The once and future Hebb synapse.

Suggests that the Hebb synapse has become better known than D. Hebb himself. In this respect he has joined an exclusive club along with the Ising model in condensed matter physics and Parkinson's disease in medicine. This is not to say that Hebb has not made other important contributions, as P. Milner (see record 2003-01537-001) and B. Kolb (see record 2003-01537-003) document, but the Hebb synapse has eclipsed these other achievements. The goal of this essay is to examine how this happened. The Hebb synapse remains a vital organizing concept for both experimental studies and theoretical analysis, as G. Hinton emphasizes (see record 2003-01537-002). Letter to The Editor: Canadian Psychologist.

Comments on (1) Anonymous Review of "Readings in General Psychology: Canadian Contributions" by A. W. Pressey and J. P. Zubek (see record 2007-02140-023) and (2) Editorial Policy with Respect to Publishing of Unsigned Book Reviews in the Canadian Psychologist. In the January 1971 issue of the Canadian Psychologist (pages (87-89) there appeared an unsigned review of my co-edited book entitled "Readings in General Psychology: Canadian Contributions". May I state, at the outset, that I was most disturbed by its overall nature which was characterized not only by unwarranted ridicule, some obvious biases, and several gross misinterpretations but also by an almost complete failure to understand the purpose and scope of this book. Even more serious is the reviewer's suggestion or implication that the use of this book might conceivably have a detrimental effect on our beginning university students by providing them with a superficial or even a distorted impression of the nature of "Canadian psychology". Largely because of this allegation, I feel compelled to reply to the review. Furthermore, I also feel compelled to raise a somewhat related issue, viz., the nature of the editorial policy of the Canadian Psychologist regarding book reviews, particularly the publishing of unsigned reviews. Contributions to the heat capacity of alpha (HCP) titanium from 200–1000 K

The heat capacity at constant pressure C _p of alpha (HCP) titanium from 200 to 1000 K has been analyzed for contributions from lattice vibrations and electron excitations. Experimental data in the literature have been used to obtain the heat capacity at constant volume C _V by the dilation correction. From C _V has been subtracted an harmonic lattice contribution C _VH given by the Debye heat capacity using a single Debye temperature and an electronic contribution C _VE . The difference C _V –(C _VH +C _VE ) is positive, and from about 600 to 1000 K it is real in the sense that it is larger than the experimental uncertainty in C _V . This difference is attributed to an anharmonic lattice vibration contribution C _VA . Two models for C _VE have been used. One, which includes electron-phonon enhancement, leads to a C _VA of about 15% of C _V at 1000 K. The other takes into account the shift in the density of states with temperature and leads to a C _VA of about 5% of C _V      

Lifecycle impacts of natural gas to hydrogen pathways on urban air quality

In this paper we examine the potential air quality impacts of hydrogen transportation fuel from a lifecycle analysis perspective, including impacts from fuel production, delivery, and vehicle use. We assume that hydrogen fuel cell vehicles are introduced in a specific region, Sacramento County, California. We consider two levels of market penetration where 9% or 20% of the light duty fleet are hydrogen fuel cell vehicles. The following three natural gas to hydrogen supply pathways are assessed in detail and compared in terms of emissions and the resulting changes in ambient air quality: (1) onsite hydrogen production; (2) centralized hydrogen production with gaseous hydrogen pipeline delivery systems; and (3) centralized hydrogen production with liquid hydrogen truck delivery systems. All the pathways examined use steam methane reforming (SMR) of natural gas to produce hydrogen. The source contributions to incremental air pollution are estimated and compared among hydrogen pathways. All of the hydrogen pathways result in extremely low contributions to ambient air concentrations of _NOx${\mathrm{NO}}_x$, CO, particulates, and _SOx${\mathrm{SO}}_x$, typically less than 0.1% of the current ambient pollution for both levels of market penetration. Among the hydrogen supply options, it is found that the central SMR with pipeline delivery systems is the lowest pollution option available provided the plant is located to avoid transport of pollutants into the city via prevailing winds. The onsite hydrogen pathway is comparable to the central hydrogen pathway with pipeline systems in terms of the resulting air pollution. The pathway with liquid hydrogen trucks has a greater impact on air quality relative to the other pathways due to emissions associated with diesel trucks and electricity consumption to liquefy hydrogen. However, all three hydrogen pathways result in negligible air pollution in the region.
