A study of the institutional forces influencing the adoption intention of RFID by suppliers

We extended the application of Roger's model for evaluating the institutional forces influencing the adoption intention of RFID by retailer's suppliers. Drawing on institutional theory, we examined how different institutional forces experienced by retailer's suppliers were related to their relational investment on inter-organizational information sharing. Data collected from 130 major Taiwanese suppliers was used in our empirical analyses. We found that relational investment was the most critical adoption factor, which also indirectly enhanced organizational readiness for technological adoption intention. From a Taiwanese perspective, our findings should be helpful in understanding what factors significantly impact the adoption of RFID technology.     

Incorporating prior model into Gaussian processes regression for WEDM process modeling

Sufficient sampling is usually time-consuming and expensive but also is indispensable for supporting high precise data-driven modeling of wire-cut electrical discharge machining (WEDM) process. Considering the natural way to describe the behavior of a WEDM process by IF-THEN rules drawn from the field experts, engineering knowledge and experimental work, in this paper, the fuzzy logic model is chosen as prior knowledge to leverage the predictive performance. Focusing on the fusion between rough fuzzy system and very scarce noisy samples, a simple but effective re-sampling algorithm based on piecewise relational transfer interpolation is presented and it is integrated with Gaussian processes regression (GPR) for WEDM process modeling. First, by using re-sampling algorithm encoded derivative regularization, the prior model is translated into a pseudo training dataset, and then the dataset is trained by the Gaussian processes. An empirical study on two benchmark datasets intuitively demonstrates the feasibility and effectiveness of this approach. Experiments on high-speed WEDM (DK7725B) are conducted for validation of nonlinear relationship between the design variables (i.e., workpiece thickness, peak current, on-time and off-time) and the responses (i.e., material removal rate and surface roughness). The experimental result shows that combining very rough fuzzy prior model with training examples still significantly improves the predictive performance of WEDM process modeling, even with very limited training dataset. That is, given the generalized prior model, the samples needed by GPR model could be reduced greatly meanwhile keeping precise.

A new approach for estimating null value in relational database

In general, a database system will not operate properly if it exist some null values of attributes in the system. In this paper, we propose a new approach to estimate null values in relational database, which utilize other clustering algorithm to cluster data, and use fuzzy correlation and distance similarity to calculate the correlation of different attribute. For verifying our method, this paper utilize mean of absolute error rate (MAER) as evaluation criterion to compare with other methods; it is shown that our proposed method proves importance than the existing methods for estimating null values in relational database systems.     

The intriguing role of spanish language vocabulary knowledge in predicting English reading comprehension.

This study explored a holistic model of English reading comprehension among a sample of 135 Spanish-English bilingual Latina and Latino 4th-grade students This model took into account Spanish language reading skills and language of initial literacy instruction. Controlling for language of instruction, English decoding skill, and English oral language proficiency, the authors explored the effects of Spanish language alphabetic knowledge, fluency, vocabulary knowledge, and listening comprehension on English reading comprehension. Results revealed a significant main effect for Spanish vocabulary knowledge and an interaction between Spanish vocabulary and English fluency, such that faster English readers benefited more from Spanish vocabulary knowledge than their less fluent counterparts. This study demonstrates the existence of literary skills transfer from the 1st to the 2nd language, as well as limits on such transfer. Family involvement in school and low-income children's literacy: Longitudinal associations between and within families.

Longitudinal data from kindergarten to 5th grade on both family involvement in school and children's literacy performance were examined for an ethnically diverse, low-income sample (N = 281). Within families, increased school involvement predicted improved child literacy. In addition, although there was an achievement gap in average literacy performance between children of more and less educated mothers if family involvement levels were low, this gap was nonexistent if family involvement levels were high. These results add to existing evidence on the value of family involvement in school by demonstrating that increased involvement between kindergarten and 5th grade is associated with increased literacy performance and that high levels of school involvement may have added reward for low-income children with the added risk of low parent education. As such, these results support arguments that family involvement in school should be a central aim of practice and policy solutions to the achievement gap between lower and higher income children. Kress encourages us to understand writing as “transformative engagement in the world,” and his emphasis on the materiality of modes draws our attention to the multiple possibilities offered by different materials and sensory channels. Writing involves the transformation of all aspects of the resources for meaning; thus writing is always an ethical act, and the worlds that different cultures and communities bring forth through their semiotic work offer different possibilities of being.
