variable wind conditions in the field. However, contrary to the laboratory results, 30% of the males tested flew upwind and landed on the source. A more detailed examination found that males orienting toward a source would walk if wind speeds were high but initiated flight in an “upwind” direction if there was a lull in wind velocity. These findings suggest that for the potato aphid, and probably for many other insect species with weak flight capacity, walking behavior is a significant component of pheromone-mediated mate location. This would permit males to continue foraging for calling females in the vicinity when wind velocities inhibit flight.  相似文献

A feedback strategy of drying control of mate leaves in a thin-layer conveyor-belt dryer was experimentally evaluated. Moisture content in the discharge of the continuous dryer was controlled by manually adjusting the speed of the moving belt between 3.7 × 10?4 and 15.2 × 10?4 m s?1 for approximately 7200 s in 120 s time steps. The sets of PID controller parameters and manipulated conveyor velocities were computed with a dynamic drying model at conditions identical to those found in the closed-loop experiments. The model is represented by a system of two partial differential equations built by energy and solute mass balances in the solid phase of the dryer. A large set of experimental drying curves and temperature of mate leaves as a function of drying time, in the temperature range from 55 to 130°C, confirmed the reliability of the considered model. Experimental closed-loop responses of discharge moisture content in the presence of disturbances in the feed moisture content (≈ 0.5 ? 1.7 dry basis) and variations in set-point (≈ 0.1 ? 1.0 dry basis) validated the suggested control scheme.  相似文献

A previous investigation of cuticular hydrocarbon variation among Hawaiian swordtail crickets (genus Laupala) revealed that these species differ dramatically in composition of cuticular lipids. Cuticular lipid extracts of Laupala species sampled from the Big Island of Hawaii also possess a greatly reduced number of chemicals (as evidenced by number of gas chromatography peaks) relative to ancestral taxa sampled from the geologically older island of Maui. One possible explanation for this biogeographic pattern is that reduction in chemical diversity observed among the Big Island taxa represents the loss of ancestral hydrocarbons found on Maui. To test this hypothesis, we characterized and identified the structures of cuticular hydrocarbons for seven species of Hawaiian Laupala, two from Maui (ancestral) and five from the Big Island of Hawaii (derived) by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. Big Island Laupala possessed a reduced number of alkenes as well as a reduction in the diversity of methyl-branch positions relative to species sampled from Maui (ancestral), thus supporting our hypothesis of a founder-induced loss of chemical diversity. The reduction in diversity of ancestral hydrocarbons was more severe within one of the two sister lineages on the Big Island, suggesting that post-colonizing processes, such as drift or selection, also have influenced hydrocarbon evolution in this group.  相似文献

This work evaluates the enzymatic activity of peroxidase (POD) and polyphenoloxidase (PPO) present in the crude extract of mate tea leaves (Ilex paraguariensis St. Hill) submitted to compressed CO2. The effects of temperature, exposure time, solvent reduced density, pressure, and depressurization rate on the activity of peroxidase and polyphenoloxidase were evaluated through a fractionated factorial experimental planning. Results show that temperature of 30 °C, pressure of 70.5 bar, exposure time of 1 h, depressurization rate of 10 kg m−3 min−1 and carbon dioxide reduced density of 0.60 led to an enhancement of around 25% in the peroxidase activity and a polyphenoloxidase activity loss of 50%. Using this experimental condition, thermal stability at low temperature (−4 °C) and the influence of successive pressurization/depressurization cycles were determined. Results suggest that it is possible to increase the specificity of the enzymatic extract towards enhancing POD or PPO activity depending on the experimental condition employed, and that the processing of enzymatic complexes with compressed CO2 may be a promising route to increase the specificity of enzymatic extracts.  相似文献

Dried mate leaves or aqueous extract of dried mate leaves added to chicken meat balls prior to cooking for antioxidant protection was found not to affect taste or smell of the product significantly for addition corresponding to 0.050% of dried mate leaves, while 0.10% changed the smell but not the taste and more significantly for dried leaves. Addition of aqueous mate extract corresponding to 0.050% of mate is recommended as an alternative to more strongly flavoured herbs for oxidative protection of meat products.  相似文献

This study examined how differences in expectations about meeting impacted the degree of deceptive self-presentation individuals displayed within the context of dating. Participants filled out personality measures in one of four anticipated meeting conditions: face-to-face, email, no meeting, and a control condition with no pretense of dating. Results indicated that, compared to baseline measures, male participants increased the amount they self-presented when anticipating a future interaction with a prospective date. Specifically, male participants emphasized their positive characteristics more if the potential date was less salient (e.g., email meeting) compared to a more salient condition (e.g., face-to-face meeting) or the control conditions. Implications for self-presentation theory, online social interaction, and online dating research will be discussed.  相似文献

Mate location responses of male and female solitary-reared locusts that had either experienced no crowding or that had been crowded for varying periods were studied in a flatbed wind tunnel. Two hypotheses were explored: that both sexes of this phase of the locust participate in locating the other by using a combination of chemical and visual signals, and that individuals that experience some crowding (i.e., undergo varying levels of phase shift) can compete effectively with their solitary counterparts in mate location and mating. Our results confirm that both male and female solitarious locusts actively participate in mate location, although the former is the more aggressive partner. The responses of the insects are stronger when a visual cue is provided with the olfactory signal. Crowding of solitary-reared adults enhances their responsiveness to the other sex in the absence and presence of the visual cue. This phenomenon may constitute one of several mechanisms that are involved in recruiting solitary individuals into gregarizing groups and facilitating the spread of gregarious characters across a reproductively active solitarious population.  相似文献

The Mediterranean fruit fly, Ceratitis capitata (Wiedemann), displays a lek mating system characterized by a high level of female discrimination among potential mates. The basis of female choice is not understood, but recent studies indicate that male exposure to the aroma of certain plant structures or essential oils may increase mating success. In particular, exposure to the aroma of ginger root oil (GRO) enhances male mating frequency, and several sterile-male release programs against C. capitata have incorporated ‘aromatherapy’ (large-scale exposure of pre-release insects to GRO) to increase the effectiveness of control efforts. We investigated the mechanism underlying female preference for GRO-exposed males. Two sets of experiments were conducted. In the first, we monitored female attraction to (1) freshly killed flies, or (2) paper discs that contained hexane extracts from varying treatments. In these tests, females were sighted more often (1) near GRO-exposed than non-exposed males (even when the males were visually concealed) and (2) near extracts from GRO-exposed than non-exposed males. These findings suggest a ‘perfume effect’, whereby female mate choice is mediated by olfactory differences. In the second set, we compared (1) mate choice between intact females and females from which both antennae had been surgically removed, and (2) mating success between intact males and males from which both antennae had been surgically removed before GRO exposure. Intact females preferred GRO-exposed males, whereas females lacking both antennae rarely mated and showed no preference between GRO-exposed and non-exposed males. In the opposite treatment (intact females but surgically altered males), GRO-exposed males lacking both antennae mated as frequently as GRO-exposed intact males. These data suggest that female choice was dependent on olfactory perception of male odor but that male mating success did not depend on olfactory perception of GRO aroma, suggesting, in turn, that GRO conferred a mating advantage through an external phenomenon (possibly alteration of cuticular scent) rather than through internal processing (pheromone synthesis).  相似文献

Few studies have addressed how chemosensation may be impaired by chemical alterations of the environment and anthropogenic disturbance. Humic acid (HA) is a pervasive, naturally occurring organic derivative found in aquatic and terrestrial environments; human activity, however, can lead to elevated levels of HA. Recent studies suggest that environments that contain high levels of HA may hinder chemical communication. We tested the ability of adult zebrafish (Danio rerio) to discriminate between conspecific and heterospecific urinary chemical cues found in the presence and absence of HA. We show that high humic acid levels (200 mg/l) can impair the ability to differentiate conspecifics from heterospecifics. We also found that zebrafish prefer untreated water over HA-treated water. These findings suggest that, in addition to human-produced synthetic compounds, changes in the abundance of naturally occurring substances may also negatively impact natural behaviors in aquatic species by disturbing the sensory environment.  相似文献
