Social insects work together to complete tasks. However, different individuals within a colony may vary in task proficiency. We investigated if fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) worker body size influenced the ability to construct tunnels—a key component of subterranean nests. We monitored excavation by worker groups in a substrate of small wetted glass particles in quasi-two-dimensional arenas. Morphological and network features of the tunnel system were measured. Total tunnel area did not differ significantly between groups of large and small workers, although the tunnel area of control sized workers was significantly larger than that of large workers. Moreover, large workers created wider but shorter tunnels, with slower growth rate of tunnel number. However, edge–vertex scaling and degree distribution of the tunnel network were similar across all treatments. In all cases, the amount of excavated material was correlated with the number of active workers. Our study reveals that morphological features of excavated tunnels show modest variation when constructed by workers of varying sizes, but topological features associated with the tunnel network are conserved. These results suggest that important behavioural aspects of tunnel construction—and thus nest building—are similar among morphologically distinct members of fire ant societies.  相似文献

Understanding the process of domestic retrofit is important for learning and innovation. This is particularly the case for low carbon retrofits such as those undertaken under the UK's Retrofit for the Future (RftF) programme, with its aim to achieve an overall 80% carbon reduction by 2050. Current post-occupancy evaluation (POE) research has both theoretical and methodological limitations with implications for technical and behavioural research in the built environment. Drawing on relevant ideas and concepts from social practice theory and science and technology studies, principally prefiguration (constraints/enablement), black-boxing, heating and cooling practices, this paper demonstrates how the relationship between buildings and people could be reconceptualized as mutually constitutive and co-evolving through a process of ‘interactive adaptation’. The concept of ‘interactive adaptation’ is explored through a novel approach to integrating physical and social data collected from a sample of dwellings selected from the RftF programme. Analysis yields insights into the influences and pathways of interactive adaptation resulting from retrofit technology and practices. The implications of these insights for policy-makers, the research community and practitioners are discussed: end-use energy demand policy needs to be informed by a socio-technical approach.  相似文献

In this paper, an adaptive neural output‐feedback control approach is considered for a class of uncertain multi‐input and multi‐output (MIMO) stochastic nonlinear systems with unknown control directions. Neural networks (NNs) are applied to approximate unknown nonlinearities, and K‐filter observer is designed to estimate unavailable system's states. Due to utilization of Nussbaum gain function technique in the proposed approach, the singularity problem and requirement to prior knowledge about signs of high‐frequency gains are removed, simultaneously. Razumikhin functional method is employed to deal with unknown state time‐varying delays, so that the offered control approach is free of common assumptions on derivative of time‐varying delays. Also, an adaptive neural dynamic surface control is developed; hence, explosion of complexity in conventional backstepping method is eliminated, effectively. The boundedness of all the resulting closed‐loop signals is guaranteed in probability; meanwhile, convergence of the tracking errors to adjustable compact set in the sense of mean quartic value is also proved. Most preset response surface methodology (RSM) designs offer ease of implementation and good performance over a wide range of process and design optimization applications. These designs often lack the ability to adapt the design on the basis of the characteristics of application and experimental space so as to reduce the number of experiments necessary. Hence, they are not cost‐effective for applications where the cost of experimentation is high or when the experimentation resources are limited. In this paper, we present an adaptive sequential response surface methodology (ASRSM) for industrial experiments with high experimentation cost, limited experimental resources, and high design optimization performance requirement. The proposed approach is a sequential adaptive experimentation approach that combines concepts from nonlinear optimization, design of experiments, and response surface optimization. The ASRSM uses the information gained from the previous experiments to design the subsequent experiment by simultaneously reducing the region of interest and identifying factor combinations for new experiments. Its major advantage is the experimentation efficiency such that for a given response target, it identifies the input factor combination (or containing region) in less number of experiments than the classical single‐shot RSM designs. Through extensive simulated experiments and real‐world case studies, we show that the proposed ASRSM method outperforms the popular central composite design method and compares favorably with optimal designs. This paper presents an adaptive harmonic steady‐state (AHSS) controller that addresses the problem of rejecting sinusoids with known frequencies that act on a completely unknown asymptotically stable linear time‐invariant system. We analyze the stability and closed‐loop performance of AHSS for multi‐input multi‐output systems that are square (ie, the number of controls equals the number of performance measurements). In this case, we show that AHSS asymptotically rejects disturbances, that is, the performance measurement tends to 0. We also present a numerical study of the steady‐state and transient performance of AHSS for square and nonsquare systems.  相似文献

This paper studies the problem of steering a nonholonomic vehicle with a constant forward velocity to localize a source in 3‐D. Of two existing 3‐D source‐seeking strategies, one causes overshoots of the vehicle around the source while the other shows slow convergence rate in approaching the source. We propose a composite of these 2 control strategies to achieve a balanced performance by taking advantage of both strategies. Moreover, we prove local exponential stability for a static spherical signal map using averaging and describe the influence of the parameters using root locus method. Simulation results further validate the effectiveness and advantages of the combined strategy.  相似文献

A comprehensive proteome map of T-lymphoblastic leukemia cells and its alterations after daunorubicin, doxorubicin and mitoxantrone treatments was monitored and evaluated either by paired comparison with relevant untreated control and using multivariate classification of treated and untreated samples. With the main focus on early time intervals when the influence of apoptosis is minimized, we found significantly different levels of proteins, which corresponded to 1%–2% of the total amount of protein spots detected. According to Gene Ontology classification of biological processes, the highest representation of identified proteins for all three drugs belong to metabolic processes of proteins and nucleic acids and cellular processes, mainly cytoskeleton organisation and ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. Importantly, we observed significant proportion of changes in proteins involved in the generation of precursor metabolites and energy typical for daunorubicin, transport proteins participating in response to doxorubicin and a group of proteins of immune system characterising response to mitoxantrone. Both a paired comparison and the multivariate evaluation of quantitative data revealed daunorubicin as a distinct member of the group of anthracycline/anthracenedione drugs. A combination of identified drug specific protein changes, which may help to explain anti-cancer activity, together with the benefit of blocking activation of adaptive cancer pathways, presents important approaches to improving treatment outcomes in cancer.  相似文献

In recent years, the conservation of industrial heritage in China has gained increasing attention within the broader context of urban conservation practices. For both policy-makers and scholars, accommodating this industrial heritage will emerge as a pertinent issue for consideration as a growing number of industrial architectural legacies dating from the Republican and Maoist eras come under (re)development pressures. This paper thus traces the development of industrial heritage conservation practices in China and discusses several dilemmas intrinsic to this type of conservation, including issues of authenticity, representativeness, and distinction. Based on comparative case studies from China and other international precedents, this paper also seeks to illustrate the different approaches that could be pursued while still attaining a balance between competing interests and claims.  相似文献

针对约束优化问题,提出一种自适应人工蜂群算法。算法采用反学习初始化方法使初始种群均匀分布于搜索空间。为了平衡搜索过程中可行个体和不可行个体的数量,算法使用自适应选择策略。在跟随蜂阶段,采用最优引导搜索方程来增强算法的开采能力。通过对13个标准测试问题进行实验并与其他算法比较,发现自适应人工蜂群算法具有较强的寻优能力和较好的稳定性。  相似文献
