The surprising role of magnetism on the phase stability of Fe (Ferro)

We discuss the phase stability of the important element Fe in terms of the contributions to stability from the various forms of magnetism that exist in Fe. We point out that the ferromagnetic Fe is not cubic and that it is reasonable to return the beta phase of Fe to the phase diagrams based on Fe to designate paramagnetic BCC form of iron. We give a working definition of a phase, which includes the term “order parameter” following the insights of Landau.

Review of Readings in General Psychology: Canadian Contributions.

This reprinted article originally appeared in Canadian Psychologist, 1971, Vol 12(1), 87-89. (The following abstract of the original article appeared in record 2007-02140-023.) Reviews the book, Readings in General Psychology: Canadian Contributions by A. W. Pressey and J. P. Zubek (1970). A collection of seventy articles, sixty-eight of which are written by Canadian psychologists and other psychologists resident at some point in Canada, comprise the content of this set of readings. Two other contributions are by distinguished Canadian physicians. The organization of the book is in fourteen parts following the traditional divisions of an introductory text in psychology. The articles are from a variety of places but predominantly from the Canadian Journal of Psychology. Others are from such prestigious sources as Science and Nature. Editorial.

In this editorial, the editor notes that with volume 63, his 6-year term as editor of the Journal of Abnormal and Social Psychology ends, and the editorial reins will be passed to Daniel Katz. He reports in this valedictory editorial some facts and impressions about the journal's recent past, and records his indebtedness to the many people who have contributed to bringing the journal out. It is added that such a report is in order, since the editor is responsible for a "public utility," not a "private enterprise"; he holds a stewardship on behalf of the members of the American Psychological Association, of the journal's authors and readers, and less tangibly but most important, on behalf of its sector of psychological science. Overall though, the editor concludes that the pressures, the frustrations, and gratifications of the editorial role predictably leave him ambivalent as he turns over the direction of the journal to the new editor. But there is no ambivalence in his attachment to the venerable journal, and it is therefore very satisfying to know that the new Editor is so admirably qualified to guide it toward a distinguished contribution to psychology in the coming years. Obituary: Alvin M. Liberman (1917-2000).

Memorializes Alvin M. Liberman, known for his work in the field of speech perception. He was a pioneer in the experimental study of speech, and he contributed a widely cited motor theory of speech perception. His early research on the failure to accurately perceive words presented in acoustic alphabets led to the discovery that speech is not composed of discrete, segment-sized units, and the acoustic structure for consonants and vowels is highly context sensitive. From this finding, he developed the motor theory of speech perception, in which perception of speech is a component of the human biological adaptation of language use. His sustained interest in this field of research expanded to include theories of reading difficulties and the discovery that children who are failing to learn to read on schedule characteristically lack phoneme awareness. Planning Gains,Providing Homes

Planning gain has long been used in Britain for infrastructure funding and has been increasingly used to secure land and funding from private developers for new affordable homes. This paper examines the theoretical and policy underpinnings of planning gain. It describes the growth in the number of new affordable, including intermediate, homes delivered through planning gain, the variations between planning authorities in the incidence of planning gain and the value of the contributions developers make. In the light of the environment after the credit crunch it considers the extent to which planning gain mechanisms can any longer deliver new affordable homes.     

Density and phase equilibrium for ice and structure I hydrates using the Gibbs–Helmholtz constrained equation of state

A new, rigorous framework centered around the multi-scale GHC equation of state is presented for predicting bulk density and phase equilibrium for light gas–water mixtures at conditions where hexagonal ice and structure I hydrate phases can exist. The novel aspects of this new framework include (1) the use of internal energies of departure for ice and empty hydrate respectively to determine densities, (2) contributions to the standard state fugacity of water in ice and empty hydrate from lattice structure, (3) computation of these structural contributions to standard state fugacity from compressibility factors and EOS parameters alone, and (4) the direct calculation of gas occupancy from phase equilibrium. Numerical results for densities and equilibrium for systems involving ice and/or gas hydrates predicted by this GHC-based framework are compared to predictions of other equations of state, density correlations, and experimental data where available. Results show that this new GHC-based EOS framework accurately predicts the densities of hexagonal water ice and structure I gas hydrates as well as phase equilibrium for methane–water and CO₂–water mixtures.
