Quadratic optimization fine tuning for the Support Vector Machines learning phase

This work presents a comparative analysis of specific, rather than general, mathematical programming implementation techniques of the quadratic optimization problem (QP) based on Support Vector Machines (SVM) learning process. Considering the Karush–Kuhn–Tucker (KKT) optimality conditions, we present a strategy of implementation of the SVM-QP following three classical approaches: (i) active set, also divided in primal and dual spaces, methods, (ii) interior point methods and (iii) linearization strategies. We also present the general extension to treat large-scale applications consisting in a general decomposition of the QP problem into smaller ones, conserving the exact solution approach. In the same manner, we propose a set of heuristics to take into account for a better than a random selection process for the initialization of the decomposition strategy. We compare the performances of the optimization strategies using some well-known benchmark databases.

Process conditions affect pigment quality and yield in extracts of purple sunflower hulls

Extract of purple sunflower hulls is a potential red food colorant; however, suitable process conditions must still be identified. Selected process variables were studied using bench-scale units to prepare, clarify, concentrate and spray dry extracts. Concentration by evaporation at 32°C and addition of maltodextrin to 15% (wt/dry wt) prior to drying largely eliminated pigment degradation during those steps. Relative to water extracts, extracts prepared with 5 to 15% ethanol in water generally yielded more pigment with similar levels of degradation and loss during subsequent processing. Use of 5% ethanol/2% citric acid reduced yield by about half relative to water, but gave a powder with a lower degradation index and wetting time. Percentage recovery of pigment during concentration and drying was not greatly affected by solvent type or extraction temperature.

Discourse cues to deception in the case of multiple receivers

Behavioral cues to deception are instrumental in detecting deception. As one of the primary sources of deception behavior, text has been analyzed at the level of sub-sentence or message but not the discourse of interaction. Additionally, empirical studies on cues to deception in the case of multiple receivers remain nonexistent. To fill these voids, we propose a discourse framework and six hypotheses about deception behaviors in a multi-receiver environment. The deception behaviors are operationalized by discourse features based on an analysis of real-world data. The results of statistical analysis validate the efficacy of discourse features in discriminating deceivers from truth-tellers.
