Physical and thermo-mechanical properties of whey protein isolate films containing antimicrobials, and their effect against spoilage flora of fresh beef

The effectiveness of antimicrobial films against beef's spoilage flora during storage at 5 °C and the impact of the antimicrobial agents on the mechanical and physical properties of the films were examined. Antimicrobial films were prepared by incorporating different levels of sodium lactate (NaL) and entities/25b.gif" alt="var epsilon" title="var epsilon" border="0">-polylysine (entities/25b.gif" alt="var epsilon" title="var epsilon" border="0">-PL) into sorbitol-plasticized whey protein isolate (WPI) films. The moisture uptake behavior and the water vapor permeability (WVP) were affected only by the addition of NaL at all concentrations used since an increased water uptake and permeability were observed with the addition of NaL into the protein matrix. An increase of the glass transition temperature (5–15 °C) of the sorbitol region, as determined by Dynamic Mechanical Thermal Analysis (DMTA), was caused by the addition of entities/25b.gif" alt="var epsilon" title="var epsilon" border="0">-PL into the WPI specimens. Instead, incorporation of NaL into the protein matrix did not alter its thermo-mechanical behavior. The addition of NaL at concentrations of 1.0% and 1.5% w/w in the film-forming solution resulted in a decline of maximum tensile strength (σ_max) and Young modulus (E). A decrease of E and σ_max, accompanied with an increase in elongation at break (%EB), was also observed with increasing entities/25b.gif" alt="var epsilon" title="var epsilon" border="0">-PL concentration, at moisture contents higher that 10% (w/w). The antimicrobial activity of the composite WPI films was tested on fresh beef cut portions. The maximum specific growth rate (μ_max) of total flora (total viable count, TVC) was significantly reduced with the use of antimicrobial films made from 0.75% w/w entities/25b.gif" alt="var epsilon" title="var epsilon" border="0">-PL in film-forming solutions (p < 0.05), while the growth of Lactic Acid Bacteria was completely inhibited. Significant inhibition of growth of the total flora and pseudomonads was also observed with the use of films made with protein solutions containing 2.0% w/w NaL. These results pointed to the effectiveness of the antimicrobial whey protein films to extend the shelf life of fresh beef.     

Total phenolic contents and antioxidant properties of commonly consumed vegetables grown in Colorado

A total of 38 commonly consumed vegetable samples, including 3 kale, 1 rhubarb, 3 spinach, 3 broccoli, 2 green bean, 5 carrot, 10 tomato, and 11 potato samples, were investigated for their total phenolic contents (TPC) and antioxidant properties. The measured antioxidant properties included free radical scavenging activities against DPPH^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">}, superoxide anion radical (O₂^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">−}), ABTS^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">+} and peroxyl radical, and Fe²⁺ chelating capacity. The tested vegetables differed in their antioxidant properties and TPC, although all vegetables had significant antioxidant activities and contained significant levels of phenolics. The TPC and the measured antioxidant properties were correlated to each other. The Fe⁺² chelating capacity and the scavenging capacities against ABTS^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">+}, DPPH^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">} and O₂^{entities/rad" class="glyphImg">−} were reported for these commonly consumed vegetables for the first time. Results from this study suggest that kale, spinach, broccoli, and rhubarb are the better dietary sources of natural antioxidant activities and phenolic compounds. Furthermore, kale, broccoli and spinach produced in Colorado may have greater antioxidant contents than those grown at other locations.     

Effects of sodium promoter on the mechanism of biphenol hydrogenation over Pd/C catalyst

The effect of sodium promoter on the catalytic hydrogenation of biphenol (BP) was investigated. Several reaction products were identified and the change in their distribution with time was analyzed to find the reaction mechanism. Different amount of sodium salt was impregnated on Pd/C to observe its effect on the composing reactions of BP hydrogenation. The existence of sodium metal decreased the Centities/dbnd" alt="double bond; length as m-dash" title="double bond; length as m-dash" border="0">C bond hydrogenation, but accelerated the Centities/dbnd" alt="double bond; length as m-dash" title="double bond; length as m-dash" border="0">O bond hydrogenation resulting in the increase of the yield to bicyclohexyl-4,4′-diol (BHD). The promotional effect of Na on the supported palladium on carbon catalysts were explained by electronic and geometric factors.     

Two objections to materialism.

This paper has two objects: (1) to show that mental entities (perceptions) cannot possibly be identical with physical entities; and (2) to show that, because mental entities are not identical with physical entities, mental entities do not interact with, and are therefore not the product of, physical entities. Because point 2 follows readily from point 1, most of this paper will be spent arguing for 1. Also set forth are two reasons to hold that mental entities are not identical with physical entities. 关于统一社会信用代码立法问题的若干思考

2015年6月11日,国务院正式发布了《法人和其他组织统一社会信用代码制度建设总体方案》(国发[2015]33号).为全面落实33号文的规定,相关部门正启动相关立法工作.本文从组织机构代码管理部门的角度,对《组织机构代码管理办法》修订中的相关问题提出若干思考,以抛砖引玉,助力实现组织机构代码向统一代码的平稳过渡.

本文针对《法人和其他组织统一社会信用代码编码规则》(GB32100-2015)国家强制性标准中编码规则进行解读,对第18位校验位算法提出使用SQL语句实现校验位算法的方法.     

Estimation comparison on busy period for a controllable M/G/1 system with bicriterion policy

We propose an estimator for the expected busy period (denoted by β) of a controllable M/G/1 queueing system in which the server applies a bicriterion 〈p, N〉 policy during his idle period. Using this estimator, we construct new confidence intervals for β, which are based on five bootstrap methods; standard bootstrap (SB), percentile bootstrap (PB), bootstrap pivotal (BP), bias-corrected percentile bootstrap (BCPB), bias-corrected and accelerated bootstrap (BCa). A numerical simulation study is conducted in order to demonstrate performance of the proposed estimator $\hat{\beta }$ and bootstrap confidence intervals for β. From the simulation results, we show that $\hat{\beta }$ is a consistent estimator for β, which agrees with the theoretical results. In addition, we also investigate the accuracy of the five bootstrap confidence intervals by calculating the coverage percentage and the relative coverage (defined as the ratio of coverage percentage to average length of confidence interval). Detailed discussions of simulation results for three queueing models are presented.
