In the retail supermarket industry where cashiers perform repetitive, light manual material-handling tasks when scanning and handling products, reports of musculoskeletal disorders and discomfort are high. Ergonomics tradeoffs exist between sitting and standing postures, which are further confounded by the checkstand design and point-of-sale technology, such as the scanner. A laboratory experiment study was conducted to understand the effects of working position (sitting versus standing) and scanner type (bi-optic versus single window) on muscle activity, upper limb and spinal posture, and subjective preference of cashiers. Ten cashiers from a Dutch retailer participated in the study. Cashiers exhibited lower muscle activity in the neck and shoulders when standing and using a bi-optic scanner. Shoulder abduction was also less for standing conditions. In addition, all cashiers preferred using the bi-optic scanner with mixed preferences for sitting n = 6) and standing (n = 4). Static loading of the muscles was relatively high compared with benchmarks, suggesting that during the task of scanning, cashiers may not have adequate recovery time to prevent fatigue. It is recommended that retailers integrate bi-optic scanners into standing checkstands to minimize postural stress, fatigue and discomfort in cashiers.  相似文献

The purpose of the study was to compare muscular activity levels and sitting posture displayed by 10 children (mean age =4·7 years) when performing tracing tasks while seated at a traditional work station (level desk top, 5° backward sloping seat) and at an ergonomically designed work station (15° sloping desk top, 15° forward sloping seat). EMG profiles of latissimus dorsi (LD), erector spine (ES), and superior trapezius (ST) were sampled using Medi-trace disposable surface electrodes for 10min on the non-dominant side. Muscle activity was sampled (1000 Hz) every 2min for 5000 ms while the subjects performed the tracing tasks at each station. Raw EMG signals of the five trials for each muscle were processed by removing signal offset, full-wave rectification, and integration. The subjects' posture was monitored from a lateral view using a Panasonic VHS video camera while the children were seated at each work station. Neck flexion angle and the angle between the torso and thigh (hip angle) were manually sampled from the video images each 1 min as an indication of the posture adopted by the subjects during the tracing tasks. Use of f-tests for dependent means indicated that there was no significant difference in either mean ES or ST muscle activity as a function of work station design. However, subjects demonstrated significantly less LD activity when seated at the ergonomic work station (mean = 20·9 V ms) compared with the traditional work station (mean = 24·4 V ms, t = ? 2·88, p = 0·018). When seated at the ergonomically designed work station, subjects demonstrated less neck flexion (mean = 34·4°) and a significantly larger hip angle (mean = 107·8°, t= ? 3·46, p = 0·003) than when seated at the traditional work station (neck flexion = 38·7°, hip angle = 95·5°). It was concluded that use of the ergonomic work station could assist in maintaining a more efficient anatomical alignment of young children when sitting and writing.  相似文献

This study evaluated the efficacy of three interventions at reducing the adverse effects of muscle fatigue on postural control. The first provided rest breaks according to perceived decrements in postural stability, while the other two involved auditory stimulations (static pure tone and moving conversation). Sixteen participants performed repetitive box handling (lifting + lowering) over 1.5 h to induce muscle fatigue mainly in the lumbar extensors. Trials of quiet upright stance were completed at 10-min intervals, during which the interventions (or a control condition) were applied. Postural control was assessed using perceived stability (PS) and several measures derived from centre-of-pressure (COP) time series. Allowance of rest breaks did not significantly affect any of the objective measures, though a trend indicated an offset to fatigue-induced decreases in PS. Both the static pure tone and moving conversation led to significant changes in the dependent measures indicating a mitigation of fatigue-induced postural instability. PRACTITIONER SUMMARY: We examined the effects of three control strategies on postural control in the presence of muscle fatigue induced by a simulated occupational task. The findings can facilitate the development of future strategies or practical interventions to reduce falling risk and prevent falls.  相似文献

Seated work has been shown to constitute a risk factor for low-back pain. This is attributed to the prolonged and monotonous low-level mechanical load imposed by a seated posture. To evaluate the potential health effects with respect to the low back of office chairs with a movable seat and back rest, trunk kinematics, erector spinae EMG, spinal shrinkage and local discomfort were assessed in 10 subjects performing simulated office work. On three separate occasions subjects performed a 3 h task consisting of word processing, computer-aided design and reading. Three chairs were used, one with a fixed seat and back rest and two dynamic chairs, one with a seat and back rest movable in a fixed ratio with respect to each other, and one with a freely movable seat and back rest. Spinal shrinkage measurements showed a larger stature gain when working on the two dynamic chairs as compared with working on the chair with fixed seat and back rest. Trunk kinematics and erector spinae EMG were strongly affected by the task performed but not by the chair type. The results imply that dynamic office chairs offer a potential advantage over fixed chairs, but the effects of the task on the indicators of trunk load investigated were more pronounced than the effects of the chair.  相似文献

The body's responses to sitting are complex and involve the anatomy and physiology of the sitter as well as the structure of the seat, the desk and the environment. In the light of recent research, the major reactions of the spine, the muscles and the spinal discs are discussed. Their interactions when adopting sitting postures are described. Reasons are given why certain sitting postures are to be preferred. The mechanisms that may give rise to muscle and disc damage, as well as back pain, as a result of adverse sitting postures are outlined. The design consequences of the research are then presented, showing how the seat shape arises from the previously described data. The influence of backrest design on sitting comfort and in the reduction of loading on the body is shown. Finally, a brief discussion of the influences from the work surface illustrates how the combination of seat and workplace can reduce the risks of injury by mitigating body loadings over the working day.  相似文献

The objective of this study was to determine the influence of scapular support on the effects of lumbar support and to prove that a high and straight backrest is inappropriate. In literature the importance of a lumbar support is noted, although data about optimal dimensions is an under-researched topic and in earlier studies on force distribution and muscle activity the backrest had a fixed form. The lumbar support is needed to maintain the lumbar lordosis but no studies deal with the question of the precise dimensions of the backrest at shoulder level. With a specially designed apparatus, forces on shoulder and seat were measured separately, and the force on the pelvis calculated, while varying seat and backrest inclination within the range from 0° to 17°. Seat-to-backrest angle (at the level of lumbar support) was kept constant at 90°. The distance between the tangent to the lumbar support and the parallel tangent to the scapular support was varied from 0, 2, 4, 6 and 8 cm. This distance is called the free shoulder space. Electromyography was measured at the erector spinae at the levels of the L1, T8 and T5 vertebrae. For all seat angles, a free shoulder space of d=0 cm resulted in the highest back muscle activity. In agreement with the biomechanical model, EMG activity reduced with an increase of seat tilt and increase of free shoulder space. With increasing free shoulder space, a larger part of the total backrest force was carried by the lumbar support. This study shows that a high and straight backrest overrules lumbar support. Offering free shoulder space of at least 6 cm reduces back muscle activity and allows for lumbar support.  相似文献

The objective of this work is to analyze the causes of lumbar discomfort while sitting on a chair, by analyzing the relationship of lumbar curvature, pelvic inclination and their mobilities with discomfort. An experiment has been performed with healthy subjects, in which comfort, postural and mobility parameters have been measured. Their relationship has been analyzed with multivariate analysis. Factorial analysis has been used to represent all the correlated variables measured. Logistic regression and discriminant analyses have been used to classify discomfort/absence of discomfort. The results show that great changes of posture are a good indicator of discomfort, and that lordotic postures with forward leaned pelvis and low mobility are the principal causes of the increase of discomfort.  相似文献
